I keep wondering about Stephen Drew, too. He's still out there. Would he make sense? I have to think a Bailey extension and a Stephen Drew for the top of the lineup would stoke folks around here up again.

Now everyone will pick apart those two examples, ah RedsZone. Those are types of players, not guys they specifically should have obtained.

Point is that Bailey IMO would not excuse all the inaction on offense. But I certainly do see how a big time expensive player like Choo wouldn't have worked.
    Not picking apart those guys...

But those might qualify as "perfect risks" to some (not me). Nothing more.

I would say that no one in that 5 MM or less boat is a perfect solution for anything. Not a lottery ticket as some like to say, but more like a flip of the coin.

I am happy if this is true, but I hope this doesn't mean they feel Latos will be beyond their budget. As I would much rather have Latos as the guy for the rotation. If they can get them both, great, but Latos would be my pick to lockup.

    Mine too.

But more than anything, you make sure you keep at least one of them.

If this is true, mission accomplished.

And if Latos is going to get something close to Kershaw money I can accept that he may be just too expensive.

I can't imagine Latos will get close to Kershaw money. He's good, but he's not that good.

Yeah, I would say signing Bailey now doesn't foreclose signing Latos later. Walt and Bob likely don't know the answer to what will happen with Mat later. They can only control so much.

All the mocking and crap Walt gets.. yet he still manages to keep the team on track to contend for an extended period of time.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

Just fantastic news. This is what a winning franchise does. Get players and keep players like Votto, Bruce, Homer, Phillips, Cueto and Latos. These are the guys that are responsible for the Reds winning 90+ games on a regular basis and the organization shows that there's no problem keeping them around. I know they let Choo get away but out of every key member of the Reds over the last few years he was the only one that demanded an unreasonable number of years and amount of money, so now there's another team that has that burden. Mistakes have been made but I feel like Walt gets it right when it counts most and Castellini knows when to fork out the big bucks.

People want a perfect team and they want every weakness to be addressed but as long as there's top notch talent on the roster the Reds will continue to compete with and be one of the best teams in baseball. Rebuilding, trading away stars and giving up on signing stars is for chumps and should only be considered when it becomes a fact that you're team is too old or just plain out sucks! I know, it has worked for the Rays but when is the last time you talked to a Rays fan? I like how the Reds are doing things and feel good about the future!

An awful lot can happen in two years. Time will solve this as it usually does.

I think even if we don't resign Latos, this is a good move. Homer is going to be cheaper than Latos and you have to think the Reds have more knowledge about their starters than anyone else. The Reds would not be giving him that kind of money if they didn't truly believe he would live up to the contract, validating his health status and their views on his ability to perform at an elite level going forward.

If Cingrani shows he can be a dominant, healthy starter and Bob Steve does as well as we think he can, I think the Reds should keep the money for Latos in their pockets. You need to preserve roster/payroll flexibility as much as possible and having 3, ~20 million dollar guys locked into LT contract is simply too much risk.

    This has not happened yet.

If it does, I doubt they extend Latos.

I have a really, really hard time believe the Reds will let Latos get out of Cincinnati.

Cueto will likely be the odd man out, which is okay, you can't pay everyone. Leake they can probably get at an affordable rate.
