    Reds Re-Sign Chris Nelson

By Steve Adams [April 7 at 2:57pm CST]

2:57pm: Nelson's contract contains a May 6 opt-out clause, tweets MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo.

2:28pm: Infielder Chris Nelson, who opted out of his minor league contract with Cincinnati at the end of Spring Training, has re-signed a minor league contract with the Reds and will report to Triple-A Louisville, the team announced on Twitter.

Nelson, 28, enjoyed a strong Spring Training with the Reds, batting .317/.348/.463 with a homer and three walks in 46 trips to the plate. Nelson bounced around to three teams last year, seeing time with the Rockies, Yankees and Angels. The Williams & Connolly client was originally selected by the Rockies with the ninth overall pick in the 2004 draft. Though he hasn't put together an impressive Major League stat line to this point, Nelson has raked at Triple-A, hitting .320/.367/.516 in 205 games. His best season in the Majors was in 2012, when he batted .301/.352/.458 with nine homers in 377 plate appearances.

Agreed. When Marshall and Chapman come back we find ourselves at a bullpen of (speculating and in order of competence) Ondrusek, Hoover, Lecure, Broxton, Marshall, Parra, Chapman.

I wonder if the Reds would consider eating Ondrusek's salary or pursuing a trade to make room? Does Hoover still have any options? Tough call... but if Hanrahan is fully back from TJ before July, that's something worth looking into pretty closely if I'm uncle Walt.

6:22pm: The PTBNL is "fairly significant," tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. It is worth bearing in mind, as Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com points out on Twitter, that 2013 draft picks still cannot technically be included in a deal.

It used to be (and maybe still is) that you couldn't trade a drafted player until he's been with you for an entire year

Yup, still is. Can't trade draftees until after the following year's draft.

Rays Designate Heath Bell For Assignment

By Zach Links [May 4, 2014 at 9:26am CDT]

The Rays have designated Heath Bell for assignment, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (on Twitter). It’s a potentially costly decision for Tampa Bay as they’re on the hook for $5.5MM of Bell’s $9MM salary.

The Rays can theoretically get out from under their financial obligation to Bell if they find a trade partner in the next ten days, but that won’t be easy. Bell, 36, is three years removed from his All-Star form and has struggled mightily thus far in 2014. In 13 outings (17.1 innings), Bell has a 7.27 ERA with 12 strikeouts and eight walks.
