    And If Hamilton Isn't Ready.....

    The question of spring training:

If Billy Hamilton shows in spring training he isn't ready then what?
If you think small, you'll go nowhere in life.

Gotta ask Phillips to lead off and pray for an OBP that looks more like those three good months from 2013, don't they?

It's a good question, but I think they give Hamilton every opportunity to make it happen.

    You stick with him.

His defense alone should justify keeping him in the majors.

I don't think spring training is going to prove anything. If he has a terrible spring then everyone is even more worried. If he has a great spring then people will say he needs to do it when games count. How he does in April and into May is what matters when it comes to "then what".

And if his bat is no better than what Drew Stubbs was?

And that's how I am taking this question. Basically it is asking, "What happens if Billy flames out?", timeline is hardly the point.

I wouldn't be so quick to think of him as a sure thing.

I'm bullish on him, but there is a legitimate chance for failure.

Isn't that the same thing as not being ready?

If he could hit like Stubbs, I'd be thrilled. With his speed and base stealing, he'd score 90 runs. That would be a decent rookie season for him.

Worst case, if Billy struggles really badly offensively, you drop him to the #8 spot in the lineup. You can also use Heisy and Schumaker to spot start against tough matchups.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

60 spring training plate appearances shouldn't determine one way or the other whether Hamilton is ready or not. That decision should be made off of his results from last season in the Minors and the Majors.

He can still be used as a pinch-runner 40-50 times when he doesn't start. He proved how valuable he is being used that way last Fall.

He's going to bring value to the ball-club, making them very dangerous in the late innings with his base-stealing ability.

Drew Stubbs had a .610 OPS in 2012 and was a 1 win player. Hamilton should provide more production outside his bat than Stubbs did. He'd likely have to OPS below .550 to be replacement level overall. That's worse than Taveras in 2009.

He can't flame out. He's too fast.

I can't imagine Hamilton to be any worse than Stubbs. If he just OBP's .300 he will be a factor in the lineup.
