    ESPN The Magazine: Yasiel Puig's Defection Story

    No One Walks Off The Island
    http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/stor...g-journey-cuba

    Two years ago, Yasiel Puig fled Cuba in the hands of black-market smugglers. This is the story of how the cost of the defection journey-in money and human lives-shadows him still.

    Unfortunately it is not possible to leave the country any other way right now.

    I noticed Chapman mentioned, I hope for the sake of MLB that all these Cuban cases with smuggling can be cleared up some way.

    Puig was persuaded by a boxer friend to defect. The journey to actually get off the island was fraught with peril. He was taken to Cancun where a rival group of smugglers took him and he eventually landed in Mexico City. Puig got to the US and signed with the Dodgers. The Dodgers and other teams don't care about the smuggling - which is a common method of defection. The first group of smugglers are harassing Puig for the money he owes them for the defection. Meanwhile an attorney in Miami has clients that are suing Puig (and Aroldis Chapman) because they were jailed in Cuba due to their testimony.

    Good grief. That was at least 4 visits to the can of reading material.

    Still, sometimes it's easy to forget what these guys have to go through in order to play baseball for us. Wow.

    Chapman has been going through similar extortion. This article pieces together all those weird things that have happened with Chappy over the past few years;
