    Redszone Dynasty League 2014 -- Season 6

Welcome to the 6th season of the Redszone Dynasty League!

Time to get the ball rolling for another action-packed year of fantasy baseball excitement. (not excrement)

Yahoo fantasy baseball is likely going to open on or about Tuesday February 4th (the week after the Super Bowl). I will fire up the league on that date. Each of you should receive an email from Yahoo asking you to register and claim your team, so be sure to check the email account you used to sign up last year.

Once everyone gets registered for the league I will be able to add all our players to our rosters. I will need to know which 30 players you want to keep. You might have had more than 30 players at the end of the season if you had players on the Disabled List. I will be sending you PMs here on Redszone soon. In the PM will be your full roster, so just tell me which guys you want to cut to get down to 30 players. I will need your reply ASAP.

You will also get to keep up to 2 players who were on your NA roster at the end of the season.

Congratulations to redsfandan for winning the championship again last year. He succesfully defended his title from 2011 and 2012. Can he make it four in a row this year? He said he was dropping out of the league last October, but he is having second thoughts.

I am planning a series of posts in this thread to share a lot of cool information about the history of our league, so check back often and share your thoughts and observations. If we can get lots of discussion going in this thread throughout the season it will make the league even more fun. I will be posting updates for the All-Time Standings and the Record book. Feel free to chime in with any cool stuff you can dig up.

To make sure you don't miss anything, please subscribe to this thread by clicking on "Thread Tools" at the top of this post, then click on "Subscribe to this Thread", then select "Instant Notification by Email" from the dropdown box.

Good luck with your teams this year!

Re: Redszone Dynasty League 2014 -- Season 6

Here is our updated Record Book:

Redszone Dynasty League Record Book -- Single-season Records
    Code:
    Category	Total	Team Season
    Runs 1024	mbgrayson	2009
    RBIs 1007	Atomic Dumpling	2011
    Home Runs	281	redsfandan	2011
    Stolen Bases	205	redsfandan	2011
Batting Average	0.289	Atomic Dumpling	2009
    		0.289	redsfandan	2009
    Wins 99	mbgrayson	2012
    Strikeouts	1347	redsfandan	2013
    ERA 2.94	mbgrayson	2011
    Saves 171	redsfandan	2013
    WHIP 1.11	mbgrayson	2011
Total Points	112.5	Atomic Dumpling	2010
We saw two records broken in 2013:
Redsfandan's 1347 Strikeouts broke Atomic Dumpling's record of 1343 Strikeouts set in 2012.
Redsfandan's 171 Saves broke Atomic Dumpling's record of 157 Saves set in 2011.

We also had some close calls:
BaseCloggers and redsfandan both had WHIPs of 1.12 and nearly matched the league record of 1.11 set by mbgrayson in 2011.
Will M had 97 Wins, which came very close to the league record of 99 set by mbgrayson in 2012.

Which of these league records is most likely to be surpassed in 2014?

Re: Redszone Dynasty League 2014 -- Season 6

Here are the final point standings for each year of our league. I added up the total points to find the All-Time Standings:

    All-Time Standings (Points Method)

    Code:
    Team 2009	2010	2011	2012	2013	Total	AVG	All-Time Rank
    Atomic Dumpling 108	112.5	88	96	84.5	489	97.8	1
    mbgrayson 93.5	98	88.5	85	70	435	87	2
    redsfandan 36.5	61.5	107	108	105	418	83.6	3
    TRF's debacle 69.5	64	55	79	65	332.5	66.5	4
    RedsManRick / Reds77	62.5	48.5	80	64.5	62	317.5	63.5	5
    Gilpdawg 62	76	70	58	47.5	313.5	62.7	6
    Will M / stephenk29	72	51.5	51	36.5	99	310	62	7
    camisadelgolf is #1	22.5	75	53	67	71.5	289	57.8	8
    The BaseCloggers	66	38	42.5	66	68	280.5	56.1	9
    CRF2000 57.5	46.5	57	47	47	255	51	10
    nate 75.5	65	28	45	25.5	239	47.8	11
    GAllen5862 / WMR	54.5	43.5	60	28	35	221	44.2	12

