Swept by an expansion team. Four runs in three games. Thirteen losses in 16 games. A season-high 13 games under .500 and 14 games out of first.
For those of you who hadn't figured it out yet, the Reds have officially entered oblivion.
Much of this season had already been downright pathetic, but the 1998 Reds reached a new low Thursday, losing 4-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks to give the expansionists a three-game sweep -- the first in Arizona's history.
And after the humiliating defeat -- in which the Reds continued to fail at the plate and made yet another error in the field, their 71st in 73 games -- manager Jack McKeon hinted that wholesale personnel changes may be in store.
McKeon doesn't handle those decisions -- that's up to General Manager Jim Bowden, who is so disgusted by this team that he went to watch Indianapolis for a few days to evaluate players there -- but if the manager had his way, he'd be working with new players as soon as possible.
"They've all had their chances. The only other alternative is to change the personnel," McKeon said. "We've got a bunch of guys not doing the job."
