Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Wednesday, July 23: Ty Washington, Billings . . . 3-4, HR (3), BB, 2 R. The little second baseman puts the ty in the typhoon that has been the Billings offense. Leading off for the Mustangs, he's racking up 3 points of slugging percentage (.481) per pound (160). Imagine if Brayan Pena (who's the same height) did that. He's also hitting .315.

Also notable on a night when Louisville's 8-game losing streak was mercifully put to rest . . .

    Hitters

Jason Bourgeois, Lou: 2-5, 2B, 3B, R, RBI. His ground-rule double in the 9th was a walkoff shot, scoring Tucker Barnhart with the run that snapped the skid.

Jack Hannahan, Lou: 4-4, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI. An executive decision was made that, since he's a rehab case and not a minor-leaguer, Hannahan wasn't eligible for the MiLPOD. But he's no longer just DHing. Played 1B.

    Neftali Soto, Lou: 2-4. R.

Moose Mattair, Pen: 3-4, HR (9).

Rossmel Perez, Pen: 3-4, 2B, RBI. For the record, Perez, a 5-9 catcher who is now batting an absurd .335, has hit .300 before. It was 2007, when the Venezuelan put up a .306 in the Dominican Summer League.

    Devin Lohman, Pen: 2-4, 2B.

Gabriel Ovalle, DSL Reds: 0-2, 3 BB, 2 R, 2 SB (18). The switch-hitting SS seems to understand the leadoff spot.

Erick Gabo, DSL Reds: 3-4, R, RBI.

Alex Blandino, Bill: 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI.

    Argenis Aldazoro, Bill: 1-3, BB, 2 R, SB (4).

    Kevin Franklin, Bill: 3B, R, 2 RBI.

    Dalton Carter, AZL: 2-4, R.

Luis Gonzalez, AZL: 3B, RBI. A 19-year-old (almost 20) SS.

    Jamodrick McGruder, Day: 1-3, BB, R, 2 SB (10).

    Avain Rachal, Day: 2-4, R, SB (10).

    Carlton Daal, Day: 2-4, 2B.

    Phil Ervin, Day: 2-4, R. That's 9 for his last 21.

    Daniel Jimenez, Rojos: 2-4, RBI.

    Pitchers

    Sal Romano, Day: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.

    Jon Moscot, Pen: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    David Holmberg, Lou: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K. Pitching to contact.

    Bernardo Moreta, AZL: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. First start of the year for the 21-y-o righthander, who sports a 2.12 ERA.

    Jairon Corcino, Rojos: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

    Brennan Bernardino, Bill: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Sv (3). Lefty's 0.00 ERA stretches to 14.1 IP, with 20 K.

    Brian Hunter, Bill: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Ty Sterner, Bill: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.

    Jose Veras, DSL Reds: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Ben Klimesh, Pen: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Got the W in his first game up from Bakersfield.

    Shane Dyer, Pen: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (10).

    Elvin Ramirez, Lou: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Thursday, July 24: Chadwick Tromp, AZL Reds . . . 3-4, 2 HR (3), 3 RBI. In 58 PA, the Aruban catcher now rocks not only the best name in the organization, but an average of .351 and OPS of .928. At 5-9, you'd think he'd have managed more than one walk, but perhaps they don't stress plate discipline in Oranjestad. At any rate, the Wick has stick.

Also notable on a night when not a single starting pitcher made the list . . .

    Hitters

Marquez Smith, Bake: 4-5, 2B, HR (18), 2 R, 5 RBI. Yes, it was a very close call. But it's hard for the 29-year-old slugger to win a tiebreaker when (presumably through no fault of his own) he's playing below his level.

Harold Riggins, Bake: 3-5, 2B, R, RBI. His best game so far in the organization.

Sebastian Elizalde, Bake: 2-4, BB, 3 R, RBI, SB (17).

    Hector Vargas, AZL: 2-3, 2B, 3 BB, 3 R. Batting .338, holding down SS.

Gavin LaValley, AZL: 3-4, 2B, 2 BB, R, 3 RBI. The Big Valley (round 4) checks in with a .400 OBP.

Shane Mardirosian, AZL: 2-4, BB, RBI, SB (1). The scrappy 2B (round 7) returned after a week-long injury stint.

    Tucker Barnhart, Lou: 1-1, 2 BB, R.

