Leadership isn’t trusting your players to rise to the occasion, it’s knowing what they’re capable of and putting them in the best situation to succeed.

Great quote from the article, and what I believe was one of Baker's major deficiencies as a manger. He didn't put his players in positions to succeed with their particular skill sets.

I think it must be noted that Dusty has not been to hired manage again (yet).

I thought Dusty was pretty successful in his stint in Cincinnati. He wasn't perfect but neither were his teams.

Only Reds fans complain about managers that reach the playoffs after a decade of losing.

Though was it Dusty that got them there or wave of young talent reaching the big leagues combined with an organizational make over that did it?

The Reds of this decade have struck me as very talented underachievers. Some of that I think is Dusty's mark, considering that's kind of been his MO his whole career.
They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

The article represents the classic old school vs. new school way of viewing the game.

Is it about run differential or about winning games?

Baker played Cozart and all his players according to how he thought the could best help the team win games. Cozart is an excellent bunter/sacrificer, and Baker thought that was a valuable skill in the two slot in the batting order that helps the team win games. Baker was less concerned with scoring the most runs, and more concerned with doing what he thought was necessary to win games.

Agreed. And what is wrong with wanting and demanding more than simply reaching the playoffs? I know everyone here thoroughly enjoyed playing the "play in game" in Pittsburg last year. Sigh. It amazes me where some fans set their bar of expectations.

I think most Reds fans are thrilled with managers that reach the playoffs. I think they're frustrated with managers that stall repeatedly once they get there.

There's a difference between being happy and being satisfied. I'm happy when I have a PB&J sandwich. I'm not satisfied with it. I would have rather had Skyline or a steak. But I'm grateful that I had something to eat.

The author might have a point, but there's really nothing in this piece that proves it whatsoever. I need to see situational splits, replacements, etc.

Otherwise it should be tossed onto the Dusty Witch Hunt Scrap Heap.

As much as the daily lineups are criticized and some rightfully so the managers job is to win as many games over a long season as possible. So it should be noted that the 3 best hitters on the team were Votto Choo and Bruce. The players with most PA were Votto Choo and Bruce.
