    Latos to Cubs?

John Erardi kinda put it out there today on the Eddie & Tracy show today on WLW. He said the Cubs are wanting Latos very badly and Reds fans should not be surprised if a Latos for Castro deal or Latos for Addison Russell deal went down. He didn't put a time frame on it. Between the trade deadline "dangling" and the revocable waiver placed on him today, sounds like Latos might be the man headed elsewhere for 2015.
As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

I think that's the first Reds trade rumor I've read in almost two years.

Trading him for Castro would be a huge mistake. He's not very good and has a big contract.

    Now Russell makes some sense.

Latos for Russell would amount to the Cubs swapping Samarjiza for Latos. (B prospects aside)

    Re: Latos to Cubs?

I'd make the deal for either Castro or Russell, with throw-ins as needed. Castro's contract starts at $6 million next year and gradually increases to $11 million in five years. He's hitting .764 OPS this year, after a terrible 2013. He would be an immediate, circa, 200 point upgrade in OPS. He's one of the few shortstops who can hit and he's done ok defensively this season. Castro was an all star multiple times, he's still only 24 years old.

If it's Russell, I'd just as soon the Reds make the deal now and get Russell to the majors immediately. He's having no problem hitting at AA. Let him start working his way in.

Having watched the no-hit Reds for five months now, forgive me if I'm happy to hear rumors of adding players who can upgrade the offense.

I think there's still a lot of high-end potential in Castro. I'm intrigued. Not completely sold, but intrigued.

It makes sense on paper but ehhhhhhh, I really don't want to trade him to the Cubs.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    Zack Cozart 2014 WAR: 2.7
    Starlin Castro 2014 WAR: 1.7
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

I like the idea of trading Latos for some bats, Castro is not one of those bats.

Maybe the best example ever of WAR being completely unreliable.

I don't understand why everyone is jonesing to trade Latos. I want him to be a centerpiece of the rotation for the next several years.

Or an example of how important defense is for a shortstop.

Fangraphs WAR has Castro at 2.5 and Cozart at 1.5.

Count me in with the crowd who doesn't want Castro.

But if Russell is in play, then I'm all ears.

Free agency coming up. Can't sign everybody to $100 million contract.
