Reds History: Undisputed and Important facts every Reds fan should know

Another thread got me thinking, this would be a fun excercise.

    I'll start

    1) The 1990 Reds went Wire to Wire, remaining in first place every day of the season and then went on to win the World Series, with a sweep of the Oakland A's

Attended 1976 World Series in my Mother's Womb. Attended 1990 World Series Game 2 as a 13 year old. Want to take my son to a a World Series Game in Cincinnati in my lifetime.

The Reds Radio Network was founded in 1948 and has gone exactly 1 year without Waite Hoyt, Marty Brenneman, or Joe Nuxhall announcing.

Reds are currently on a 9 world series game winning streak.

7 Reds and Stan Musial were the fan voted all stars in 1957.

The 1976 Reds did not lose a game in the post season. The swept the Phillies in the NLCS, then swept the Yankees in the World Series.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

    Really little known fact:
There was a game 7 played even after Fisk's homer won the Series for the Red Sox.

The first televised baseball game was between the Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers in Brooklyn on August 26, 1939.

In 1981 the Reds had the best record in baseball and did not make the playoffs.

Fred Hutchinson was the manager for the Reds from 1961-1964; it is his #1 which is retired.

Hutch was diagnosed with terminal cancer prior to the 1964 season, the team played all year with the knowledge that their manager was dying. Hutch managed until about mid-August, right about the time the Reds caught fire and nearly caught the collapsing Phillies. The Reds would finish 2nd to the Cardinals that year, and Hutch would pass away in November.

"Who the f*** is Chico Ruiz?" was screamed by Phil's manager Gene Mauch after Ruiz almost mistakenly stole home to win a game down the stretch for the Reds. "Chico f'ing Ruiz, Chico F'ing Ruiz, you let Chico f'ing Ruiz beat you!"

This predates the Bucky Dent home run and his new moniker in New England, by a number of years, no matter what any Red Sox fan tells you.

Why don't the 1990 Reds ever get more credit when I hear about the great upsets of all time? Those A's were absolutely dominant during the regular season and we crushed them.

John T Brush is the only person to own the Reds that was not a Cincinnati resident.

Central Trust Bank seized the Reds from owner Sidney Weil in the early 30's

The Reds were the 1st MLB team to fly to a game in 1935

    Piggybacking...

In 1994, the Reds had the best record in the NL Central (the first season the division existed) ... and did not make the playoffs.

I wouldn't exactly call that one undisputed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1957_Ma..._All-Star_Game

When fan voting to determine the game's starters was completed, seven Cincinnati Redlegs players (Ed Bailey, Johnny Temple, Roy McMillan, Don Hoak, Frank Robinson, Gus Bell and Wally Post) had been elected to start in the All-Star Game; the only non-Redleg elected to start for the National League was St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Stan Musial. Most baseball observers agreed that while the Redlegs were known to be a great offensive team with many outstanding position players, they did not deserve seven starters in the All-Star Game.

An investigation launched by Commissioner Ford Frick found that over half of the ballots cast came from Cincinnati, with the Cincinnati Enquirer printing up pre-marked ballots and distributing them with the Sunday edition of the newspaper to make it easy for Redlegs fans to vote often for their favorite players, while stories emerged of bars in Cincinnati refusing to serve alcohol to customers until they filled out a ballot.
How do we know he's not Mel Torme?

Reds Manager Birdie Tebbets felt that George Crowe (who had only 703 MLB ab’s prior to 1957) should be made honorary member of the team. He was replaced by Stan Musial and Gus Bell and Wally Post were replaced by Willie Mays and Henry Aaron. The five Reds starters were as follows.

    Don Hoak - 3rd Base
    Roy McMillan - SS
    Johnny Temple - 2nd Base
    Ed Bailey - C
    Frank Robinson - LF

In the final tally Musial did indeed beat out Crowe, however the late votes (550K) from Cincinnati were enough for the commissioner to take the vote away from the fans again and they wouldn’t get it back until 1970, which oddly enough was the year the game was played in Cincinnati at the new Riverfront Stadium.

In 1999, the Reds won 4 more games against the NL than any other team in their division but missed the playoffs because of the interleague records.
