Stephenson has been one hell of a disappointment this season. Love having him in the organization, but he needs to seriously step his game up.

If you will indulge me to break from the norm here for a moment, here is a very fascinating interview with Jesse Winker from Doug's site.

The interview was done with Winker by one of Doug's regular readers, during the Blue Wahoos trip through Tennessee.

This whole thing where you are describing players as disappointments based on OPS (see: Ervin) or ERA (see: Lively, Stephenson) or whatever is pretty played out. Stephenson is one of the youngest players in AA and has the best K/9 in the Southern league. Nothing about his prospect status has been affected this year; in fact, his "stuff" has probably been confirmed in the eyes of scouts rather than doubted since he's making a full season stop in AA.

If you want to criticize a player, you really need some sort of criteria. What would Stephenson have to do to have you not qualify "Love having him in the organization" with a stab at his play? Would his ERA, which is meaningless in the minors, have to be lower? Would he have to strike out 10/9 instead of 9.3? Would he have to walk less people? Or do you agree that a lot of this could have a lot of meanings and that you just want a guy who plays in Pensacola to dominate every time out, which is completely unrealistic- especially given the context of the player?

Is Noah Syndergaard a bad prospect because his ERA at AAA is 5.70? Does Jon Gray need to "seriously step his game up" because he has a dip in strikeouts this year? What about Mark Appel and his ERA of 9.55 this year?

Everything in baseball needs context- ESPECIALLY minor league players' production. You are looking at raw numbers and haven't provided anything beyond season OPS and ERA numbers in any discussion about these prospects. These young men deserve better than the reckless criticism that has no foundation and belongs on the "banana phone." Furthermore, the board deserves better than reckless criticism that has no foundation and arises time and again.

    Back up your statements.

I don't like Chuckie's sniping posts either, but I truly think we need to be focusing on Stephenson's BB/9. Doug has an oft-repeated narrative about if you take away 3 of his starts his walk rate is ok, but I don't buy that. (Had to be pre-emptive there, sorry Doug). He is young. This can be overcome. But that needs to be a major focus of Robert's right now.
