Possible LF/1B combo targets for rest of 2014

I have no idea how Votto is doing - but he appears to be, at best, needing chunks of time off from here to the end of the season. At worst, who knows, maybe he isn't able to play much at all. Regardless, it would clearly appear this team could use a person capable of filling in at 1b when needed, and, in my view, could also use someone who can man LF several times a week, when not at 1b, pushing Ludwick and Schu to clearly bench roles (and strengthening the bench at the same time).

That said, this appears to be such a natural area of need that perhaps we can centralize the discussion that is taking place in several threads about possible targets. And, maybe, fingers crossed, there might start to be trade rumors at some point.

Fwiw, the players I am putting here have been mentioned elsewhere and appear to have somewhat manageable contract situations. For example, while I mentioned Swisher at one point, I went and looked up his contract, and there is no way the Reds are doing that. That said, how about we come up with a list of names and keep an eye out for trade rumors etc over the next few weeks?

The start of the list:

OF/1b types:

1. Ben Zobrist (I've made my feelings clear)
2. Lucas Duda (great suggestion from Dan in another thread)
3. Scott Van Slyke (mentioned elsewhere, he's got some 1b big league experience)
4. Luis Valbuena (way more IF than OF, but a little OF experience)

1b types (depends on how Votto is...IF he is done, then...):

1. Casey McGahee
2. Justin Morneau (my thought)

Others?

I am trying to keep this somewhat realistic in terms of who might be available and that might have a price the reds could pay in prospects and salary.

PS: This thread is for guarded optimism, that this team can make a run this year - and that said acquisition would help such a run possibly happen.

Willingham! Yeah, looked him up yesterday, and forgot I had. Most def would be a nice target. Didn't realize that Rios's contract was finally up after this year, yeah, he would fit the bill in terms of OF, can he play 1b? Maybe doesn't matter if Bruce can, I suppose. You say Byrd and I hear the music from Platoon as I think back on the end of last year... Nice thought on Viciedo, he was off my radar, but is still young at 25 and has some 1b experience in the bigs to go with the OF stuff.

Adam Dunn, seriously.

Updated list after first few suggestions (not necessarily in order of desireability):

OF/1b types:

1. Ben Zobrist (I've made my feelings clear)
2. Lucas Duda (great suggestion from Dan in another thread)
3. Scott Van Slyke (mentioned elsewhere, he's got some 1b big league experience)
4. Luis Valbuena (way more IF than OF, but a little OF experience)
5. Josh Willingham
6. Alex Rios
7. Marlon Byrd
8. Dylan Viciedo
9. Adam Dunn

1b types (depends on how Votto is...IF he is done, then...):

1. Casey McGahee
2. Justin Morneau (my thought)

Dan Uggla has never played 1B, at least at the major league level, but I bet he could, and Atlanta would probably pay part of his salary to be rid of his contract. I wouldn't mind giving him a tryout to see if a change of scenery might re-light the old spark...

Has he ever done the OF thing?

- - - Updated - - -

OF/1b types (not in order of desirability, just a list of possible/realistic targets):

5. Josh Willingham (only a few games at 1b in his career)
6. Dylan Viciedo (young, upside - not much 1b experience)
7. Adam Dunn (I think he could still cover LF if he had to, ymmv)
8. Garrett Jones (great thought from above - nice target)

OF types (no 1b experience):

1. Alex Rios
2. Marlon Byrd

1b types (depends on how Votto is...IF he is done, then...):

1. Casey McGahee
2. Justin Morneau (my thought)
3. James Loney (only OF was back in '06, he's prob a 1b only option)

Morneau would be good.

By the way, once we have a good working list...I am going to do a poll where we rank the targets (maybe another thread?) and then we can all discuss same, maybe?

Adam Dunn.

This is a no brainer to me. He could be had for a bucket of balls.

Reds not acting with A's like urgency- not that there is much available.
On filling 1B void via trade, Price said: "We'll see how things unfold in the next couple weeks. It's a talking point". #Reds
Jeff Wallner ‏@JeffWallner 15m
Price said Neftali Soto is an option at Triple-A. "That would be a consideration". Soto is batting .336 at Louisville. #Reds
Jeff Wallner @JeffWallner 18m
Price on Donald Lutz, who's batting .220 at LOU: "He needs to do more at Triple-A. If he was knocking the cover off the ball .... ". #Reds

Jeff Wallner @JeffWallner 20m
First base will rotate between Brayan Pena, Todd Frazier, and Jay Bruce. #Reds

Price on Votto: "Not a 10 to15-day issue. The goal is to get him back to where he can help us this year". #Reds

Big Donkey would have fit right in at the end of last season, so why not now? Lots of young guys like Hamilton could learn a lot from Adam Dunn. They could have a laziness competition in Dunner's old recliner.

"C'mon Billy, more batting practice, really? Dude, you totally reek of effort." -Adam Dunn

Dunn would certainly improve the Reds' golf handicap and could offer quite a few pointers there as well.

Sounds like win/win to me.

"And why do false truths persist, getting passed down the decades as if they were fact? It comes back to the same point: People believe things that are wrong because, individually, people rarely investigate their own beliefs, particularly when what they believe makes sense intuitively. Even more so when those around them agree with them." -K.F.
