Can't hurt. A lefty swinger to platoon with Ludwick is high on my wish list. If he's not playing every day you can keep him healthy. This is a Beane type move that if it works you look like a genius and if it doesn't you didn't pay him anything so no harm done. You could get some decent production from two guys in that spot. Plus, there's the chance that the year off to heal up could get you lightning in a bottle, like Davis in '96.

if this fails we might as well kick Scott Podsednik 's tires -- he wants to come back too.

Hard to feel good about him playing 50+ games effectively with this rundown of surgeries....Could he play passable CF defense with so many knee surgeries? I assume he'd be at best a platoon in LF with Ludwick.

Sizemore, 31, has not played since 2011 due to continued injury problems. He has had seven surgeries since 2009: left elbow (2009), sports hernia (2009), left knee (2010), another sports hernia (2011), right knee (2011), lower back (2012) and another on the right knee (2012). It's a long list.

Except Podsednik wasn't any good when he was good.

I think this is a fine move as long as the goal is to replace Xavier Paul and not to get Sizemore of his hey-day. If he becomes more than that (think Eric Davis 1996) it's great, but I wouldn't build the roster around it.

No, Jimbo used to go after "5-tool" guys that never were.
Sabermetrics can be boiled down to this simple truism: A batter's goal is to extend the inning. Extend enough innings and you're going to score runs. Extend more innings than your opponent and you're going to score more runs than him.

You think he'll accept the Reds' work-study program?

Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips were 2 of the 4 players traded from Montreal to Cleveland for Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew

Grady Sizemore would injure himself kicking a soda can down the road. But I suppose that if Walt wants to keep paying guys money to sit on the bench injured, he would fit into the Reds' plans nicely.

Who'd have thought that the 29-year-old "model of fitness" Bartolo Colon would be an effective player 11 years later while the 20 year-old actual fitness model would fight injuries and be out of the league?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Kitty Duran would be first in line to buy a Sizemore jersey if this happened.

I imagine that the actual practice of GMing includes an axiom of "a good GM is not dismissive and is always looking for reclamation and bounceback projects who will become candidates for this season's 'comeback player of the year' award."
