    6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

    How they doing:

    Louisville 28-51
    Chattanooga 39-38
    Daytona 40-35
    Daytona 30-47
    Billings 3-10
    Greeneville 5-4
    AZL Reds 3-6
    DSL Reds 15-8

    Total 163-199

The teams are playing at a collective .450 rate. In a 162-game season that would translate to 73 wins.

The Red are playing at a .462 rate. In a 162-game season that would translate to 75 wins.

    Sounds about right.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

Louisville just tasted defeat for the 8th straight time. I've read that it's an acquired tasted. In an attempt to break that losing streak, the team has changed its name. This weekend they will be the Murcielagos de Louisville. They could use a little Murci. It just might work. And remember, Es divertido ser un fan.

Keury Mella will be playing the role of streak-stopper. His numbers from June might give one pause. 18.2 IP, 26 H, 12 BB, 9 K.

Eric Stout has given up 9 home runs in just 21.2 innings. Ouch!

Still no Lucas Sims' sightings. He has not made an appearance since June 20.

Will the real Brian O'Grady please stand up. Please stand up. Please stand up. Brian O'Grady's season has been sucked into a black hole. April OPS - 1.078. May OPS - 1.082. June OPS - .583. His IsoP in May was a staggering .326. This month it's .86. That is positively Bruceian. Being Notorious is full-time job. You can't be taking months off.

There will be 10 different promotions going on tonight, too many to list. Looks like a party all weekend long.

Chattanooga may have caught whatever ails Louisville, dropping their 4th in a row. Their nose is still above water for the season at 39-38, but they need to get this turned around ASAP.

TBD gets the call. I believe it will be Johendi Jiminian. Jiminian threw well in his last start. Jiminian has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts.

Taylor Trammell was back in action last night, going 0 for 2 and drawing a walk. Trammell also stole a base (14). Maybe it's nothing, but Trammell was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 9th. The pitcher was righthanded.

Ibandel Isabel up his league-leading home run total to 19 last night. He has 4 more than the runner-up. I think Ibandel has perfected his launch angle.

Chattanooga is doing some hitting. They lead the league in runs scored with 354. They also lead the league in OPS at .733 (League average - .680). Of the 18 position player for the Lookouts this season, only 3 are under that league average OPS line - Courtney Hawkins, who has been released. Michael Beltre, who is seriously struggling this season. And Alberti Chavez, who is Alberti Chavez. The Team is also leading in OBP and SLG.

Daytona had a 3-game win streak snapped last night. They are still at .500 for the second half, just 2 games back of first.

Wendolyn Bautista will start (2.96). He is one of two 26-year-olds that the Tortugas have in the starting rotation, the other being Austin Orewiler. Bautista has also worked for Louisville and Chattanooga in 2019.

Lorenzo Cedrola ranks third in the league with 6 triples.
Jonathan India leads the squad with 24 extra-base hits.
The longest hitting streak by any Tortuga this season is 4 games.
Carlos Rivero is in his sixth season with the organization. His career OPS is .519. He has never ever OPS .600 at any of his stops, no matter how short. He played as recently as Wednesday night. I don't think he can hit.

There must be a bunch of lushes down there in Volusia County. Last night was Thirsty Thursday. Tonight it's Friday Night Happy Hour. Geez. But one get one free for an hour and a half. Fireworks after the game are mainly to wake up all the fans that have passed out.

Dayton has caught the bug as well, four straight losses. The last three losses have come at the hands of a West Michigan team that was playing .288 baseball coming into the series at 21-52. The Whitecaps have outscored the Dragons 24-5 so far in the series.

Ricky Salinas will halt this skid. That is a GUARANTEE! Salinas has a 1.29 ERA over 4 starts in the month of June. Salinas pitched for Rice University, and Rice is known for two things: major league pitchers and pudding.

Brian Rey, the club's leading hitter in 2019, has not played in the last two games. Rey hails from Deltona, Florida, which is just a stone's throw or two from Daytona. Deltona was a planned a community that started out as Deltona Lakes. Why they dropped the Lakes is a mystery to me. The planned community has grown to about 90,000. The most famous person to come out of Deltona is Paxton Lynch, which means Brian Rey is certainly in the top 5. Deltona has a lot of catching up to do.

Juan Martinez has made 24 errors in just 70 games. Manos de Piedras.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

The Mustangs have stumbled out of the gate with a 3-10. Billings has made the playoffs in 4 of the past 5 seasons, so I expect a turnaround.

Justin McGregor (8.18) will be making his third start of the year. It's not going so well for Justin - 19 hits allowed in 11 innings, with only 5 Ks. This is second year in the organization, but 2019 was not all that and a bag of chips either (7.23).