    Andy Sugilio, Rojos: 2-3, RBI. A 17-y-o, switching-hitting 3B.

    Carlos Mateo, Rojos: 2-4, R, SB (3).

    Moose Mattair, Pen: 2-4, 2 R, RBI. Over last 3 games, 7-12.

Rossmel Perez, Pen: 1-2, 2 BB, R. OBP at .398.

    Yorman, Pen: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 R.

Bryson Smith, Pen: 1-3, HR (1) (GS), 4 RBI. First hit since returning to Pensacola several days ago.

    Nick Benedetto, Day: 2-3, 2 2B, RBI.

Jonathan Reynoso, Day: 2-4, RBI, SB (4).

Avain Rachal, Day: 1-3, BB, R, SB (11).

Gabriel Rosa, Day: 1-3, BB, SB (9).

Brian O'Grady, Bill: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI. OPS .951. Getting an extended shot in CF.

    Aristides Aquino, Bill: 2-4, R, SB (7).

    Taylor Sparks, Bill: 2-4, R.

Raul Wallace, DSL Reds: 1-3, BB, R, 2 SB (6).

Pabel Manzanero, DSL Reds: 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI. An 18-y-o Venezuelan catcher.

    Pitchers

    Nick Howard, Day: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. So far so good for the No. 1 pick.

    Radhames Quezada, Day: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.

    Jairo Martinez, DSL Reds: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.

    Yerry Santos, DSL Reds: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Ty Boyles, AZL: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Bailed out starter Jacob Constante, who had a very rough go of it.

    Jacob Ehret, AZL: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Round 14.

    Jacob Johnson, Bake: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Fabio Castillo, Lou: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Tim Adleman, Pen: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Shane Dyer, Pen: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (11).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Aquino and Elizalde made BA's prospect hot sheet.

Would expect both of them to be very high on Reds' prospect lists going forward.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Friday, July 25, 2014. Michael Lorenzen: 1-2, HR (GS) and 4 IP, 3H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4K’s. Aquino swung a great bat AGAIN, but Lorenzen pitched well enough and supported himself to the maximum by hitting a grand slam. A full 23 players had multiple hit games in the Reds system, mocking what has happened to the bats on the big league team. Bucking hay (UGH!) this morning, so another delay.

    Hitters

    Jason Bourgeois: 2-5

    Ruben Gotay: 2-5

Jack Hanahan: 3-4, ready for the call up…what a difference maker he will be (?).

Ray Navaro: 2-4, 2 2B (12) he could be a difference maker. Seems to have no chance.

    Ryan Wright: 2-5

    Christ Berset: 2-4

    Travis Mattair: 2-4

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-5, 2B (5)

    Juan Duan: 2-3, HR (13)

    Zach Vincej: 3-4

    Sean Buckley: 2-4, HR (6)

    Tanner Rahier: 2-4

    Phil Ervin: 2-4, 2B (24). OPS of 1.026 in last 10 games!

    Carlton Daal: 2-3

    Francis Guererro: 3-4

    Carlos Mateo: 2-4

    Ernesto Liberatore: 2-4, 2B (4)

    Andy Sugilio: 2-3

    Leandro Santana: 2-4, 3B

    Ery Bernabel: 3-4

    Alex Blandino: 2-3, BB

    Aristides Aquino: 2-3, 2B (12), HR (10)

    Alberti Chaves: 3-4

    Pitchers

    Scott Diamond: 7.3 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4K

    Nick Travieso: 5 IP, 3H, 5 BB, 0 ER, 5 K

    Adolphi Telleria: 7 IP, 3H, 0 ER, 5K

Gavin LaValley, AZL: 3-4, 2B, 2 BB, R, 3 RBI. The Big Valley (round 4) checks in with a .400 OBP.

Thanks Mace.... The push to further the legend of the Big Valley continues.

Our regrets, lollipop. Glad, at least, that you could be there for him.

I just got home and will dash off a quick one during the rain delay.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Saturday, July 26: Reydel Medina, AZL Reds . . . 2-5, 2 HR (4), 4 RBI. The 21-year-old Cuban has begun to show a trend. Now and then he explodes. A raw, left-handed outfielder, Medina is now slugging .505.

