If Bailey is saying it's really close it's basically a done deal. Players don't come out out and say it unless it's happening. Announcement forthcoming.

Homer: 'I feel we're close' to a multi year deal. hammering out details, he said #reds

Homer also noted he hasn't bought a ticket to Florida, where an arbitration hearing would take place, & he doesn't own a suit or tie

He also said he doesn't know how to tie a tie — he suggested YouTube. Maybe Joey Votto, 'but he'd make it too complicated' Homer said

More from Homer Bailey, who says he's close to a long-term extension with the #Reds http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/201...erm-extension/ … via @Enquirer

It's not putting the cart before the horse, it's understanding that we don't have a clear idea of what Latos' value will be when he becomes a free agent in two years.

I was predicting a 5/7 deal for between 125 to 140 million over the last few months. With the last 2 year voidable by Bailey. Which is $17.5 to 20 million per year.

A 6 year deal for $100 including this year which is basically a $10 million year as it's what his arbitration #'s are going to be is 5 years @ $90 million is 18 million per year.

A lot of people didn't thing Bailey would command this but I fully expected this.

You can say that about any player 2 years out from FA, sure.

But there is one Kershaw on this planet and to speculate Latos will be in Kershaw's stratosphere in 2 years is a huge stretch.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Reds offer almost the same deal to Latos, later this summer to lock him down for the next few years. Then you move on to Leake or Cueto... Which ever first bites you sign, then you have Stephenson and Ciangrani rounding out the starting lineup till 2019 or 20...

Reds will have their core wrapped up for a long time in an era when pitchers are getting really expensive.

“It feels like we’re really close,” Bailey said. “That’s all I can say. This whole process has been a long drawn out deal. That’s the way it goes. To say this as confident as I’ve been, yeah, I think so.”

“Not so much. There are a lot of things that we have in place, I think,” Bailey said. “I feel like a majority of it is fairly worked out. It’s some of the little details, I think, that we’re really close with. With us being here and everybody in different time zones, it puts a little bit of a damper on things.”

Who are these people that would have laughed at this?

That is ridiculous. Starting Pitchers always get paid, they just do not get Kershaw money unless they are Kershaw. Latos is not Kershaw. Kershaw is younger, better, and plays for the Dodgers.

Actually you can't say it about most players. Most players are who the are two years from free agency, as most are already in their prime or past it.

Latos at age 22 had an #1 starter type season, then three solid #2 starter true seasons and showed significant improvement past year, pitching with bone spurs. The bone spurs were removed, and he's now in his prime years, when many pitchers turn the corner.

Latos is a prime candidate to break out and be a true #1 starter. You can't say that about too many other pitchers. I doubt he'll get as big of an offer as Kershaw, but if teams see him as a true #1 starter going forward, he'll get close.

His approach to tying knots might frustrate the average fan, but Votto's Windsors Above Replacement speaks for itself.

It's nearly impossible to tell the future yes.

As for telling the future and realizing the worth of a contract on a baseball player in the future that's a FT job that really talented people do. Of course we don't know. It's always as a crap shoot and often some crap.

    Ya gotta play to win

Yeah but it's only 2 hours Homer, it's not like you're doing spring training in Australia.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Two years ago, Bailey was 4.5+ ERA guy who never had more then 22 starts a season, and who many thought had an attitude problem. He was a back of the rotation starter. No way anyone thought he'd ever get a $100M contract at that point in his career.
