Sometimes the best way to express you disagree with an opinion is to keep it short and sweet. I can't say I use the term much, if ever, but it's definitely a surefire way of k.i.s.s.

I only use "meh" in clearly tongue-in-cheek instances, but when it's used as described in the initial post, remember what the word is meant to express: a degree of indifference/antipathy. In response to a "long, carefully-worded and argued post," to my viewing it's usually an oblique commentary that translates to "you are taking this way too seriously." They don't agree but they don't care enough to accept the debate gauntlet thrown down. It's not exactly the most graceful way to step out of the discussion, though.

Agreed and very well worded analysis of "meh." I guess I've just never been a fan of the whole "you are taking this way too seriously" move, since it refuses to engage with what the poster took time to articulate. Then again, I'm certainly no stranger to taking things too seriously. So there's that.

". . . acquiring J. Blanton from Oakland for, apparently, Bailey/Cueto, Votto and a lesser prospect. I do it in a second . . . The Reds' equation this year is simple: Make Matt Belisle your #3 starter . . . trade for Blanton, win 85 or more, be in the mix all summer." - Paul Daugherty, Feb. 8, 2008

I can't stand meh. It always seems short and rude especially in response to a statement that actually has real thought put into it, even if the mehing party is in disagreement with the statement.

    My personal favorite?

Bah! I use it in real life too, with a dismissive hand gesture to add to the indignity.

Red eye would totally hate me.

    Totally.

Actually, some of these things are easier to take in person since you can also read the other person's facial expressions, which convey more nuance.

Somehow, though, I think you are joking...

Actually, I've been thinking about resurrecting some Old English expressions lately. You know, I think throwing in a "Fie!" or a "Alas!" once in awhile can be really effective for sports message boards.

I'll also go on record in saying that I am not the least bit offended -- and usually even quite amused -- by the Homer Simpson-inspired expression "doh!" which I find to be great shorthand for self deprecation.

I gotta be honest: Are we really arguing about this?
