    Local Bands and Musicians

We all know how hard it is for bands to break it big these days, and we've all been to at least one show that made you stop and think, "Dang, these guys are amazing. Why aren't they bigger?" This thread is dedicated to them, whether you're from Cincinnati or not.

Lately I've been on a Wussy kick. Their songwriting and vocal chemistry is some of the best I've ever heard. Case in point:

For sure, they're up there. Was hoping there would be some other responses, but here's one from my other "hometown". They've played with some friends of mine and had a really big year recently, so here's Shovels and Rope:

Wussy are a great band--the best songwriters in Cincinnati imho. Oddly enough, I just recently started working with one of their members. She puts some great tunes on the speakers for us.

    Here's a Cincy band I like a lot with a different sound:

I really like Cary Ann Hearst, Dark. Here she is with Hayes Carll

I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.

If you like the Shovels & Rope, you might like a Cincinnati act known as Wonky Tonk.

Hey camisa, have any bands in the Cincy area dusted off their Braid and Mineral CDs and started playing this "emo revival" stuff?
"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me."

Yeah, their influence was felt all over Cincy about 10 years ago. It seems like a lot of those bands went a more bluegrass/folk direction though. I love folk/bluegrass, but my eyes are rolling out of my head from watching scene kids trying to jump to the next wave of what's trendy.

Anyway, I suggest checking out Ampline (lots of distortion and feedback--one of Cincy's best), Mardou (young guys, bright future, raw songs), The Never Setting Suns (just played a show with them in which they pulled out a Built to Spill cover--good band), Mala in Se (hardest band on the list featuring a double-necked guitar that gets some great sound dynamics--I highly recommend).

There's a local record company that features plenty of local and semi-local bands you might enjoy. http://phratryrecords.com/
