    Rusney Castillo

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/inter...howcase-miami/

The top Cuban free agent on the market will be available for all 30 teams to see by the end of the month.

Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, who is currently in Florida, will hold an open showcase for teams on July 26 at the University of Miami. Castillo, who is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports, is a free agent and is expected to sign fairly soon after his showcase, making him a potential impact player down the stretch if he signs with a contending club.
sources say he appears to have added about 20 pounds and is now around 5-foot-9, 205 pounds. Castillo is an excellent athlete, a plus-plus runner and was one of the better basestealers in Cuba, with a line-drive stroke from the right side and surprising power for his size. Some scouts see Castillo as an everyday center fielder, though others view him as a fourth outfielder

Puig, Abreu, and Cespedes are going to help make this young man a ton of jack. Add in the fact that teams are paying more for hitting than ever before and it's going to be a high cost to get him.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

It will be interesting to see where he lands on the pay scale.

If a couple of teams, maybe even one, believes he is a close to ready starting OF, then he will likely come in anywhere between 25-50+ million dollars.(the wide variance depending on contract length)

However, if his perceived value is inflated, and more teams view him in that 4th OF mold, then his contract would likely be under 20 million. So I will be watching to see where he comes out, and if the Reds are in on him, as they have been with several other Cuban defectors.

He's not going to be a plus-plus runner for long if he's carrying 205 pounds on a 5'9" frame.

Wow if only the Reds could get their hands on a potential 4th outfielder from Cuba like a Rusney Castillo or a Felix Perez.

    Re: Rusney Castillo

slightly off topic, but I had a thought.

Felix Perez is really hitting, but he hasn't gotten a sniff of a hint of a rumor of being called up. You'd THINK his two fellow countrymen would be lobbying for him considering both played with him for at least a little while in Louisville.

Maybe they don't like him? Just speculation, but I cannot fathom why an .830 OPS bat has not been even rumored to be called up.

EDIT: I see now Pena has not played with him, but Chapman has.

I'd guess Chapman does not say too much about personnel moves. Personality, language barrier, whatever. Just doesn't seem like "that type".

12:46pm: Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo‘s showcase for Major League teams is tomorrow, but MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez adds an interesting twist to the audition: the speedster will work out at both center field and at shortstop (Twitter link).

n general, though, Castillo looked fast. But how fast is open to interpretation, too, and we’ll have more on that later.

Castillo took fly balls in right and center, although scouts indicated his arm plays more to center or even left. (Castillo said his preferred position is center.) He also took ground balls at shortstop, although no one really expects him to play there.

Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising aspect of Castillo’s game was the power he showed and the ability to hit to the opposite field with authority.

Again, though, he wasn’t facing David Price.

With all that as a prelude, here are more details on what was, ultimately, Castillo’s attempt to earn a big-money MLB contract:

Agent Brodie Van Wagenen said that he believes “a lot of teams may view [Castillo] as a trade-deadline-type acquisition, and that he could be playing in a pennant race in September.”

Given the 27-year-old’s wide potential market, and the fact that he might be a contributor for a contender, the bidding will be fascinating to watch. One scout tells Martino that he thinks Castillo will land between $25MM and $35MM, while another said that he could reach Yasiel Puig territory ($42MM), even if he is not viewed as that level of talent.

Go get Castillo. Passed on Cespedes, Puig and Abreu, time to get a hitter. Call up Felix Perez and sign Castillo.
