Edmonds was only 29. But still I can't image the mistake of passing up on Edmonds even tho the deal ran thru when Edmonds was 36-37 years old.
He started to decline after 2004.
But was amazing from 2000 to 2005.
It was worth it tho.

Edmonds was a STUD. Gold Glove center fielder with basically a low point of a .971 OPS to a high point 1.061 OPS. Where his XBH% went from 10% to 13%. That is the production I expected out of Votto.

Since July, 2012... Votto's XBH% has dropped to around 8%
So, while he is drawing a ton of walks..OBP going up. his slugging is dropping ... lower his OPS.
If Votto is the player that Edmonds was during those years.... That would be WELL-worth the 20 million.
If Votto is the player that Shin Soo Choo is now, and continues to regress, then the money was not well spent.

Reds would have LOVED to have 2014 and 2105 Choo.
2016-2020 Choo? Maybe not.

Interesting numbers...
Choo with a .427 OBP has scored 20 runs and driven in 11.
Hamilton with a .289 OBP has scored 18 runs and driven in 6.
Obviously this doesn't account for times on base where OBP isn't raised for either, such as pinch running or reaching on FC's, but I also think it's obvious that when Hamilton does reach base (albeit far more infrequently) he has a far greater impact and is far more likely to cross the plate than Choo does.
Billy is trending up. At least, when arguing Choo, quit looking at Billy as the comp. Look at the left fielders. Had they signed Choo that's where he'd be playing. Billy would still be in CF. I think they may have agreed with Don actually, when looking at Choo. They already had a very Choo like hitter in Votto. Down the road it would have meant having 40 million tied up in 2 late 30s guys with similar skill sets. They also had to keep payroll in line to be able to go after Bailey and down the line, Latos or Cueto.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

There surely was. The Reds FO decided to give that money to a career .500 pitcher instead.
Besides that I have read on here the Reds received 25 mil in additional yearly revenue starting this year from national tv.
I have also read on here the Reds expect to see their local tv money increase by 40-50 million per year in a couple years.
And of course reds revenue is increasing every year at this point outside of that.
The Reds could have easily signed Choo and Peralta.

No, there was literally no money. The amount given to Bailey wouldn't have covered Choo and if it did we'd still be out of a pitcher

Choo played himself out of Cincinnati, he was simply too good last year to resign.

Completely agree. The reds simply could not afford to give him a massive long contract. Too much risk in those later years.
