Wednesday, July 23: Ty Washington, Billings . . . 3-4, HR (3), BB, 2 R. The little second baseman puts the ty in the typhoon that has been the Billings offense. Leading off for the Mustangs, he's racking up 3 points of slugging percentage (.481) per pound (160). Imagine if Brayan Pena (who's the same height) did that. He's also hitting .315.

At 5-9, you'd think he'd have managed more than one walk, but perhaps they don't stress plate discipline in Oranjestad. At any rate, the Wick has stick.

Aquino swung a great bat AGAIN, but Lorenzen pitched well enough and supported himself to the maximum by hitting a grand slam. Sunday, July 27: Drew Hayes, Pensacola . . . 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. In early relief of Daniel Corcino, Hayes turned in the longest stint of his career, easily topping the 2.2 innings he worked in a 2011 game. The 2011 season was the one that established Hayes' credentials as a prospect. He saved 22 games for Dayton that year, with a 1.35 ERA. Since then, however, he's been in Pensacola with declining results. Hopefully, this very different outing will open a new chapter for the former high school quarterback, who, at 26, finds the pocket collapsing on him.

Also notable on a day in which Dayton pulled off the unlikely--perhaps unprecedented--feat of going two straight days without a hitter noted on the MiLPOD list . . .

Pitchers

Juan Martinez, AZL: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. By the numbers, the slim Dominican lefty deserved to be at the top of the post. It was a dazzling spot of long relief. But he's 22 years old serving his second season in Goodyear, so there's that. With a 2.73 ERA and 30 K in 26.1 IP, it might be time for Martinez to see another state.

Amir Garrett, Day: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K. If we were to name an organizational Pitcher of the Month, it might very well be this guy. In his 5 July starts, the lefty hoopster hasn't once given up more than 5 hits, posting a .175 BAA. He's fanned 31 in 28.1 IP. And his June was just about as good.

Mikey O'Brien, Lou: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. He actually pitched Saturday, but the game was completed yesterday.

Pedro Villarreal, Lou: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Completed the 7-inning shutout, combining with O'Brien for 10 K.

Drew Cisco, Bake: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

Monday, July 28: Marquez Smith, Bakersfield . . . 4-5, 2 HR (21), 3 R, 5 RBI. Time to give it up for this guy. All right, he's 29 years old playing in High-A, although that part of it is strange. And he doesn't seem to have a firm position; lately, he's been playing 3B for the Blaze. But come on. The man now has 96 RBIs. Of those, 91--enough to comfortably lead the California League--have come in Bakersfield, even though he was gone for three weeks on a disappointing leave in Pensacola. The Marquis de Swat is also 2nd in the league in OBP at .423 and OPS at 1.023. Over the last 10 days, his OPS is a silly 1.399.