Also notable on a night which proved that the trickle-down theory applies to organizational hitting (Pensacola, Dayton, Bakersfield and Billings combined for all of 11 hits) . . .

    Pitchers

    Luke Moran, Billings: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Unfortunately, the 22-year-old Texan took the loss.

Gregory Reinoso, Rojos: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 4 K. Over his past two games, the 19-y-o lefty has given up 4 hits in 9 IP.

Ben Lively, Pen: 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. For all the concern over his AA start--and no doubt, he has been surprisingly wild--Lively's ERA sits at a very decent 3.68.

    Ismael Guillon, Bake: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER 3 BB, 3 K.

    Conor Krauss, AZL Reds: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Round 20 out of Seton Hall.

    Tony Amezcua, Day: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Fabio Castillo, Lou: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Hitters

Kyle Waldrop, Pen: 2-4, 3B, HR (9). The long knocks represented 2 of the Wahoos' 3 hits.

Harold Riggins, Bake: 2-2, 2B, HR (8). Like Waldrop, his extra-base shots made up 2 of his team's 3 hits. The HR was Riggins' first as a Reds farmhand.

Jason Bourgeois, Lou: 2-4, R. Veteran outfielder is batting .444 over his last 8 games.

    Steve Selsky, Lou: 1-2, 2B, BB, R.

Neftali Soto, Lou: 2-2, 2 2B, RBI. The makeup game, suspended after 4 innings, is not yet official.

    Alex Blandino, Bill: 2-4, 2B.

Ty Washington, Bill: 2 SB (14).

    Jose Siri, AZL: 2-4, 2 RBI, R.

    Gabriel Ovalle, DSL Reds: 2-4, 2 2B.

    Ery Bernabel, DSL Reds: 3-4.

Francis Azcona, Rojos: 2-3, BB, R.

So sorry to hear that. Hug all of your loved ones from us at Redszone.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Sunday, July 27: Drew Hayes, Pensacola . . . 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. In early relief of Daniel Corcino, Hayes turned in the longest stint of his career, easily topping the 2.2 innings he worked in a 2011 game. The 2011 season was the one that established Hayes' credentials as a prospect. He saved 22 games for Dayton that year, with a 1.35 ERA. Since then, however, he's been in Pensacola with declining results. Hopefully, this very different outing will open a new chapter for the former high school quarterback, who, at 26, finds the pocket collapsing on him.

Also notable on a day in which Dayton pulled off the unlikely--perhaps unprecedented--feat of going two straight days without a hitter noted on the MiLPOD list . . .

    Pitchers

Juan Martinez, AZL: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. By the numbers, the slim Dominican lefty deserved to be at the top of the post. It was a dazzling spot of long relief. But he's 22 years old serving his second season in Goodyear, so there's that. With a 2.73 ERA and 30 K in 26.1 IP, it might be time for Martinez to see another state.

Amir Garrett, Day: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K. If we were to name an organizational Pitcher of the Month, it might very well be this guy. In his 5 July starts, the lefty hoopster hasn't once given up more than 5 hits, posting a .175 BAA. He's fanned 31 in 28.1 IP. And his June was just about as good.

Mikey O'Brien, Lou: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. He actually pitched Saturday, but the game was completed yesterday.

    Pedro Villarreal, Lou: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Completed the 7-inning shutout, combining with O'Brien for 10 K.

    Drew Cisco, Bake: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

    Kyle McMyne, Bake: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.

    Brennan Bernardino, Bill: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (4). The 26th-rounder extended his 0.00 ERA to 16 IP, with a snazzy 0.83 WHIP.

    Hitters

Gavin LaValley, AZL: 3-4, 2B, RBI. With well over 100 AB now, the 18-year-old Oklahoman (round 4) improved his BA to .324 and his OPS to .885.

Jose Siri, AZL: HR (2), SB (9).

Argenis Aldazoro, Bill: 2-2, BB, 2 R, 2 SB (6). The lefty Venezuelan, normally an OF, has been playing a lot of 1B for Billings.

    Garrett Boulware, Bill: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI.

Ty Washington, Bill: 1-4, 2B, RBI, SB (15). Stole home as Cory Thompson was swiping second.

Jason Bourgeois, Lou: 3-3, BB, 2 R. Batting .500 (14-28) over his last 7 games.

    Tucker Barnhart, Lou: 2-3.

