I wouldn't trade Leake. I wouldn't sign Arroyo. I'm glad the Reds didn't make a QO, which was smart.

    Time to move on.

If the Reds have, say, $5 million to pay Arroyo, I'd rather they used it for a good fourth outfielder.

Bronson Arroyo says he hasn't received a single offer

Not making a QO to Arroyo may have been the best move of the offseason. That being said, if the Reds could get Arroyo to sign for 1 year for somewhere around 4-5 mil I'd do it. I wonder if Arroyo not getting any hard offers is making him rethink asking for 3 years.

Then what is your plan? Using a better starting pitcher (Cingrani) in either AAA or the bullpen while also paying Arroyo 8-10 times as much?

    Personally, I'd trade Leake.

Also, Cingrani may be better, but he is also a relative unknown. You know exactly what you get with Bronson.

Cingrani isn't really an unknown. He threw 100+ innings last year against big leaguers.

and struck out 120 in the process. My non-Reds fans friends were amazed when I dropped that knowledge on them: "Who?!"

That's why I said "relative unknown". He is the least tenured SP on the roster (by a lot). It's very possible he could have a terrible sophomore year. I don't think he will but you never know, you know?

He is clearly good enough to get a starting role though. Let's not forget that Arroyo has terrible seasons every 2 years or so. He pitches a lot of innings, but that does not mean they are going to be a lot of good innings.

Unless he gets hurt or goes Rick Ankiel,he isn't going to have a terrible season. You just don't go from 10 K/9 to sucking without injury or just flat out losing your mind.

Unless hitters figure him out, which has been known to happen on occasion.

Look, I like Cingrani. But he has barely 100 innings experience in MLB. It's not outside the realm of possibility for him to regress this year. We just don't have much of a frame of reference of what to expect because of his limited experience. That's all I was trying to say. Didn't mean to get so far off topic.

I do not think it is off topic as he is the pitcher Arroyo would bump if he were resigned with no corresponding move (Leake being traded).

It is certainly possible for Cingrani to have a sophmore slump. It is unlikely for his K rate to dip too much though, rookies do not come around often and put up a 10 k/9 over 100 innings. Ones that do tend to stick. If he keeps his K rate relatively high, he will be OK moving forward. Even if he has a sophmore slump, I am fine with that as it will help him moving forward.

The Reds would basically be paying millions to Arroyo to take valuable experience away from Cingrani. That I would not be OK with, even if Arroyo put a season up similar to last year. I enjoyed the heck out of watching Arroyo pitch for my Reds, and am grateful for all he did to help move this franchise in the right direction, but it is time to move on.

Hitters do figure pitchers out some. But I am having problems thinking of a guy who came out rocking 10 K/9 who went on to be figured out to the point where they weren't any good outside of an injury or losing their mind (Ankiel).

He's also pretty awesome at putting hitters away. Last year's stats:

    After 0-2 count: 85 PA, 4 BB, 1(!!!) H - .013 BA, .059 OBP
    After 1-2 count: 144 PA, 11 BB, 12 H - .091 BA, .167 OBP
    After 2-2 count: 135 PA, 16 BB, 13 H - .109 BA, .215 OBP

The 0-2 stat is one of my favorites to drop on people to add to the "WHO?" factor. Just for fun - the Cy Young winners: Kershaw was .108 and Scherzer .099.

Honestly seems like what a guy does when he has you 0-2 is one of the things hitters would get a book on and adjust towards league norms.

Sign Arroyo, trade Bailey for offense.

*Unless you can re-sign Bailey (which they can't).
