He played 2nd base. Joe Morgan had a career .819 OPS.

Sure, but his hitting percentages weren't Hall of Fame level IMO. I have no problem if Biggio gets in eventually but IMO a guy like Piazza should have been first ballot.

    Joe had an OPS+ of 132. Biggio's was 112.

Whatever, as I said, ultimately no problem with Biggio. But as an early ballot guy, the one rejection that I find annoying is Piazza.

He played more than 2nd base in his career. 428 games at catcher and 363 games in the OF.

Different eras when comparing to Little Joe.

No, he played 2nd base, CATCHER and CENTERFIELD...and played them well. Not many guys that versatile.

Oops, sorry. Didn't see that RFA1966 caught it already.

Dunno. The other 3,000 hit guy on the ballot didn't even make the 5% cut -- and he had 500 HR to boot.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Didn't that guy use some kind of male enhancement?

If he'd run a poll on his own website or started a poll on a baseball board like this and based his votes on the results, would anyone have noticed or cared?

I'd rather see voting rights stripped for people who voted in Paul Lo Duca or Armando Benitez.

This excerpt from Jeff Pearlman's book about Roger Clemens is why Piazza was neither a first-ballot HOFer nor a second-ballot HOFer.

"There was nothing more obvious than Mike on steroids," says another major league veteran who played against Piazza for years. "Everyone talked about it, everyone knew it. Guys on my team, guys on the Mets . A lot of us came up playing against Mike, so we knew what he looked like back in the day. Frankly, he sucked on the field. Just sucked. After his body changed, he was entirely different. 'Power from nowhere,' we called it."

When asked, on a scale of 1 to 10, to grade the odds that Piazza had used performance enhancers, the player doesn't pause.

    "A 12," he says. "Maybe a 13."
There are no failed drug tests or links to the BALCOs or Biogenesises of days gone by. But enough guys who covered the game back then apparently have anecdotal evidence -- of their own and from others -- to keep him out. That may change as time weeds them out and they are replaced by voters with different standards.

You mean to tell me a guy who was only drafted (1,390th player selected in that draft) b/c his father was buddies with a team's ML manager cannot turn into a Hall of Fame player without help? I am shocked!

And he'd have been first ballot if he hadn't failed a test.

You know Jeff Pearlman may have made up that entire conversation, right? He's a muckraker who never met a journalistic standard he aspired to reach.
