Orioles cut minor league campers Jack Cust and Matt LaPorta

SARASOTA, Fla. – The Orioles released designated hitter/first baseman Jack Cust and first baseman Matt LaPorta, a pair of former major leaguers who were attempting to get back to the big leagues through the organization’s minor league camp.

There were five other minor league camp cuts on Friday: first baseman/outfielder Nicholas Balog, right-hander Casey Upperman, right-hander Zach Staniewicz, right-hander Harry Marino and left-hander Harry Marino.

With the amount of organizational depth the Orioles have built, there was no space for Cust and LaPorta at the Triple-A level with a looming roster crunch, so they cut ties with both so they could possibly latch on elsewhere.

The club had an organizational staff meeting on Thursday to discuss the major league roster and in recent days the major league and Triple-A Norfolk staff has met to project the club’s Triple-A roster.

Cust, who didn’t play in 2013 after being cut by the Rays last spring, had a tryout during the team’s minicamp in January and signed to a minor league deal. He hadn’t played in a major league game since July 27, 2011.

LaPorta, a former first-round pick in 2007, hadn’t played in the majors since 2012 and spent the majority of last season with the Indians’ Triple-A club. He signed a minor league deal with the Orioles in early February.

With Aroldis Chapman out and with Jonathan Broxton and Sean Marshall returning from injury, the Reds have at least a temporary vacancy at closer. One trade option to fill it could be the Diamondbacks' J.J. Putz, who has closing experience and who worked with current Reds manager Bryan Price when both were with the Mariners.

Minor Moves: Kameron Loe, Jeff Francoeur

By Charlie Wilmoth [March 22 at 12:09pm CST]

Here are today's minor moves from around the league.

Pitcher Kameron Loe has opted out of his minor-league deal with the Giants, and he's now a free agent, MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo tweets. Loe pitched for the Mariners, Cubs and Braves in 2013, accumulating 20 innings with a 5.85 ERA, 5.4 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9.

The Indians have released outfielder Jeff Francoeur, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian tweets. They had signed him to a minor-league deal in January. Francoeur, 30, collected 256 plate appearances with the Royals and Giants in 2013, hitting .204/.238/.298. Francoeur has also played with the Braves, Mets and Rangers in his nine-year big-league career.

Juan Francisco, Brewers Likely To Part Ways

By Charlie Wilmoth [March 22 at 7:16pm CST]

There hasn't yet been an official announcement, but the Brewers appear to be in the process of parting ways with first baseman Juan Francisco. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak reports (via Twitter) that Francisco's locker has been cleared out, a possible sign that the Brewers have designated Francisco for assignment. The move likely means the Brewers will have veterans Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay play first base.

Francisco was set to make $1.35MM in his first year of arbitration eligibility as a Super Two. He hit .227/.296/.422 in 385 plate appearances with the Brewers last season, not an especially impressive line, given that he is not a strong defensive player.

IMO there's no way. JF is now more of a first baseman DH. Hopefully for him he'll wind up in the AL as a platoon DH.

Dodgers, Mattingly, aren't happy with Puig.

I'm guessing when Kemp, comes back, Puig will be shopped. But it's just a guess.

If it were up to Mattingly, there's no doubt Puig would be shopped around. The higher ups aren't going to do it, however.

Other names hitting the waiver wire or free agency today:

Ramon Hernandez, Yorvit Torrealba (If Mes is hurt more than we think)
Jose Mijares (Another lefty would be a good idea IMO)
Kevin Fransden (Better idea than Nelson unless Nelson can play SS)
Carlos Pena, Chad Tracy, Tony Abreu (no real reason to be interested)
Kyle Farnsworth (given the state of the pen, but I'd pass)

Having better players makes "the right time" or "the big hit" happen a lot more often. PLUS PLUS

I'd definitely take a flier on Mijares.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

    Jurickson Profar Out 8-12 Weeks

By Charlie Wilmoth [March 23 at 5:23pm CST]

The Rangers have announced that infielder Jurickson Profar will miss 8-12 weeks with a muscle tear, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. The Rangers would prefer to look internally for a replacement, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Rangers' big offseason trade of Ian Kinsler for Prince Fielder and cash was based on the idea that Profar, once one of baseball's best prospects, would take over at second base. Now, though, the Rangers will need to turn to a backup plan. The Rangers do have an excellent second base prospect in Rougned Odor, but he just turned 20 and has played only 30 games above the Class A+ level.

    From the article:

Yasiel Puig struck out in the ninth inning of Sunday's 7-5 win and then did not return to right field in the bottom half of the inning. Before the game, Mattingly told reporters that Puig "grabs something every time he takes a swing and misses."

Asked what injury caused Puig to leave Sunday's game, Mattingly said, "I guess his back." He then seemed to react sarcastically when asked about the severity of the injury.

"Shoulder yesterday, back today, so I'm not sure if they're going to get him tests or get him to the MRI Monday or a bone scan on Tuesday, maybe," Mattingly said. "I'm not quite sure what we'll do. We may not do anything. I'm not sure."

Puig, who batted .122 in spring training, busted out of his slump by going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs Sunday, but he also made decisions that turned into two ridiculous outs on the bases. Puig dashed for second on his RBI single in the third inning. Dee Gordon was held at third base, and Puig was thrown out easily. When a ball trickled away from catcher Miguel Montero in the sixth, Puig broke for third and was out by 10 feet.

"It was a rough day," Mattingly said.
"They didn't like it in Pittsburgh."