Reinforcements are on the way as Matt LLoyd and James Free were both assigned to Billings yesterday. LLoyd has already tied a record for having the most first names with 4. Matthew Stephen John LLoyd. Already in the record books. Nice. Lloyd played his college ball right up the road from Cincinnati in Bloomington, Indiana. He played in the outfield and also pitched a little. He made his pro debut last night at first. Of course. He went 1 for 4. Let's try James Free again. The first time I googled the name it pulled up a murderer. I don't think that's correct. Okay, this is better. James Free played college ball for Pacific. As a freshman he hit 14 homers and OPSd over 1.000. He did not do as well the next two seasons. He is a catcher/infielder. He is also a II, and not a Jr. James is a switch hitter, and this article seems to think fairly highly of his skills. They think he will end up behind the dish.

Zooperstars will rock Dehner Park tonight. This will never NOT be funny.

I was wondering why he was pulled. Surely they aren’t relegating him to a platoon guy this early. He had to been hurt again or something.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

Greeneville pitchers combined to paint a masterpiece last night in the team's 10-0 plucking of the Johnson City Rat Birds. Their final line was: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 12 K. According to Bill James' game score formula, that works out to a score of 95. It was combined, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. The sticks did their part as well scoring double-digit runs (10) on double-digit hits (14). Special mention goes to Allan Cerda who singled twice, homered twice, scored three runs, knocked in seven more, and stole a base. The plundering lifted Greeneville to 5-4, just a game out of first.

The starter for tonight is TBD, but whomever it might be will have a hard act to follow.

Cerda is one of the younger players on the team at 19, and his performance last night lifted his OPS to 1.134. Greeneville leads the league in doubles with 20, and in extra-base hits with 29.

There has not been a single intentional walk in the Appalachian League this season.

With Billings adding a catcher to their roster, Robert Boselli has been bumped over to Greeneville.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

AZL Reds lost last night as well, but it was no fault of the pitching staff, as they threw their best game of the season. They allowed only 3 runs on 5 hits. Kudos. The sticks did not hold up their end of the bargain. The team travels to Camelback Ranch tonight, located at the confluence of the Agua Fria River and New River. The White Sox and the Dodgers share this stadium. It is a sunken playing field to improve sightlines, laying 12 feet below grade. Heck, they only bury people 6 feet below grade. There is fish-stocked lake between the team's two training facilities. I know. Who cares? Let's move on.

The starter today is Jacques Pucheu. He was brilliant in his first start of the season - 3 hitless innings with 5 strikeouts. And disastrous in his second - 7 earned runs in 2/3s of an inning. Flip a coin. Pucheu cannot wait until the season over in order to take the last train to Clarksville to be back home. Pucheu is pronounced poo-choy. Here is how the name is written in Chinese: 皮舍 (pinyin: pí shě) A nice article on the young lefty. https://www.14news.com/2019/06/25/ot...igned-by-reds/

Chadwick Tromp is far and away the team's best hitter with a 1.244 OPS. I would have to think he will be saying his goodbyes shortly.
Everyone's favorite, Debby Santana, is hitting well: .360/.385/.480/.865.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

DSL Reds are taking it on the chin, 9-3 in the 7th inning.

The team fights back, and actually had the winning run at the plate in the 9th, but fall short 10-8.

Once again, everyone that toed the rubber gave up runs. That's not going to work.

Thomas Lora, the 17-year-old from the D.R., had a slow start to the season, going 4 - 22. Lately, he has picked it up, hitting in 8 of his last 9 games. Lora singled, doubled and homered (1) today.
Samuel Colmenarez reached base three times on a single and two walks. He also stole two bases (3/4).
    Darlin Guzman supplied a 3-run poke (3).
Daniel Vellojin also singled and walked twice. He stole a base (4).
Junior Melo walked and hit a solo home run (1) in the 9th.
Lenniell Perez had a perfect day with the bat. He singled, tripled, walked twice and lifted a sacrifice fly.

Looks like they're letting Dawkins manage a bit now. Tonight's lineup looks like one that's trying to win rather than get looks at prospects. Have a feeling most of Management was at the first five or six games for evaluation purposes.

    Bumpass is batting 3rd tonight.

    Re: 6/28/19 Hoppkorv...

Louisville is trailing 6-1 after 4. 5 unearned runs in the top of 4th.

Scott Schebler was in the leadoff slot and doubled in the first. He scored on a Josh VanMeter double. Schebler caught a ball for the third out in the second, and then was taken out of the game in the top of third.
Schebler came out. VanMeter went from second to first. Nick Longhi went from first to left. Brian O'Grady went from left to center. And Sherman Johnson took over at second.

A couple of familiar names in the Columbus lineup - Adam Rosales and Dioner Navarro.

No Johendi Jiminian tonight. Surprise! Ryan Lillie is back in action. The game is in the third and Chattanooga leads 3-1.

The game's big blow so far is a 2-run Gavin LaValley double.
