Kapler: Rose Should Not Be In Hall Of Fame

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/k...of-fame-010614

Pete Rose inspired my style of play, but should not be in the Hall of Fame.

I idolized Rose. He was not just the guy with the mountainous pile of hits; he transcended the sport of baseball through his desperate affinity for dirt and gambling. He was a romantic -- and in many ways still is -- about baseball. Folks were able relate to Rose, an imperfect character who maximized his natural gifts through all-out grit.

Rose’s baseball card entitles him to a plaque in Cooperstown, NY; nobody can fairly dispute that. But he broke baseball law with full understanding that if caught, the consequences would be severe.

I still admire Rose’s style of play and what he accomplished between the lines with every iota of my soul. I also have patience and understanding for him as a human being. We all have rooms in our homes that could benefit from a good spring-cleaning.

So Rose lies where he should; in an uncomfortable bed that he hastily made - outside of the Hall.

Maybe they should do some housecleaning at the Hall, Gabe.

I posted this in another thread. I recently purchased this at cafepress.com. It is proudly in my dining room.

One guy broke a rule that he knew would get him banned from the game if he was caught. Other guys broke a rule where there was no punishment on the books at all until 2004 (I think it was 2004) and when a punishment was put in the books, it was not being banned from baseball until your third strike.

My feelings as well, Doug. They are two separate offenses. I can't feel sorry for Pete at all. He made his bed.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Pete is a Hall of Fame player. His baseball playing career tells the tale. I don't need for the pin head writers that hold the "golden key" to tell me that he is a Hall of Fame player. He is not a Hall of Fame person. Neither are a lot of the folks that the pin heads have elected over the years.

If you were making MLB as fair as possible, would you make a stronger punishment for gambling than for using PED's. Not meant as a leading question, I'm honestly curious what people have to say on this matter.

I would...pretty much every game people are trying to find a way to cheat and get away with it. Doesn't make it right, just the way it is. From what I understand, every clubhouse in MLB has a no gambling sign in it. To me Pete Rose broke baseball's heart when he was busted, then continued to lie about it. I don't really feel the same way about steroids. I mean, MLB did let it go on all those years!!!

Why? What Pete did involved baseball. It's not like he was drinking and driving and got caught. What he did involved the morality of baseball and Pete accepted his punishment.

Damn right gambling is worse than PEDs. It goes without saying. PEDs might (does) enhance performance. Enhanced performance helps your team win despite being an unfair advantage. Gambling can lead to a slippery slope where games might be thrown/compromised. $2 million in debt to the bookies? Do your best to lose this game and that game... then we will forgive your debt. Not to question or call you out (respect ya), but I am surprised when people question the "gambling rule thing" or compare gambling on your sport to anything else. There is a reason why that rule has the permanently ineligible thing attached to it. The fans expect all players/coaches/managers/GMs/owners to try to win every game.

Now if people want to question the Hall of Fame changing its rules regarding Pete Rose being eligible to get in Cooperstown after Pete's ban, then that is a different story. That is the real problem relative to Pete Rose. I do not feel sorry for him, but changing the rule AFTER Pete's ban seems unfair.
