    Reds land a Ham Fighter

The Reds have signed pitcher Bobby Keppel to a minor-league deal, Eddy tweets. Keppel, 31, has pitched for the Royals, Rockies and Twins, but he spent the past four season with the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan. Last season, he posted a 6.14 ERA with 3.9 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9 in 36 2/3 innings there.
Well, it's something - not much - but something.

Yeah, but what was his Ham per 9 innings rate? Anything lower than 2.5 H/9, and I'd say he deserves a shot.

seriously -- how do the Reds have a spot on any bench for this guy?

He's a "salary neutral" answer to balance out the Holmberg deal - he's paying the Reds.

    More on Keppel.

A first round pick - in 2000 Keppel has never had any real success in the states. He has always hd a dismal strikeout rate and has strong flyball tendencies. This has to be pure minor league filler and probably a favor to a "baseball guy".

    Grady Sizemore's sushi chef?
The Sox traded Bullfrog the only player they've got for Shottenhoffen. Four-eyes Shottenhoffen a utility infielder. They've got a whole team of utility infielders.

Maybe Walt thought the discussion on here was getting a little stale, so he thought he'd stir things up a bit.

Is he fighting using the power of ham or fighting against the global ham conspiracy?

(Seriously though, the team nickname is the Fighters, the sponsor is Nippon Ham. A US equivalent would be the like the Minnesota Twins becoming the Hormel Spam Twins. See the fun if teams were named after corporate sponsors rather than cities?))
Burn down the disco. Hang the blessed DJ. Because the music that he constantly plays, it says nothing to me about my life.

Wikipedia (which is always accurate) says they have a half trillion in assets. That's a lot of spam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nippon_Ham

I have a not-so-crazy theory that that Walt is a friend of Keppel or his family, and he's giving him a chance as a favor. Keppel was the best amateur baseball player in the St. Louis area around 2000 when Walt was Cards GM. First round pick of the Mets, total bust, never pitched well above AA. 6 years in AAA with an ERA over 5.
How, then, are those people of the future—who are taking steroids every day—going to look back on baseball players who used steroids? They're going to look back on them as pioneers. They're going to look back at it and say "So what?" - Bill James, Cooperstown and the 'Roids

Seriously? Only the most super awesomest team nickname in all of sportsdom. Combines the manly sport of fisticuffs with tasty, tasty pork. What's not to love?

sounds as good a theory as there may be --- but that means a roster spot NOT taken by someone that might actually have a future in professional baseball (harsh as that sounds)
