Monday, April 28, 2014...Minor League UpdatesL

    Louisville is at Buffalo tonight.

Chad Reineke is starting for the Bats, and taking it on the chin early. He has given up 4 runs so far with only one out in the bottom of the second.

Skip Schumaker is beginning his rehab stint. He doubled in his first at-bat off of ex-Blue Jay, Kyle Drabek.

    Bats down 4-zip early.

Correction: Before I could finish typing this post, Reineke has allowed two more runs. Bats are behind 6-0 now.

Okay, I need to stop typing. 7-0. Reineke out, Rogers in.

Dayton is nearly underway. They are hosting the Lugnuts of Lansing.

Ismael Guillon will serving up the offerings for the Dragons. Over/under on hits he will give up is 4.5. I will take the under.

The leadoff hitter is Dickie Joe Thon, son of Dickie Thon. Thon played shortstop for the Astros, among other teams, and was on his way to one very nice career when he got hit in the head with a pitch.

Dayton's staff ERA is 2.34. Nice. They run one anemic lineup out there though.

Dayton's record stands at 15-7. They lead their division of the Midwest League by a game and a half. Of their 22 games, 19 have come against teams with winning records. So, they aren't feasting on the M.L. dregs.

Buffalo just keeps piling it on, getting to Sharky for two runs in the third. 9-0 now.

Louisville has loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on singles by Thomas Neal and Max Ramirez, along with a walk to Mike Costanzo.

Louisville gets one back on a sac fly. They are still batting. Schumaker stroked his second hit of the game, a single, to reload the bases. Ruben Gotay followed with his second single to plate another run. Louisville cuts the lead to 9-2.

Guillon allowed a single and struck out a batter in a scoreless top of the first.

Adonys Cardona left after facing just two Dragons' hitters. Gelalich singled, Daal walked, a wild pitch has runners at second and third. Roberto Espinosa is coming on and will get as long as he needs to warm up, due to the injury to Cardona.

Pensacola (10-14) is playing host to Mississippi. The game is just getting started.

Michael Lorenzen (1.52) gets the starting nod. His control seems to better here early in the season. (7 walks in 23.2 innings pitched). His opposing number, J.R. Graham is sporting a shiny 1.17 ERA. He must be on a very limited pitch count though. In four previous starts, he has compiled just 15.1 innings of work.

Ray Chang commits the rare double error on one play. One fielding and one throwing. Lorenzen works around it to post a scoreless first.

    Wahoos coming to the plate.

Cheese and crackers! (My country neighbor used to use that expression a lot.) I need to insult the Dragons' lineup more often. They have batted around and then some in the bottom of the first.

Gelalich singled, Daal walked, Ervin walked, Elizalde's double cleared the bases (but he was out trying for three), Rahier singled, Mateo singled, Buckley singled home a run, Hudson singled home run number five, McGruder struck out, Gelalich's second single of the inning brings home run number six and Daal flies out.

After one exciting inning of play, Dayton 6-0.

Ismael Guillon - 4 straight walks in the 2nd. 6-3 Dragons, Guillon still on the mound.

Guillon did what he does. He walked four and struck out two in that inning. Didn't give up a hit, but allowed 3 runs, two of which were earned (error turning a DP that would have ended the inning allowed a third run to score).

Louisville getting pounded still. 13-4 at the moment. Skip Schumaker has come out of the game. But not before whacking his second double and driving in a run. For the night he was 3-4, single, 2 doubles, run scored and run driven in.

Mississippi scored single runs in the second and third to jump ahead 2-zip. But now Pensacola has tied the game back up with single markers in both the third and fourth innings.

    Lorenzen, so far, has this line: 5IP 7H 2R 2ER 1BB 4K.

Juan Silverio (.343) and Ray Chang have both doubled and scored a run. Beau Amaral, hitting in the leadoff spot, has singled, walked and driven in a run.

    Dayton leads 8-3 after five.

Ismael Guillon, as Doug noted, was temporarily wild in the second. This led to three runs for Lansing. If you took the under, go collect your money. Guillon allowed just two base hits. 5IP 2H 3R 2ER 4BB 6K.

Jeff Gelalich has singled three times. Sebastian Elizalde has singled, doubled and walked. Phil Ervin has doubled, walk and scored twice.

Guillon's hits allowed totals in his five starts are as follows: 3,1,2,2,2.

Could we see a Corky Miller, the pitcher appearance tonight? Louisville is down 17-4 and heading to the 8th. They have used 6 pitchers already.

Forget pine tar; it is impossible to hit a baseball slathered with mustache wax. =)

The carnage is over in Buffalo. Louisville falls 17-5.

Lee Hyde pitched a scoreless frame as did Ryan Dennick. Pretty much every other pitcher that toed the rubber got blistered.

Louisville's offensive effort was not bad. Leadoff hitter, Jason Bourgeois, had six at-bats in nine innings.

Skip Schumaker, making his first rehab start, 3-4 single, two doubles, RS, RBI.
Ruben Gotay (.318) 2-4 two singles, walk, RBI.
Thomas Neal 2-5 two singles, RS, RBI.
Argenis Dias 1-2 single, two walks, RS, RBI.

Pensacola is holding onto a 4-2 lead through seven.

Michael Lorenzen went the first five.
Drew Hayes, apparently out of the closer role for now, pitched two shutout innings. He did not allow a hit, walked two and struck out two.
Fabian Williamson has come on in the top of the 8th to make things interesting. He has allowed hits to the first two batters he has faced.

Blue Fish offense has been pretty spread out with no hitter having more than one hit or one run scored or one run batted in. Bryan Anderson has collected two free passes.

Update: Fabian Williamson hit the first batter he faced, then allowed two singles and, finally, walked a run in to cut the lead to one run.
Jamie Walczak fanned the first he faced. He was not so fortunate with the second batter. Walczak allowed a bases-clearing triple. Wahoos now trail 6-4.
A single has made it 7-4.
