Kershaw breaks 30 million per year ave barrier

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/0...n-kershaw.html

The Dodgers have agreed to an extension with ace southpaw Clayton Kershaw, reports ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne (via Twitter). The deal is for seven years and $215MM, and includes an out clause that can be exercised after five years.

Kershaw's representatives at Excel Sports Management have secured their client the highest-ever annual salary for a baseball player. His $30.7MM AAV bests those achieved in the one-year, $28MM deal for Roger Clemens back in 2007 and Alex Rodriguez's ten-year, $275MM deal. And through the out clause, Kershaw will have the opportunity to hit the open market at just 30 years of age.

He only had 10 rbi last year, he better turn that around.

Edit: His 10 RBI in 92 PA was an ever so slightly better rate than Votto's 73 in 726 PA. Snark fail.

Sweet jeebus, $30m/7 per for a pitcher. The guy's only 25, but that may be the biggest gamble I've ever seen.

Kiss Homer Bailey good bye after this season.

They get him from ages 25 to 32, likely his prime years, for the best pitcher in baseball.

It could be much worse I guess.

I'd like to see Kershaw be more aggressive and throw 3-7 MPH harder. The Dodgers don't pay him to have a great WHIP or FxIP.

While I have to admit my hopes are not up for the Reds retaining Homer, this deal does not shake me in regards to a Bailey extension.

For all intensive purposes, Kershaw is a 6 WAR pitcher and Bailey is a 3 WAR pitcher. That's a difference of 15 MM on the free market, putting Bailey in the 15 MM ballpark.

They could have gone 10 years.

I also continue to think that one of the reasons that Walt "has no money" now is that he's trying to sign Homer and/or Latos -- and has funds earmarked for that purpose.

I can totally see that as well, though I bet he has his sights set on Latos first, I sure would.
