Baseball Prospectus Reds Top 10 list

Surprises? Ismael Guillon and Jose Ortiz made the list. Yorman Rodriguez is ranked ahead of Jesse Winker. David Holmberg isn't in the top 10.

They ranked Moscot pretty high, but reading their comments left me feeling a little down on him.

They did agree with what a lot of posters have been saying- that a few of these lower-level guys are going to blossom and make the Reds a top ten system, but no one can say which ones will actually do said blossoming...

FYI I wouldn't be angry if someone copied and pasted the article to my inbox.

BP never has been been all that great on prospect prognostication. Maybe it's been better in recent years, but it had a bad habit of reaching for deep cuts and missing on kids who were climbing steadily through the minors. This list certainly has that sort of feel to it.

My recollection was that they used to over-love unatheletic lefty 1B/DH hitters -- Billy Jo Robidoux types. But I stopped paying attention a while ago.

It is interesting that Travieso's velocity has fallen. Isn't it normally the opposite? Don't pitchers usually add an mph or two?

Frequently no. Some kids come in throwing as hard as they're ever going to throw. Colt Griffin and Mark Pawelec are two prominent examples. Projectability is one of those scout terms that sometimes gets overused or misapplied, but it's a real thing. If a kid has a smooth, easy stroke and a long, lean body, he's probably going to add some velo.

Yet if a kid is throwing a maximum effort 95 MPH heater, his arm might start wearing down. The knock I've seen from some on Travieso (and I tend to agree) is he puts a lot of effort into his heater. He pitches tight. He's almost the opposite of Robert Stephenson, who gets great explosion from a loose motion.
