    Looking Ahead: 2015 Draft

12 names to watch one year in advance. As always, will be fun to revisit this list next June.

    SS Brendan Rogers HS
OF Daz Cameron (son of Mike) HS
    SS John Aiello HS
SS Nick Shumpert (son of Terry) HS
    SS/3B Jahmai Jones HS

    SS CJ Hinojosa Texas
    SS/2B Alex Bregman LSU
    2B/OF Ian Happ UC
    OF Skye Bolt UNC
    LHP Cole Irvin Oregon
    RHP Kyle Funkhouser Louisville
    RHP Riley Ferrell TCU

and of course don't forget about Famous Jameis Winston, who will likely be a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.

Personally, I'd love for the Reds to get their hands on Rogers or Cameron.
    Go BLUE!!!

With the 2014 First-Year Player Draft now officially in the books, it's time to get started on 2015.

    No, seriously.

Almost immediately after this year's Draft concludes, work on next year's commences. The summer schedule is jam-packed with summer leagues, showcases and All-American games.
A look at a very busy few months for scouts:

June 11: Cape Cod League begins

June 12-16: Perfect Game National Showcase, Fort Myers, Fla.

June 16-22: USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, Cary, N.C.

July 19-28: USA Baseball Breakthrough Series, Cary/Durham, N.C.

July 27: Cape Cod League All-Star Game, South Yarmouth, Mass.

July 30-Aug. 2: East Coast Professional Showcase, Syracuse, N.Y.

Aug. 4-9: Area Code Games, Long Beach, Calif.

Aug. 10: Perfect Game All-American Classic, San Diego

Aug. 16: Under Armour All-America Game, Chicago

Things will undoubtedly change several times as the summer wears on and, of course, between now and next spring. But here's a quick look at the top high school and college prospects who could end up being top of the first round type talents in 2015.

2014 was a weak draft class for SS's. Why reach for a SS this year when the quality isn't that solid? Why draft a SS if you don't think he could make it? Just for the sake of saying you drafted a SS? That doesn't help the system. The Reds will be drafting a SS next year-- hopefully in the 1st or 2nd round.

Agreed. If the Reds get a college SS as opposed for reaching this year for a HS SS, he'd still be ahead as far as where in the system he'd be.

I want Skye Bolt and Funkhouser, just because those are cool names.

If Skye Bolt makes it to the majors he'll be a marketing dream. If he becomes an All Star level player he'll make a fortune just on endorsements. The name sounds like a Marvel super hero.

Top 11 Picks Will Be Protected In 2015 Draft

By Steve Adams [July 21, 2014 at 1:50pm CDT]

The Astros’ failure to sign Brady Aiken resulted in the team receiving a compensation pick (No. 2 overall) in the 2015 draft, and while we’ve seen problems caused by comp picks in the Top 10 under the new CBA (specifically heading into the 2013 season), MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes reports that a change has been made to the protected pick structuring (Twitter links). Previously, the CBA had called for the “Top 10″ picks to be protected, but changes have been made that will protect the picks of the teams with the 10 worst records, regardless of whether or not comp picks are inserted into the first 10 selections.

Major League Baseball's version of the Draft lottery doesn't attract nearly as much attention as its NBA and NHL counterparts, mostly because baseball's top picks aren't determined randomly like they are in the other sports. But for 12 big league clubs, the Competitive Balance Lottery on Wednesday will provide them with a valuable extra selection in 2015.

This year, the Athletics, Brewers, Cardinals, D-backs, Indians, Marlins, Orioles, Padres, Pirates, Rays, Reds, Rockies and Royals have a shot at the supplemental first-round picks. Whichever teams from that group don't get one of those will be eligible for the supplemental second-rounders, as will the Mariners and Twins. The lottery will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, at the Commissioner's Office in New York.
Hopefully the Reds will get one this year, I felt they were shafted this past draft.

If the argument is the draft lottery makes the NBA and NHL drafts (the NHL has a draft???) more popular, then I don't know what to say. Just keep this guy away from the MLB commissioner's office, please. Draft lotteries are a vagary on sports. It literally repels me from the NBA.

I don't know how the NHL draft works, but the baseball draft lottery and the NBA draft lottery are far, far different things. In the NBA it determines the picks from #1-13 and that is dumb. In baseball, it just gives you an extra pick in between the first and second rounds.

    Re: Looking Ahead: 2015 Draft

Reds got the first pick in the Competitive Balance Lottery B - ie the Reds will have the first selection after the second round takes place, I believe.

Would've been nice to get the A round, but it's better than nothing.

    2015 Competitive Balance Lottery Results

By Steve Adams [July 23, 2014 at 2:06pm CDT]

The Competitive Balance Lottery for the 2015 MLB Draft took place this afternoon. Twelve competitive balance picks are awarded, with the first six taking place after the first round’s conclusion and the next six taking place following conclusion of the second round. Here are the results, per MLB.com (Twitter links)…

    Competitive Balance Round A

    Marlins
    Rockies
    Cardinals
    Brewers
    Padres
    Indians

    Competitive Balance Round B

    Reds
    Athletics
    Mariners
    Twins
    Orioles
    Diamondbacks

As MLB.com’s Jim Callis explained earlier in the week, teams that have one of the 10 smallest markets or one of the 10 smallest revenue pools are eligible to receive a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds (Round A) or between the second and third rounds (Round B).

The A’s, Diamondbacks, Indians, Marlins, Orioles, Padres, Pirates, Rays, Reds, Rockies and Royals were eligible for Comp Round A picks. The teams that didn’t receive an extra pick from that pool were placed into a second pool that also included the Mariners and Twins to determine which would receive a Comp Round B selection. These picks are eligible to be traded any time during the regular season, right up until 5pm ET on the day of next year’s draft.

It's nice that MLB is leveling the playing field for the lowly St. Louis Cardinals.
