    Nope. just don't get it.
Headley is 4th among all 3Bs in defensive value since 2010. That decent OBP would rank 2nd on our team, and his power is really kind of a question mark (though I'd think it would play well in GABP on a regular basis).

It would also allow us to move Frazier, who is a better bat than Ludwick or Heisey at this point IMO, to left field.

But as mentioned I didn't really think it through in terms of his contract.

I'd love to have him, but mostly because he was a t-ball teammate of mine. He had a couple nice appearances in Arizona.

10:00am: The Braves have issued a press release to announce the signing of right fielder Jason Heyward to a two-year contract. The contract, which covers the 2014-15 seasons, prevents Heyward and the Braves from going to an arbitration hearing. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the Braves.

This new contract buys out his final two years of arbitration eligibility, meaning he's on track to become a free agent heading into his age-26 season. Cases such as that are so rare in today's world of extensions, that Heyward is poised to be one of the most coveted free agents in recent history should he stay healthy and not sign a further extension.

10:08am: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that Heyward's deal will pay him $13.3MM over the next two seasons.

10:34am: David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (via Twitter) that Heyward's deal also contains performance escalators that could boost the value of his contract's second year.

Meanwhile, Wren tells MLB.com's Mark Bowman that the club still has a strict "file and trial" policy, but it doesn't apply to multi-year deals (Twitter link). In other words, they won't continue to negotiate one-year deals with Freeman or Kimbrel from this point forward, but extensions could still be reached. That approach is typical of many file and trial clubs.

11:35am: Heyman tweets the financial breakdown of the contract: Heyward receives a $1MM signing bonus, a $4.5MM salary in 2014 and a $7.8MM salary in 2015.

Though rumors connecting the two sides have dissipated a bit recently, the Dodgers remain in "active talks" with right-hander Bronson Arroyo, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link).

Certainly, some could make the case that Arroyo is a luxury for the Dodgers rather than a need. The team already boasts a rotation consisting of Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-jun Ryu and Dan Haren, with Josh Beckett and Stephen Fife as candidates for the fifth slot (Chad Billingsley, too, will be an option in the summer once his rehab from Tommy John surgery is complete). Nevertheless, the Dodgers have perhaps more financial flexibility than any team in the league and could decide that Arroyo is the final necessary piece to a World Series push.

The Braves are close to announcing an extension for Freddie Freeman, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Freeman, like teammate Jason Heyward (who reached a two-year contract agreement earlier today), is represented by Excel Sports Management.

12:37pm: Freeman's extension will be "huge," reports Morosi (on Twitter). One source tells Morosi that the deal is in the $100MM range, clearly indicating the Braves have secured multiple free agent years with this new contract.

Yulieski Gourriel is trying to get some sort of government approval to come play in the USA. This guy was a stud, he was the best player in Cuba. I remember him as having a lightning quick bat, in the Vlad Guerrero/Gary Sheffield vein. He plays 3B. One can dream about him sitting 4th in the batting order.

The Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Orioles are the three finalists to land free agent starter Bronson Arroyo, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). Among those clubs, the Diamondbacks are "slight favorites" to lock up the soon-to-be 37-year-old.

The Marlins will sign right-hander Chaz Roe, reports MLBTR's Tim Dierkes (on Twitter). Roe, 27, cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Rangers last week. The Sosnick/Cobbe client rejected an outright assignment from the club and elected free agency yesterday. He was said to be deciding between two clubs last night after six teams had shown interest in signing him.

The Braves haven't been known as a team that's big on working out long-term extensions for arbitration eligible and pre-arb players, but that reputation may be changing. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (via Twitter) that after this week's colossal eight-year, $135MM Freddie Freeman extension and a two-year, $13.3MM deal for Jason Heyward, the Braves are interested in working out extensions for shortstop Andrelton Simmons and right-hander Julio Teheran.

This Spring should be an interesting time for extensions, as it could give us a glimpse into the future market for such contracts. New television deals have infused the game with more money than ever, which could render historical context -- even from two years ago -- largely irrelevant. Players such as Simmons, Teheran, Jason Kipnis and Wil Myers (just to name a few examples) could redefine the market for pre-arb extensions in the next 12 to 14 months.

IMHO, I think the Reds are going to end up regretting not extending Bruce when he asked for it. Salaries are exploding again.

They have Bruce wrapped up through 2017. What to do with Latos/Bailey/Cueto should be their focus now. 2018 is a long way away.

The complete other side of that coin though, is that an extension like Bruce's agent approached the Reds about, would guarantee 2017-2023 or so, and would not interfere with the contract years of 2014-2017 of one of the pitchers.

Holding off on Bruce only risks the Reds not being able to afford him beyond his current contract. Which, I get would be the plan for some fans. The extension he asked about was later set by Longoria a few weeks later. Now the market keeps rising with each new deal, and while Bruce has indicated a willingness to take a discount to stay in Cincinnati, his market is still set by his peers.

The difference in 6/90-100, and 6/120+, is likely significant no matter the Reds next TV contract.

The team may be hoping that Hamilton pans out in CF, and can be flanked by Ervin/Winker/Yorman by 2016 though. That would explain their desire to postpone an extension.

Otherwise, putting off Bruce for fear of not being able to have one of the pitchers doesn't make sense, as the last couple of years of a deal for one the pitchers would be all that overlapped with an extension to Bruce, and that could be handled with deferrals or backloading.

One potential hangup in the Stephen Drew market could be the fact that Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz will be cleared to sign in two weeks. The 23-year-old was declared ineligible to sign after falsifying his age last year (Diaz claimed to be 23 then, in order to be eligible for MLB one year early). Morosi reminds that MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez listed (MLBTR link) the Red Sox and Yankees as two of eight clubs to have shown interest in Diaz back in December, and both have been linked to Drew.
