Five years ago (2009), a 2-1 win in 10 innings at Great American Ball Park vs. the Giants.

    Eugenio Velez 2b
    Juan Uribe ss
    Nate Schierholtz rf
    Pablo Sandoval 3b

    Aaron Harang p

    WP: Francisco Cordero (2-3)
    LP: Bob Howry (1-6)
HR: CIN - Laynce Nix (10), Drew Stubbs (1).

Reds CF Drew Stubbs hit his first major-league home run in this game, a towering shot high off the left-field foul pole to win the game in the bottom of the tenth inning. Brandon Phillips left the game in the third inning with a hand injury. Drew Sutton pinch-hit for Phillips, and remainied in the game at 2B. I was at this game. I won Skyline cheese coneys for my entire row by winning the "shell game" on the scoreboard.

Was Chuck Taylor a shoe salesman in the off season?

Dutch Ruether pitched a complete-game six-hitter to get the win for the Reds. Yes, that is THE Jim Thorpe in CF for the Braves, perhaps the most famous athlete in the world at the time.
I think Jim Thorpe has to be the name of the day. Thorpe is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. He won the Decathalon and Pentathalon in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. The King of Sweden pronounced him the greatest athlete in the world. He was voted the greatest athlete of the first 50 years of the 20th century by the AP in 1953. In 1977, he was also named the greatest American football player of all time. Those medals he won in the 1912 Olympics were taken away when it was found out he had played minor league baseball for pay. They were reinstated later on but not until after his death. Thorpe did play major league baseball from 1913 to 1919. He didn't play this sport as well as others. The curve ball, by his own admission, did him in. He played in only 298 games and hit just .252. He did play for a short time with the Reds in 1917. He was loaned to them as a favor to Reds manager Christy Mathewson. Thorpe was a Native American Indian who grew up on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma. He was the grandson of the famous Chippewa warrior,Black Hawk. Thorpe fought alcoholism most of his life and died, probably penniless, at age 65. His death certificate listed his occupation as simply "Athlete".