    Ownership changes:
    • Will M took over his team before the 2013 season. The team was owned by stephenk29 for the 2009-12 seasons.
    • RedsManRick took over his team before the 2011 season. The team was owned by Reds77 for the 2009-10 seasons.
    • GAllen5862 also took over his team before the 2011 season. The team was owned by WMR for the 2009-10 seasons.
    • It is an added challenge to take over someone else's team, especially one that wasn't good. It can take a long time to remodel the team, shift strategies and build it up the way you like it.

    Observations on the Rankings:

Will M moved up 3 slots in 2013. RedsManRick moved up one slot this year. CRF2000 also moved up one spot.

Atomic Dumpling won the first two championships and redsfandan won the next three championships. Mbgrayson hasn't won a championship but still holds the runner-up slot in the All-Time Standings because he finished second for the first three seasons and came in third once and fifth once. Redsfandan absolutely dominated the league the last three years but comes in third here because he did not fare well in 2009 and 2010. During the draft he employed a strategy of taking lots of young prospects, then waited for them to mature and supplemented them with some astute trades to bullrush his way to the top of the league.

    Top 4 Turnaround Seasons:
    • The record for the biggest point gain in one season is the 62.5 point leap that Will M made when he took over his team in 2013. He took the team from 36.5 points to 99 points, and from 11th place to 2nd place in one giant surge. Wow.
    • The second-best point increase from one season to the next is the 52.5 point jump that camisadelgolf made from 2009-2010 when he went from last place to 4th place. Impressive.
    • The third-best turnaround is the 45.5 point jump that redsfandan's team made between 2010 and 2011 when he went from 7th place to 1st place and won his first league title.
    • RedsManRick made a 31.5 point jump in 2011.

This goes to show that it is possible to drastically improve your team very quickly. Redsfandan finished second-to-last in 2009 yet two years later he won the championship. Will M went from 11th to 2nd in one year. No matter how bad your team may be one year, you can turn it around the next with some aggressive trading and savvy management.

Soon I will post the All Time Standings in a different manner. The results will be different.

Re: Redszone Dynasty League 2014 -- Season 6

Yahoo has announced they will be firing up fantasy baseball on January 30th, which is Thursday of this week. That is a few days earlier than in the past.

They also said the prospect pool will be deeper than in prior years.

This is what the All-Time Standings would look like if all five seasons of our league were combined into one long season. For example, to find the total runs I added up how many runs each team scored from 2009-2013. The team with the most total runs over those 5 seasons got 12 points, the team with the 2nd most total runs got 11 points and so on. I repeated this exercise for all 10 scoring categories to find the Total Points.

You can compare how this method of computing the All Time Standings results in some differences from the Points Method described in a post above:
    • Mbgrayson and redsfandan are tied for 2nd place here, whereas mbgrayson is 2nd and redsfandan 3rd in the Points Method.
    • The #4 through #6 positions are reversed here. It is TRF's debacle #4, RedsManRick #5 then Gilpdawg #6 in the Points Method -- but Gilpdawg #4, RedsManRick #5 and TRF's debacle #6 here in the 5x5 Category Totals Method.
    • BaseCloggers passes Camisadelgolf is #1 in this method, swapping slots 8 and 9.
    • There is a wider range of scores in the 5x5 Category method (108 points for 1st, down to 31 points for 12th) vs the Points Method (97.8 points for 1st, down to 44.2 points for 12th)

Comparing this up-to-date chart with last year's chart:
    • Redsfandan erased a 12.5 point deficit and caught up to mbgrayson. Now they are tied for 2nd place.
    • RedsManRick passed TRF's debacle for 5th place, which is odd because TRF finished ahead of RedsManRick in the final 2013 standings. Rick didn't gain any points, but TRF fell 5 points. He is very slightly behind some people in several categories (7 Runs, 12 Homers, 1 Steal, 5 Wins, 2 Saves etc) and could easily gain those points back next season.
    • CRF2000 fell three spots from 7th to 10th even though he lost only 1.5 Total Points!
    • Many categories are extremely tight even after 5 whole seasons. Getting an extra handful of homers or steals this year could bump your team up a couple places in the all-time standings. We should continue to see big changes in the standings each year.

