The lack of superstar players in the late 1970's and 1980s is fascinating to me. I don't even know how to start the discussion off.

I'm disappointed that Jack Morris didn't get in.
I get it that he didn't really deserve to, much like Tony Perez likely didn't deserve to based on his numbers.
Apparently Dan LeBetard has been revealed as the writer who turned control of his ballot over to Deadspin's readers to allow the public 1 "vote".

Perhaps I should have been clearer. The lack of superstar players who entered MLB between 1976-1989 would have been more accurate.
As mentioned on MLBN today, no starting pitchers who entered the league after 1971 up until Maddux or Glavine is in the HOF (Clemens is worthy too). Is that not a head scratcher for some of you?

Pitching wise, there weren't any who started in that period. Morris is the best of the bunch. He's borderline HOF for me.
He passes my first test: one of the best at his position for a ten year period. But his overall numbers just aren't HOF caliber. That period was the first with the DH, so that may explain some of it, but it is perplexing that no starting pitcher who began his career in that period was truly elite.

Dennis Eckersley and Clemens are in there as starting in that period. It was also the era of increased BP use so many benchmarks from the prior generation were not reached.
The same thing for pitchers can be found in pitchers that played in the 1930's, not a slew of them as HOF's

Eck doesn't get in the HOF if he doesn't become a dominant closer. Clemens came in a the tail end, so just make it a nine year period and the point is still valid. Even if you count those two, that's an extremely small amount for a ten year period. What's really strange is that offense was down during those years, unlike the 1930's when runs offense was way up.

So is there any chance the thread title can be changed to reflect the actual HOF selections for posterity's sake?
