As shifts suppress offense, time has come to consider a rule change?

    http://www.si.com/mlb/2014/07/22/shi...-david-ortiz//

I recently asked a veteran major league hitting coach what can be done to inject more offense back in the game. His first response was to address the new defensive positioning.

“The shifts,” he said. “Get rid of them. You need to come up with a definition of illegal defense. I know you’ll say, ‘Well, you’re a hitting coach. Of course you would [say that].’ But it’s something that has really changed the game.”

Support of an “illegal defense” rule – or at least the consideration of it – is gaining some traction in baseball. Such a rule might stipulate, for instance, that you cannot have three infielders on one side of second base. A shortstop would be able to shift as far as directly behind second base on a lefthanded hitter, but no farther.
Just say no to "illegal defense" in baseball.

I don´t like it. let the defence decide how they want to position themself...

Don't like where the defenders are? Then don't hit the ball there.

The game will always change, ebb and flow, defense is affecting power, that coupled with K's demands a batter reaction. Rules don't need to be applied to change the game in this instance, approach is the key. Look for a decrease in slugging and an increase in BA as a result.

Is there evidence that shifts have suppressed offense?

They panicked in 1963 after the 1961-62 offensive/HR explosions in both leagues with expansions coming in.

The panic of 1963 led to the pitching hysteria of 1967-68 and more rule changes after that....and expansion in 1969 and 1977.

Expansion seems to be what makes offenses shoot up more than most rule changes. Even after the DH, offenses did not go up in the Al until the 1977 expansion in that league only.

I think that's an excellent idea. Illegal defense is a concept in almost every sport, so this wouldn't bother me at all.

No way would I support limiting defensive shifts in baseball. Let batters make the adjustments. It is not like it is impossible for a batter to hit away from the shift.

When I played 95% of the balls I hit landed within 50 feet of the RF/1B line. The only balls I ever hit on the left side of the field were when I was so far out in front that I hit them off the end of the bat. And I think outlawing the shift is the dumbest, sissiest idea I've ever heard.

Very glad to see Redszone overwhelmingly against this terrible idea. I love the fact that guys who hit to all fields are rewarded and big donkeys who pull everything they hit on the ground get punished.

Expand the league by 2 teams and put the DH in the NL, that will help the offense.
