Re: Sooner or later the Reds and Padres have to make a deal

As a defensive WAR skeptic, I don't think he was a 4 win player last year (btw, baseball-reference.com says he had 2.1 offensive wins and 1.5 defensive). On the other hand, I think WAR sells him way short for saying he's had an 8.5-win-above replacement career.

Every team in baseball could use Denorfia, some as a starter, some as a 4th OF, but he is innately useful.
". . . acquiring J. Blanton from Oakland for, apparently, Bailey/Cueto, Votto and a lesser prospect. I do it in a second . . . The Reds' equation this year is simple: Make Matt Belisle your #3 starter . . . trade for Blanton, win 85 or more, be in the mix all summer." - Paul Daugherty, Feb. 8, 2008

I like the potential of a 4 win player more than an actual 4 win player but that's just me.

What potential, though? Denorfia has a career 341 OBP. If he was in our OF, that could very well be the highest OBP of any Reds OF. Same if he just replicated last year's 337.

Denorfia is a legit starting OF.
They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