Rey Navarro, Lou: 2-2, 2B. Batting .316 in AAA.

Feliz Perez, Lou: 4-8, 2B, R, 2 RBI. In the doubleheader.

Ryan Wright, Pen: 1-2, HR (10), 2 RBI.

    Marquez Smith, Bake: 1-3, HR (19), BB, 2 R.

Harold Riggins, Bake: 1-3, HR (9), BB, 2 R, 2 RBI. His 2 Bakersfield homers have come on consecutive days.

Sean Buckley, Bake: HR (7). Shoulder surgery still restricts him to DH.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2014)

Monday, July 28: Marquez Smith, Bakersfield . . . 4-5, 2 HR (21), 3 R, 5 RBI. Time to give it up for this guy. All right, he's 29 years old playing in High-A, although that part of it is strange. And he doesn't seem to have a firm position; lately, he's been playing 3B for the Blaze. But come on. The man now has 96 RBIs. Of those, 91--enough to comfortably lead the California League--have come in Bakersfield, even though he was gone for three weeks on a disappointing leave in Pensacola. The Marquis de Swat is also 2nd in the league in OBP at .423 and OPS at 1.023. Over the last 10 days, his OPS is a silly 1.399.

Also notable on a night rife with pitching (amazing how much the farms parrot the big club) . . .

    Pitchers

    Sal Romano, Day: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K. A career high in K for the big New Englander.

    Yoel De Jesus, Rojos: 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. And yet, no W for the 19-year-old righty. Sheesh.

    Wendolyn Bautista, DSL Reds: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. The righty has a 2.56 ERA, but he's 21.

    Bernardo Moreta, AZL: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Has made 2 starts now, and his line for them shows 10 IP, 1 ER, 0 BB, 11 K.

    David Holmberg, Lou: 6 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Well, it was a quality start. Technically.

    Israel Cuevas, AZL: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Seth Varner, Bill: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. The lefty from Miami U and Clermont Northeastern HS.

    Wagner Gomez, Bill: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

    Ty Sterner, Bill: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Has 23 K in 17.1 IP.

    Ryan Kemp, Bake: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Alejandro Chacin, Day: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, Sv (12).

    Curtis Partch, Lou: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Jose Veras, DSL Reds: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

    Eriberto Garcia, DSL Reds: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (8). An 18-yo closer.

    Hitters

Felix Perez, Lou: 3-5, 3 2B, 3 R, RBI. After a cold snap, he's 7-13 in his last 3 games. Anybody know a big-league team that could use a hot hitter?

Neftali Soto, Lou: 2-3, 2 RBI.

    Ruben Gotay, Lou: 2-4, BB, 3 R.

Thomas Neal, Lou: 2-4, 2B, RBI.

    Sebastian Elizalde, Bake: 3-5, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI. OPSing .862 in High-A, after a .941 tour in Dayton.

Yovan Gonzalez, Bake: 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI.

    Juan Duran, Pen: 2-4, 3B, R.

    Travis Mattair, Pen: 2-4, 2B.

Brodie Greene, Pen: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Jamodrick McGruder, Day: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI, SB (11).

Phil Ervin, Day: 1-3, BB, SB (23).

    Jonathan Reynoso, Day: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Ronald Bueno, Day: 1-3, 3B, R.

Robert Ramirez, Day: 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI.

Kevin Franklin, Bill: 2-4, 2B, 3B, R, RBI. Nice to see some sock from last year's 2nd-rounder.

    Brian O'Grady, Bill: 1-3, HR (4), BB, 2 R, 3 RBI.

Taylor Sparks, Bill: 1-3, HR (4), BB, 2 R, 3 RBI. Sparks and O'Grady have been producing across the board in very similar fashion, but this was a little over-the-top.

Ty Washington, Bill: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI. Little leadoff dude is now a point away from an .800 OPS.

Raul Wallace, DSL Reds: 2-3, 3B.

Junior Arias, AZL: 1-3, 2B. Now this one has me baffled. As we know, the Reds have two guys named Junior Arias. One is a toolsy outfielder who had a great start in Bakersfield but broke his leg and hasn't been heard from since. The other is a pitcher. I thought this one might be the outfielder in a sort of rehab start, but it's listed as the pitcher, batting third as a DH. Huh?

    Very sorry for your loss.
