    Lake Erie
    Hocking Hills
    Serpent Mound
Many spots on the Ohio river

All I got for natural, but southern Ohio and Lake Erie are both underrated for beauty.

Easy to spend too much time at the micro-breweries.

Here are the 7 brewers I'd target.

    Rogue Brewery, Portland
    Double Mountain, Hood River
    Lompac, Portland
    Gigantic Brewing Co, Portland
    Laurelwood Brewing Co, Portland
    Deschutes Brewery, Bend
    Ninkasi Brewing Co, Eugene

    For Iowa I would say:

    Iowa State Fair
    Field of Dreams
    Loess Hills
    Grotto of the Redemption
    Effigy Mounds National Monument
    Salisbury House
    Amana Colonies

And for the geeks, Riverside, Iowa http://www.trekfest.com

    just in ohio:

Hocking Hills, especially Old Man Cave

Garbry Big Woods Nature Reserve near Piqua

    Paint Creek State Park

    Sycamore Park in Batavia

Chilo Lock 34 Park & Crooked Run Nature Preserve near Chilo

there's a trail head near Athens that connects to the Appalachian Trail, but I can't remember it's name.

    Stillwater National Scenic River

of all the places I've been:

Mirror Lake at Medicine Bow Peak in Wyoming

Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota

the Black Hills of South Dakota

Blueridge Parkway, especially around Maggie Valley and Cherokee during late June

    Hocking Hills

    Glacier National Park

Garden of the Gods in southern Illinois

    The New River Gorge Bridge
Potomac Eagle (train ride through a gorge filled w/bald eagles)
    Seneca Rocks

this is a mixture of personal preferences and things that just occurred to me. Some would include Cranberry Glades or Hawks Nest or Blennerhasset Island or Blackwater Canyon or the gold-leaf dome of the state capitol.
I would add Dolly Sods Wilderness and Canaan Valley in general (Blackwater Falls is in that area). It is the most beautiful area of the state IMO.
    The Potomac Eagle is enjoyable.

Both are good but I prefer Columbus--much easier to get around with several kids in tow.

honorable mention: Mt. Vernon (George Washington's home)
I would add Colonial Williamsburg and about a zillion haunting battlefields. Man, is Virginia a history lover's paradise.

Blackwater Falls is where I filleted fish for the first time. also went tubing for the first time in my life in the Blackwater River; still one of my favorite memories growing up.

I have good friends who work at the Mariner's Museum and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, and others who live a few minutes from CW. They might have crossed paths with your brother at one time or another.

Yorktown is one of my favorite places. Battlefields are just a couple of minutes from the York River. It's a beautiful spot that also has a small beach that not too many people know about...yet. Decent pub or two down there, as well.
