So maybe Hannahan begins the season in AAA rehabbing or working on it in Arizona. Reds could use Santiago and Schumaker as infield backups and keep an extra outfielder like Bernadina.

I like that idea. It's too bad the Reds even signed Hannahan to a 2-year deal. He's a backup third baseman (who can't play anywhere else on the field) with a bad stick. Why give a guy like that multiple years? Was there really a Jack Hannahan market out there that the Reds had to compete against? I know it was just $2 million per year, but it was one of those head-scratching moves by Walt. One-year deal? No problem. Two-year deal? Made absolutely no sense.

A few years ago a dude convinced someone to sell them a pizza for 10,000 bitcoins. Today they're worth 7 million.
I also had a guy I worked with telling me to buy $20 worth back in like 2009. Of course I didn't. He cashed out when he doubled his investment, which I remember being like $700. He'd assuredly be a millionaire today and so would I.
So from now on I'm investing $10 in every single shady thing that's offered to me.

I think Hannahan didn't say anything about his injury to Reds medical staff or coaches and just tried to tough it out through 2013. I would imagine the Reds weren't particularly happy about that.
And I'd put a red X next to the local beat writers for not finding out about this. A guy having an injury isn't a particularly controversial piece of news. I get that beat writers walk a fine line (see ex-Bengal beat writer Joe Reedy's farewell column in this AM's Enquirer) but a team injuries and reporting on them, particularly in the off season, is standard fare.

Opportunity for Chris Nelson.
Really would like to see him grab it.
An opening day bench of: Pena, Schumacher, Heisey, Bernadina, Nelson would be really nice if those last 2 guys and find what they lost in 2013.
This is sort of my line of thinking. I'm more puzzled by why the club kept this under wraps in the first place. Not quite sure how any writer was supposed to have a whiff of this having happened. Of course, I'm still not entirely clear how MLB sidesteps HIPAA, although I know there is something out there. But it's not a given that medical procedures are shared and absent a waiver on HIPAA, there's no way the medical staff can disclose anything.
As for what this will mean for the start of the season, obviously Hannahan would have to go to the 60 day DL for a roster spot to be opened. Has there been any talk about the length of time for recovery and also how his playing time in Spring Training effects the counting date for a 60 day DL stay?

I was thinking something along the lines of starting the season on the 60 day DL and we may not see him until June.
Any word on how hard Hannahan's is throwing post-surgery? Could he be our closer and free up Chapman to be a disgruntled starter against his will?
