Indians Designate George Kottaras For Assignment

By Jeff Todd [May 6, 2014 at 3:10pm CDT]

The Indians have designated catcher George Kottaras for assignment, tweets MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. With the move, an active roster space was cleared for reliever Josh Tomlin.

The 30-year-old Kottaras saw only four plate appearances during his brief stint with the Tribe, though he delivered two home runs and drew a walk in that time. Kottaras caught on in Cleveland with a minor league deal after being released by the Cubs late in the spring. (He had been picked up by Chicago from the Royals via trade, but lost the backup battle.) Kottaras has drawn attention in the past for his ability to get on base (.355 OBP since 2012), and could appeal to some other clubs around the league.

    Rays Release Heath Bell

By Zach Links [May 11, 2014 at 8:02am CDT]

The Rays have released reliever Heath Bell, according to the MLB.com transactions page. Tampa Bay designated the 36-year-old for assignment one week ago.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise since Bell didn’t figure to draw a ton of trade interest. By releasing Bell, the Rays will continue to be on the hook for $5.5MM of his $9MM salary, per the terms of their trade that brought him in.

The Reds have released pitcher Nick Schmidt, tweets Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish. The 28-year-old lefty pitched 14 1/3 innings for Triple-A Louisville, posting a 7.53 ERA with 11 strikeouts and ten walks. He had previously pitched in the Padres and Rockies systems.

I see Carlos Gomez had back spasms last night so now he is going to serve his three game suspension for the Easter fight.

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that Matt LaPorta has asked for and been granted his release from the Mexican League’s Campeche Pirates (Twitter link). The former No. 7 overall draft pick and top prospect batted .286/.366/.555 with seven homers in 32 games for Campeche.

Was told by 2 sources that Kyle Farnsworth is finalizing a deal with either Philly or Cinci by tomorrow. Likely major league deal

Hearing from source that denied Farnsworth going to #reds

    ctrent @ctrent 22s
All that said, I’d be shocked. SHOCKED if the #Reds signed Farnsworth. I have people telling me it’s not happening, so there’s that

Red Sox resign Drew for 10M$ this year -- which is his 14.1M$ he would have received as a qualifying offer.

seems pretty generous of the Red Sox to me

I wouldn't have been surprised if he could have got a better offer next month.

Several teams could have used an upgrade at SS, once the draft pick compensation was removed.

2:44pm: Drew will play short for Boston, tweets Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, which of course means that Bogaerts will shift to third. He will go directly onto the active MLB roster but spend a week or more getting back up to speed in the minors, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (Twitter links). (As Joel Sherman of the New York Post explains on Twitter, Drew has to join the active roster because he signed a major league deal.)
