That's the way it is in the real world, good professionals don't let one affect the other. I don't see why being a professional athlete is any different."
How is that "obviously" talking about degrees? "good professionals don't let one affect the other" is not the same thing as saying "good professionals limit how much outside issues affect their work".
Agree to disagree. You may THINK it doesn't effect "good professionals", but unless they're cold hearted bastards....it DOES affect them. Some more than others, but that should be obvious as every person is different. Also, don't forget, Bruce isn't far away from still being a kid.

I find it interesting that some of the people who are arguing strongly that personal issues and stress affect performance are the same people who will argue until their fingers bleed that there is no such thing as clutch.

Its exactly the same thing!
I think you need to be less literal my friend. i suspect the reasonable man could imply that I was advocating having a good breakfast, taking reasonable vacation time, and try to avoid arguments with the wife before you go in to perform oral surgery on someone.
Mutaman, I just cannot see the parallel between legal practice and batting in the major leagues.
The biggest difference is margin for error. I do not know if you have spent much time reviewing your record of trials, but I have never worded things perfectly; not once in years as a prosecutor or senior prosecutor. In fact, I have made just almost every mistake in the book at some point in the courtroom. From calling the witness by the wrong name, to mistakenly switching out the victim's and the accused name's in argument, I have certainly done my fair share of boners in the court room. However, unlike Bruce swinging at a curve, I can adjust and fix the mistake before it has any effect on the ultimate result.
When I am sick, tired or distracted, I do not perform as well as I normally do in the courtroom, but I do not believe this ever affected the result. Heck the only contested trial I ever lost was one where I felt I was on the top of my game!).
Like in most professions, our performance is not so finite as hitting a major league fastball. If the mechanic installs the distributor wrong, most times the client will never be aware of it because the mechanic will find and fix the mistake well before turning the car back over to the customer. When I have said the exact wrong thing in front of a judge, I was able to immediately correct my error.
I cannot speak intelligently about surgery, but I can say with certainly and some level of expertise that the demands of baseball are dramatically different than the demands of law. When I have been sick or tired or distracted, I have simply slowed down my pace in the trial to give myself more time.
I have never come across a court decision that required split second action on my part that would determine the final result of the case. Even on objections, if I am not sure if I can or want to object to something, I just say "Objection" and then give myself a moment to collect and analyze my thoughts and then simply withdraw the objection if I decide I cannot or should not object. Before I make the truly big decisions, such as resting my case, I can even ask for a minute or two or even a recess.
By contrast, Bruce does not get to hit pause or to go back and say 'Your honor, I actually wanted to swing at that pitch, so can we re-do it?"

Just curious, but have you had a close relative go through something like terminal cancer and the chemo that goes with it? Or advanced alzheimers? Something that weighs heavily on the rest of the family to help deal with the issue at hand? If not, it may be why you seem to be looking at it from this perspective.
Don't bother, Mutaman. I say stuff out of my butt here all the time and these dummies always try to dissect it and make sense of it like I was on a grand jury or something. They get too caught up in the actual words and stuff instead of just talking out of their butt back and busting chops like one of the guys.
