I don't think Heisey will ever prove to be an everyday player but I like his bat as a PH. It is nice having a RH with pop to have as a late inning option and for some reason he has always thrived in spot starts and PH AB (or at least it has seemed that way).

I agree, but lets not pretend that the money does not ultimately come from Joe Public. The worst part is that most of it is in the form of taxes and advertising dollars. It is hard to judge the market value of a player when most of the consumer cost is hidden.

The increasing revenue stream of the owners only means that the public is bearing a larger and larger burden.

How does it mean the public is bearing a larger burden?

Advertising is a huge part of it. Ticket sales. I buy tickets. I don't have to pay more because advertisers are paying more. It is not an additional burden.

You'll pay the same ticket price regardless of what anyone on the Reds happens to make this year. Player salaries have zero effect on ticket prices.

If I had to pick a sleeper on the Reds team at the moment, a guy who might surprise people by having a good year, it would be Heisey. I do not like his downward cascading OB and I'd preferred Xavier Paul to him, but Heisey's still in the fold and I'm getting the sneaking suspicion that confidence in Heisey might be a factor in the lack of other moves this offseason (e.g. why the Reds aren't showing any interest in Nelson Cruz).

Top 10 teams all pass 40 WAR a team, our budget is about $110 mil... our team needs to hit at least $2.75 million / WAR.

IMO, teams like the Reds need to focus only on 2+ WAR players. I don't think we're a team that can have much of a middle class. Pay 4 high level position players, 3 starters, and 1 or 2 releivers, and hope you can fill out the rest of the roster from the farm,

Have ticket prices/concessions/parking risen faster than inflation?

As far as advertising money - do you think the companies paying that advertising are draining their coffers? I'm pretty sure they are passing their advertising costs onto the consumers of their products.

Public taxes pay for the stadiums and offset the sweetheart deals given to these teams/owners. Entertainment taxes are added into hotel bills. TV/Radio deals are paid for by advertisers. Advertisers pass that cost onto their consumers. The worst part is that it is not just the baseball fans that pay for the players salaries.

Ticket prices are just a very small drop in the bucket.

Last I checked, the concept of advertising isn't exclusively tied to baseball. If Toyota wants to spend a million dollars marketing in Cincinnati, they're gonna do it regardless of whether Chris Heisey is making $1.7 million dollars.

The As settling with Luke Gregerson for more than $5 Million is crazy high.

I would argue, the Reds paying Chris Heisey any money, is too much.

Other minor leagues who stink at hitting but stick around because of their defense.
What numbers are you using to figure that Fuld is at least equal to Heisey defensively? And offensively, it's not even close.

As far as LaMarre and Rodriguez, are you saying that you'd rather let one of them be the team's fourth outfielder just to avoid paying Heisey 1.7 mil? LaMarre has played all of 3 games in Louisville.

Yes. The sooner Reds fans figure out that Heisey isn't good, the sooner the FO upgrades the team.

    Ugh. Sneaky thread title.

Honest question - why not "Heisey's Crazy High Salary?"
