Ruminating on all the minor-league-with ML-invite, lowball, seemingly redundant signings we've had of late, I can't help but wonder if any of these are motivated less by a desire for that particular player and more to maintain a good relationship with a given agent. In other words, let's say Chris Nelson's agent is also Homer Bailey's agent (as far as I know that's not true). Does a team help an agent out by giving a marginal player a shot, in the hope that doing the agent a favor will help the more important negotiations down the road? Does anyone know if this goes on? And if so, could it explain some of the recent signings?
