Ryan Ludwick let J.J. Hoover keep the bat he held for his 9th inning walk. Hoover said it was his 1st time on base since high school #Reds

    Mesoraco, Concerning rule 7.3

"You want to know what the rule is, you want to expect, you want to know what you can and can't know, and at this point, I don't think any of the catchers know," Mesoraco said.
Mesoraco was asked if he'd have done anything differently than Russell.
"Probably not, no," Mesoraco said. "He has to try to catch the ball and keep his foot on the base. It's a force play -- I don't know. I don't think that's the intention of the rule. A force play like that and he's blocking... I wouldn't have done anything different myself."

Totally agree with you. The umpires and NYC may have interpreted the rule correctly but its a bad rule. MLB had better go back to the way things were before or they are going to be severly embarrassed in the playoffs or World Series over something similar to this play. IMO, just a very bad decision to change this back in the spring.
