At age 37, after injuries had ravaged his body for the previous 7 years, he hit: .277/.372/.496 in a full season. What I would give for a Red not named Joey Votto to come close to that this season.....

Was he as good as he was in his 20's? No, but only a handful of players in the history of the game ever were that good.

This. Griffey was a very good, productive player into his late 30s. He just couldn't stay on the field enough that that production would appear consistent to most casual fans.
Also, at the time of the trade, players were valued very differently than they are today. Cameron probably wouldn't have been included in the deal. But at the time of the trade it made sense, especially with the fact that griffey was only 30 at the time, and with both Kearns and Dunn on the horizon. Cameron was expendable.
Finally on the question of PEDs. I think (and I thought this even during the 90s) that Griffey would have done himself a tremendous favor by having himself tested if he wasn't using. But alas, he had other things to worry about. I think that question will be in the back of everyone's mind about any productive player in the 80s, 90s and 00s, though.

You are correct. I was just trying to make my point with a little humor. But I think Griffey's natural decline as he got older strongly suggests that he didn't use PED's, or he didn't use them enough to affect his production.

PED user who get older do decline aswell, some more than others. PED´s don´t have the same impact on individiuals.
Once again proving the point that... we have no idea.
