"We inquired about him," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "I don't know how far it will go. We're looking at where we would play him."
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.

    agree100%.
there's nothing like bowling a 300 game! 13 now and retired.

Ricky henderson has a higher OBP than C. patterson and he's retired. C. Trent 6-14-2008

His best OBP in the last three seasons was .304. On a team that struggles to get on base, how is that a great fit?

Because he's be a bench player that hits for power and hits left handed pitching well. He also can fill in at 3b 1b and outfield. As a bench player, and an occasional spot starter for Bruce Votto or Frazier, then he's not a bad fit. The team could use some power off the bench.

At the right price and facing a steady diet of lefties off the bench, he could be OK. Problem is, I'd be afraid the he'd have one good early game against a righty and the Reds would be starting him 3-4 games a week regardless of who is pitching.

Who would they start him over?

    Re: Grab Dayan Viciedo? DFA'd

I think he's a terrible fit. This team needs somebody who can get on base who can get 400 or so PAs to help improve multiple positions where they suck. Somebody who plays SS, 2B and CF and gets on base against RHP is this team's biggest need. Hard to find though. A lefty hitting counterpart to Byrd in LF might also be a good idea. A righty bat who can play CF and RF is also needed. About all this bench has is a decent multi-position defender, pinch-runner, 25th man in Negron and a decent second catcher in Pena. Suarez and Cozart are redundant. One should be the primary SS and the other should not be on the roster. Schumaker is horrible and I can't see him helping in any role unless they make him a coach or something. I'm probably ready to give Felix Perez a look as 4th OF, but that's pathetic. Wish they could get Daniel Nava. Still think Marwin Gonzalez would be a good pick-up to help the MI production against RHP.

I'm curious about Everth Cabrera's situation. He'd be a good get if he's not facing jail time.

Jocketty backed off Viciedo report. Said he didn't see fit. Viciedo wants more PT than team has to give. But inquiry was made #reds
    So much for that.

Last two seasons he did not hit left handed pitching so well. Against lefties:

.679 OPS in 151 PAs last season.
    .709 OPS in 118 PAs in 2013.

He hit lefties very well in 2012 and in limited at bats before then.

I now see he's off the table, so that's that.

Doesn't sound like Viciedo is an option for 4th outfielder and nothing really left in free agency...may have to take the trade route

    Options:
    Shane Victorino
    David Dejesus
    Will Venable

    Out of the box options:
Mitch Moreland (plays 1b and outfield)/ lefty off the bench

Personally, I think the guy is half a bat and even less leather. He really only makes sense to me as part of a DH platoon and bench depth. That is an extravagance for an NL team.

4th OF slot...I still think SD is the place to look. Glut of OF'ers and looking to cut $ to sign Shields.

If they could bring in Venable or Quentin without overpaying, then I'm cool with it.
