Wednesday, April 16, 2014...Minor League Updates

Some highly-touted, Reds' farmhands will be on the mound tonight:

Louisville - The second-place Bats (6-5) are hosting the division-leading Indianapolis Indians.
Sean Marshall pitched the first inning again for Louisville. Ex-Red Chris Dickerson led off for Indianapolis and took Marshall deep. Sean retires the next three batters in order. Tim Crabbe (1.59 ERA) is scheduled to take over on the bump.

Note: I stand corrected. I thought I saw that Tim Crabbe was scheduled to pitch tonight. Instead it will be Nick Schmidt. Sean Marshall, as expected, only went one inning.

Jason Bourgeois leads off for Louisville and returns the favor, his first round-tripper of the year.

Pensacola - The Blue Wahoo (7-5) are leading their division. They will send Robert Stephenson to the mound. Stephenson (3.86 ERA) is looking to rebound from an uncharacteristic bad outing. That game will start in about 45 minutes.

Dayton - The Dragons will hand the ball to Ismael Guillon (1.64 ERA) tonight. When he has his control he is as hard to hit as anyone in the Reds' organization, IMHO. Dayton (8-3) leads their division by a game and a half.

Bakersfield - Blake Lively (0.82 ERA) will be chunkin' the old pumpkin seed for the Blaze. Bakersfield (10-3) is a game in front in their division.

Louisville is working their pitching backwards today. Nick Schmidt hurled the second inning. He gave up a hit and a walk, striking out three. Now Tim Crabbe is coming on. 1-1 after two full.

Tim Crabbe sets Indy down in order in the third. Still 1-1.

Crabbe works around a single and a walk in the top of the fourth. Bats have loaded the bases with two gone in the home half. Singles by Nelson and Wilson. A walk to Tucker Barnhart.

Woohoo! Ryan LaMarre with a salami! 5-1 Bats.

The Clinton lead-off batter reached on an error and was immediately picked off. A fly out and a strike out later and the top half of the first is over. Dragons are coming up to bat.

Dayton gets a walk to Jeff Gelalich who is then picked off. No score after one.

Guillon works a 1-2-3 second. Clinton held hitless through three. Thanks to a pick-off in the first and a double play in the third, Guillon has faced the minimum. Dayton bats need to wake up.

Dayton is gone in the bottom of the third. Neither team has a hit yet.

Guillon mows them down in the fourth. Dayton goes quietly. Both pitchers have faced the minimum through four hitless innings.

Stephenson walks two in the first but emerges unscathed. No score after one half down in Pensacola.

Navarro and Yorman have both been caught stealing in the bottom half of the first. Lutz up with the bases empty.

Stephenson allows a two-out single and nothing else in the second.

A 1-2-3 third for Stephenson in the third in a scoreless affair.

Indianapolis gets a run back in the top of the fifth off of Tim Crabbe. An infield single and a two-out double. 5-2 Bats midway home.

Crabbe bounces back with a 1-2-3 sixth.

    California League
    Marquez Smith, Bakersfield
    (.444/.500/.917, 10 G, 16-for-36, 6 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 8 R, 5 BB, 5 K)
Smith is 29 years old in a league with an average age of 23 and was a Double-A Southern League Player of the Week back in May 2009, so it's strange to see him with the Blaze. There's certainly no arguing with his output, however -- Smith leads the Minor Leagues with a .917 slugging percentage, 1.417 OPS and 19 RBIs. The slugger has at least one RBI in all but one of his 10 games, leading Bakersfield to a league-best 9-2 record and two-game lead in the North Division.
    Bakersfield's Smith clears bases

Guillon wobbling a bit in the top of the fifth. He hit the first batter and walked the second. A sac bunt has runners at second and third with one away. Guillon gives up his first hit on the night. 1-0 Clinton. Runners on the corners. A sac bunt puts runners on second and third. Guillon strikes out the next batter to end the threat. Dayton trails 1-0 in the middle of the fifth.

Dragons go meekly in the fifth.

Pensacola game finally updated on Milb.com. Wahoo first had a walk to Navarro and a caught stealing. Rodriguez with an infield single and then caught stealing. Those proved costly as Lutz doubled.

Indianapolis chipping away at the lead, pushes a run across in the seventh. Tim Crabbe's night is done. His line is: 4.1IP 4H 2R 2ER 2BB 1K. Ryan Dennick came on and got the last two outs of the seventh. 5-3 Bats as they stretch in the seventh inning.

Ismael Guillon's night is done. He gave up a lead-off single in the sixth and then picked the runner off. He walked the next batter and that was all. His line: 5.1IP 2H 1R 1ER 3BB 3K. Ryan Dennick came on and got two fly balls to end the Clinton sixth. 1-0 Dragons trail, as they look for their first hit of the game.

Stephenson in a jam in the fourth. A one-out walk starts the trouble. Stephenson induces what should have been an inning ending double play. The ball was dropped on the turn. A passed ball moves the runners to second and third. Stephenson walks another batter to load them up. A pop up yields the second out. And the third walk of the inning pushes across the game's first run.
A strike out ends the threat. I believe that run is unearned. In any case, the Biscuits have struck for a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

    Great updates!

Stephenson's control is really off these last 2 games.

The Bats push the lead back up to four in the bottom of the seventh. LaMarre singles, an error puts another runner on base. A Irribarren double brings them both home. 7-3 after seven.

Dennick set down Indianapolis in the top of the 8th.

Lutz, leading off the bottom of the fourth, bunts down the third base line and is called out on a close play. Lutz is livid. He can really run for a big man.
Selsky walks with one out. Anderson puts a charge into one but it is hauled in for the second out. Mattair swings and comes up empty. 1-0 Biscuits through four.
