They had more than nine relief appearances from the rotation. Roger Nelson (12 starts, 2 relief) and Tom Carroll (13 starts, 3 relief) shared time as the fifth starter--Nelson in the first half of the season, and T. Carroll in the second half. The remaining starts were either spot starts by relievers (three by Clay Carroll, and one each by Tom Hall and Dick Baney), or September callups (two by Pat Darcy).


It was not uncommon in those days for the #4 starter to pick up a handful of relief appearances over the course of the season, and and even for the top starters in the rotation to sometimes make one or two relief appearances a season. (Most pitching staffs had only 9 or 10 pitchers.) Very few (if any) clubs had a set #5 starter, and most clubs would skip over their #5 starter whenever possible.
