1998 - Last time Reds lost 8 or more

Eight or more in a row.....1998 was crazy...

Game 61 Reds beat Cleveland 2-1 promptly lose the next 5 games, then take 2 from Houston, wining 7-4 in game 68.

From game 69 to game 79 the Reds didn't win, they scored less than 3 runs in 8 of those games, 4 in another and 8 in another (in which they gave up 9) 3 of the losses came against the expansion Diamondbacks

In game 80 the Reds won 7-5 to break the streak.

They won their next 5 games, lost 2-1 to the Twins and then won 4 more games.

Then they traded their only AS representative Jeff Shaw, in the same season they traded their OD starter, the main player in each deal coming to the Reds played 1b.

The Reds then won their next 6 games in a row, making them 15-1 since the losing streak.

They then lost 8 in a row and 12 of the next 15.

I seem to remember the Reds having a revolving door at first base in 1998. They trade for Casey right before the season starts only to see him get hit in the face with a ball. Then it's Dmitri Young's time at first, followed by Casey when Casey returns. Then Shaw is traded for Konerko, who the Reds had no idea what to do with because they played him at first, third and the outfield.

Meanwhile the rotation was a mess, as it always was when Bowden led the charge. Fourteen different pitchers started games for the Reds, and it was also the year we were introduced to Jason Bere.

Funny that you have Seinfeld photo when we talk about 1998. Last year for the show. NO Kardashians to stink up the TV. No Reality TV shows besides Real World. Barely into my 30's. Oh the Reds is what we are talking about?

Chris Stynes and Jon Nunnally were going to lead that team with Eduardo Perez being a key piece. Right now this team could use a Stynes and Nunnally to come up from AAA and hit like that.

I was at Game 80, a 7-5 win at New Comiskey Park (now US Cellular Field) in Chicago vs. the White Sox. It was my first Reds game since 1991.

So a 90+ win team that loses a 1 game playoff spot is up for 2016?

Swept by an expansion team. Four runs in three games. Thirteen losses in 16 games. A season-high 13 games under .500 and 14 games out of first.

For those of you who hadn't figured it out yet, the Reds have officially entered oblivion.

Much of this season had already been downright pathetic, but the 1998 Reds reached a new low Thursday, losing 4-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks to give the expansionists a three-game sweep -- the first in Arizona's history.

And after the humiliating defeat -- in which the Reds continued to fail at the plate and made yet another error in the field, their 71st in 73 games -- manager Jack McKeon hinted that wholesale personnel changes may be in store.

McKeon doesn't handle those decisions -- that's up to General Manager Jim Bowden, who is so disgusted by this team that he went to watch Indianapolis for a few days to evaluate players there -- but if the manager had his way, he'd be working with new players as soon as possible.

"They've all had their chances. The only other alternative is to change the personnel," McKeon said. "We've got a bunch of guys not doing the job."

1998 - Last time Reds lost 8 or more

The Reds may be in the middle of a fire sale, but they are also on fire. They beat the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, 5-4, for their third straight win and eighth in nine games. The Reds won it when Bret Boone lined a ball up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out to score Barry Larkin.

It was not scored a hit on a technicality -- Willie Greene didn't run to second, so it was a fielder's choice -- but it was as good a grand slam.

"A great win," Reds manager Jack McKeon said. "The bullpen was great. Everybody contributed."

As his team wins, however, McKeon's popularity is dropping among some fans.

He chose to walk St. Louis' Mark McGwire, the major leagues' leading home-run leader, with two outs and the bases empty in the ninth.

"How about that?" McKeon said. "They said I wouldn't do it. There are only two guys in the league I'd do that with. Barry Bonds and him. Bonds more so than McGwire because Bonds can steal a base."

Meanwhile, I met a crazy red head with a bunch of tattoos and almost married her, which almost ruined my life.

But 1999 was a GREAT year.

Interestingly enough, the game we won, WIllie Greene went 3-3 with 4 RBI's after PH for Stan Belinda in the 5th inning. Greene replaced Konerko in LF.

1998 was also the comeback year for Pete Harnisch.
