Bowden's interesting. A hot commodity a few years ago now considered an also-ran, but I think he may still have some untapped potential.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Bowden is interesting. Mijares could be useful, too.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Yep. The Reds are accumulating quite a decent number of potential "surprise" bullpen pieces. Also like Adcock, De La Torre, Cisneros and Magill as options. If the Reds need to deal say a Lecure and a Contreras or something along those lines for other help, I think they have plenty of options for the 11th and 12th man.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Problem is relievers 2-5. Many candidates for relievers 6-7.

the Reds don't have the cash to spend $6M+ on 7th/8th inning relievers. We tried that and it ate up the budget. so the team is going to have to develop these guys in house & until we do we'll have to do the old dumpster dive.

Reds signed C Kyle Skipworth to a minor league contract.
The 24-year-old backstop spent most of the 2014 campaign at Triple-A New Orleans where he slashed an unimpressive .216/.292/.407 with 10 homers and 30 RBI in 70 games. He's nothing more than organizational catching depth for the Reds.

Teams get set up men for less cash than that.

But the need to produce good relievers from the farm should not be news to these people.

If I were Bob and Walt I would be furious that I have to strain the payroll for new players, when so few are being produced from the farm.

Don't know what they can or can't afford, but I do agree that bullpen arms have recently become very expensive. I am less worried about the Reds producing relievers beyond 2015. Some of the many starting pitcher candidates that fail to develop secondary pitches are likely to end up in the pen.

Free agent righty Donovan Hand tweets that he has agreed to a deal with the Reds. The deal would presumably be of the minor league variety. Hand, 28, spent his eighth season in the Brewers organization in 2014 as a swingman for Triple-A Nashville, posting a 5.20 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9. Hand had the same role in the big leagues in 2013, posting a 3.69 ERA and 2.8 BB/9 in 68 1/3 innings but with just 4.9 K/9.

    From baseball America:

    Cincinnati Reds
Signed: RHP Donovan Hand, 2B Hernan Iribarren (re-signed), SS Wendell Soto (released by Angels, Dec. 16)

An Angels third-round pick in 2010 from high school in Sarasota, Fla., Wendell Soto can really pick it at shortstop, though he has spent four of his five pro seasons in Rookie ball because he’s a career .204 hitter over 446 at-bats at the low Class A level.

    40. Wendell Soto (SS)
Bats: Both, Throws: Right Height: 5' 9", Weight: 170 lb.
Born: May 11, 1992 in Sarasota, Florida, US (Age 20)
    (Orem/Cedar Rapids): .282/.339/.436 with 9 HRs and 12 SBs

Wendell Soto was selected in the 3rd round of the 2010 draft, as a slick-fielding shortstop with potential with the bat. Thus far, Soto has struggled to deliver his offensive tools in game situations. However, in 2012, Soto started to make the adjustments at the plate to deliver on his promise. For now, Soto will stick at SS. But, with his build, AngelsWin.com won’t be surprised if he is moved to the other side of the bag down the road.

Reds Sign Jason Marquis To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams [January 21, 2015 at 6:11pm CST]

The Reds announced that they’ve signed veteran right-hander Jason Marquis to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league Spring Training.

The 36-year-old Marquis, a client of ACES, spent much of the 2014 campaign recovering from Tommy John surgery and worked out in front of Reds scouts last May before ultimately signing a minor league deal with the Phillies. In 51 2/3 innings with the Phillies’ minor league affiliates, he posted a combined 4.1 ERA with a 43-to-13 K/BB ratio.

Marquis’ most recent Major League work came as a member of the Padres, with whom he spent parts of the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Signed by the Twins in 2012, Marquis hurled 34 dreadful innings with Minnesota (8.47 ERA) before latching on with the Friars and working to a 4.05 ERA in 211 1/3 innings from 2012-13. In total, the sinker specialist has worked to a 4.56 ERA with 5.3 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and a 50.7 percent ground-ball rate in 1921 career innings between the Braves, Cardinals, Padres, Twins, Cubs, Nationals, D-Backs and Rockies. And, as far as pitchers go, he’s respectable with the bat, as evidenced by a .196/.214/.278 career batting line. (The league-average pitcher hit .122/.153/.153 in 2014.)

The Reds have traded away a pair of starters this offseason in Mat Latos and Alfredo Simon, so it’s not surprising to see the club pursuing possible depth options in the rotation. Currently, Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Tony Cingrani project as the top four starters in Cincinnati’s rotation. Marquis, then, will presumably compete for the fifth spot in the rotation, going up against the likes of right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (acquired from the Marlins in the Latos trade), Dylan Axelrod and David Holmberg.

The Reds re-signed catcher Lou Marson. The 28-year-old first joined the Reds on a minor league deal last May but was limited to just seven Double-A games due to injuries. Marson slashed .219/.309/.299 over 882 career PA for the Phillies and Indians between 2008-13.
