2014 Reds Fourth Round pick: Gavin LaValley

Post any info on Gavin LaValley in this thread,

    - - - Updated - - -

This in the draft thread from redteamgo.

    6'3" 235lbs DOB: 12/28/94 | Scouting video
LaValley has destroyed Oklahoma high school pitching the past three seasons while leading Carl Albert High to an unprecedented three straight 5-A state championships. He batted a combined .516/.618/1.126 with 54 homers and 202 RBIs in 121 games. He even pitched as a senior and threw a two-hit shutout in the state semifinals. Some veteran area scouts say that LaValley has the best bat speed they've ever seen. Combined with the strength in his 230-pound frame, it gives him considerable power to all fields. He has a sound right-handed swing, and the ball makes a different sound when it comes off his bat. Also a center in football, LaValley shed 30 pounds before his final baseball season. He runs well for his size and has some arm strength, though he likely will be limited to first base. The Oklahoma recruit draws physical comparisons to Billy Butler and Mark Trumbo, and he should be a better defender than either.

Slot value for the pick is $411,900. Not sure what it will take to buy him out of his Oklahoma commit, but the Reds should have cash available signing their 1st 4 picks to underslot deals.

He's slimmed down-- from 270 to 220 lbs.

What is the deal with his age? Will be 20 years old in december and just graduated from high school?

Yup, sounds like someone was held back a year. Maybe this makes it easier for the Reds to sign him away from OU.

Based on the scouting report seems like a guy who belonged higher on the draft lists. Seems very underrated.

Interesting up the middle/opposite field approach. Kid looks to have very good hitter's hands and strength. Intriguing.

    Notable Fourth-Round Picks

No. 125: Reds select Oklahoma HS 1B Gavin LaValley

It's not usually a good sign when a player is already listed as a first baseman in high school, but Gavin LaValley has the bat to handle the position. He's a monster at 6'3" and 235 pounds with some speed and athleticism.

LaValley generates big power with tremendous bat speed and a good bat path. His approach is still raw, as is the pitch recognition, but he's good at laying off balls in the dirt right now. There's enormous offensive potential at this spot.

The Reds also went off the BA 500 with first baseman Gavin LaValley, who hit 54 home runs while helping his high school team win three state championships. He’s physically dominated Oklahoma prep competition and has improved his body over the course of his high school career. An Oklahoma signee, the massive LaValley is listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds but scouts say he’s closer to 240, but he’s strong has plus raw power. He’s expected to have limited defensive value but should be athletic enough to stay at first base. Scouts that liked him saw some wrist snap and feel for hitting to go with the strength. He didn’t face a lot of velocity in high school en route to being Oklahoma’s Gatorade player of the year, hitting .554 with 18 home runs this spring.

I'd settle for him being something between Mantle and Bench...

Sweet. When Votto's contract is up, sweet Gavin will be 30. So, will this kid play 3B? Or LF?