You can also see who the all-time leaders in each category are. You can use this chart to determine your team's strengths and weaknesses over the years and maybe figure out a way to improve your strategy. For example, my team has been great in the hitting stats but has pooped the bed in ERA and WHIP, so I can see that starting pitching has been my team's biggest weakness over the years. CRF2000 has had the opposite balance, so maybe we should consider making some trades with each other.

One thing I think is neat about these All-Time Standings is they can give teams who may be out of the running for a championship late in the year an additional motivational factor. Maybe a team can't win a league title this year but they can still gain ground in the All-Time Standings. From now on we not only fight for yearly championships, but we also fight to be the All-Time Champ. These standings may not mean that much now after only five seasons, but a few more years down the road it would be pretty cool to be the All-Time Leader after a decade-long run.

The league is live on Yahoo now. Everyone has been sent an invite to renew your team in the league.

If your team has more than 30 players (it probably does) I will need each of you to tell me which players you want to cut to get down to 30. Please do this ASAP! I can't assign your players to your roster until everyone signs up and sends me their cut list.

Is there no way to use the NA slots before we do our cuts?

Good question. I have been trying to figure out the best way to handle this situation.

I think there are only a handful of players on our rosters who were eligible for the NA roster at the end of the 2013 season. A very small number of prospects who didn't get September callups plus the Biogenesis suspensions. Only some of those few are actually labelled with NA eligibility right now.

We had planned to allow 30 keepers plus up to 2 NA players. So you can still do that, but check to see in the 2014 player list if your NA player from last year is still NA eligible this year.

We are all going to end up dropping some of our 30 keepers anyway when it is time to make draft picks, so if we have to drop an extra one now it shouldn't hurt too bad.

    Camisadelgolf,

In your case, you had Bubba Starling and Michael Pineda on your NA roster at the end of 2013. Ideally you should be able to keep them as your 2 NA slots this spring in addition to your 30 major leaguers. The problem is that only Starling is listed as NA eligible right now, while Pineda is not for some reason. So it is not possible to put him on your NA roster at this time.

I guess we could set him aside and put him on your team if/when he officially gets designated to the minors.

I think I might have more than 2 N/A players. Can you check for me? Plus I know a couple of my players are n/A from 50 day suspension etc. We are still doing 5 n/A slots this year correct?

We are adding 3 more NA slots this season yes, but only after our keepers have been set. So we will have the 2 NAs from last year + 3 more new ones = 5 total. The 3 new ones will be added after our keeper rosters have been set.

Looks like about half of our prospects from last year are NA eligible while the other half are not. I am not sure why. It might be based on whether the player is on their real team's 40-man roster.

I guess all we can do is allow the player to be placed on your NA roster if he is currently listed as NA eligible, but if he is not listed as NA eligible you will have to count him as one of your 30 keepers. Later when he is officially assigned to the minor leagues you can put him on your NA roster and open a spot on your regular roster for a draft pick.

    GAllen5862,

You had Tim Beckham and Max Stassi who got September callups and lost their NA eligibility. You also had Mike Olt and Jonathan Singleton who did not get September callups and I would expect them to get NA eligibility as soon as they get sent to minor league spring training by their clubs, but right now they do not have NA eligibility for some reason.

You also had two players retire, Roy Halladay and Mariano Rivera. So that clears up 2 roster slots. You still have 34 players and will need to get down to 30 in the next couple days.

    Everyone:

To see your roster from last year go to the league home page. Near the top right there is a dropdown box that says 2014. Click on it and select 2013, then click on your team name to see your final roster from last year. Count your players and if it is more than 30 you will have to send me a note telling me which players to cut.
