Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

Had to be brief bc I'm doing this from the hospital where the newest addition to our family farm system was just drafted and signed: great grandson Liam Etoile Elledge, future star SS of the Reds (his middle name means star in fact) – the Old Red Guard lives another generation!

    Friday May 22nd MiLPOD

Junior Arias with his 4th walkoff, a double in the 12th to knock in the winning run. If you don't believe in clutch then Junior has been randomly lucky as heck! Honorable mention to Yrod with his 3 hit night and all the Tortuga pitchers

    Hitters
Yorman Rodriguez CF Bats 3 for 4, run, double, OF assist Raised avg to .234
Steve Selsky DH Bats 1 for 3, run, RBI, walk Steady Steve at .323
Ramon Cabrera C Bats 2 for 4, run, RBI Quietly efficient
Eugenio Suarez SS Bats 1 for 4, 2 RBI, GIDP Becoming an everyday presence here
Ryan Wright 2B Wahoos 2 for 4, run, double, GIDP .291
Kyle Skipworth C Wahoos 1 for 2, run, homer, RBI, walk Big night for the Skipper
Zach Vincej SS Wahoos 1 for 3, run, homer, RBI
Ronald Bueno 2B Dragons 1 for 4, run
Brian O'Grady 1B Dragons 2 for 4, run, RBI, picked off
Garrett Boulware C Dragons 2 for 4, RBI .299 – catchers are a farm strength
Phillip Ervin LF Tortugas 1 for 5, double, RBI Down to .258, bats packed in ice lately
Junior Arias CF Tortugas 3 for 5, SB, RBI, double, BA up to .262 4th walkoff for Arias in 6 games!
Alex Blandino 2B Tortugas 1 for 3, 2 walks, error (9) .324, getting it done
Jon Matthews DH Tortugas 1 for 3, run

    Starting Pitching
Manny Parra LH Bats 1.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 BB, 3 KO, 0ER Rehabbing it up
Tim Adleman RH Wahoos 7 IP, 5 hits, 5 walks, 0 ER, 3 K, 1.41ERA Walks mar otherwise brilliant outing
Mark Armstrong RH Dragons 6.2 IP, 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 ER, 5 KO Good job by the young RHer
Jackson Stephens RH Tortugas 6 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 0 walks, 1 K Yeomanlike job pitching to contact
Hand got beat around 6 hits, 3 ER in 4 IP

    Relievers
Nick Christiani RH Bats 2.1 IP, 2 hits, zeros No one's hope
Kevin Shackelford RH Wahoos 1 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk Made it exciting but got er done
Kyle McMyne RH Wahoos 1 IP, 1 walk Got the save, ERA at 0.87

    Joel Bender LH Tortugas 2 IP, 1 H, 2 walks, 1 K Wins in 12th
Bats' Sam LeCure got beat up like a schoolyard sissy – 4 hits, walk, 3 ER & no Ks in the 9th
Dragons Brian Hunter blew the save (fanned 4 in 2 IP, 2 hits, tying run in 8th), then Joe Mantoni lost it in the 10th

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Saturday May 23rd

Today we sing the praises of an unsung hero who garners what may be his first MiLPOD:

Avain Rachal, Dragon: 3-5, 3B, 4 RBI. In his 2nd year in the Midwest League, Rachal is holding down the cleanup spot and slowly seeing his numbers climb (up to a .359 OBP). He's also plugging a hole in the injury-ridden Dragons middle infield, at second base, where he started 2 DPs last night. Rachal will play all year at 21, only about 6 weeks older than Gavin LaValley.

Josh Smith, Bat: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7K. Bested the vaunted Eduardo Rodriguez. Mr. Smith is on the 40-man, so if the Reds are going to need starters down the line...

Nate Adcock, Bat: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. ERA at 2.29. Kentuckian is making good in Louisville.

    Ivan DeJesus, Bat: 2-4, 3B (3)

Steve Selsky, Bat: 2-4, RBI. The former 33rd-rounder hitting .330 and still only 25 (26 in July). Rooting for this guy...

    Chris Dominguez, Bat: 2-2, RBI

Robert Stephenson, Blue Wahoo: 4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 11K. 4 of the 5 walks came in the 1st inning.

    Kyle Waldrop, Blue Wahoo: 2-5, 2 2B (10), BB (4), RBI (26). Played LF and batted 3rd.

Jesse Winker, Blue Wahoo: 1-4, 2 BB, OF assist. Back in the lineup after missing a few games with an undisclosed injury, played RF and batted 5th.

Marquez Smith, Blue Wahoo: 2-5, BB, 2 RBI

    SMB, Blue Wahoo: 2-6, 2B

Zach Vincej, Blue Wahoo: 3-4, 2B, BB. He's missed time, but is posting a solid offensive season so far (.364 OBP, .758 OPS).

Tortugas were suspended in the middle of the 3rd. Travieso had given up 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits. Junior Arias was 1-1 with a SB (5 already), driven in by Blandino.

    Tyler Mahle, Dragon: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. 79 pitches and 56 strikes, very nice.

Conor Krauss, Dragon, 1 IP, zeros, 2 Ks

Brennan Bernardino, Dragon: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, K. 7th straight scoreless outing, ERA down to 1.80.

Ronald Bueno, Dragon: 3-6, SB (6)

Luis Gonzalez, Dragon: 3-6, 2 RBI

Brian O'Grady, Dragon: 1-3, 3 R, RBI, 3 BB. 2nd in the Midwest League in walks, trailing the leader by 1.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Sunday, May 24

Yorman Rodriguez, Louisville . . . 3-4, HR (5), 2 R, 2 RBI. The Bats' center fielder (Redszone prospect #9) posted his second 3-hit game of the past three. He's 8 for 17 over his last four tilts. (Update: On Doug's site, a comment by MK notes that Yorman's home run cleared the fence behind the fan area. http://redsminorleagues.com/2015/05/...-review-52415/)

Also notable on an otherwise dismal day in which the youngsters, unfortunately, mimicked their role models, even afield (the farms doled out 10 unearned runs, 9 of them by the Tortugas over two games) . . .

David Holmberg, Louisville: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K. The big lefty continues to defy assessment.

Steve Selsky, Louisville: 2-4, 2B, RBI. Batting .337, and his .382 OBP is only 2 points over his career number.

Chris Dominguez, Louisville: 2-3, HR (3), SB (3). Cleared the .200 mark.

Drew Hayes, Louisville: .2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (1). Entered with two on, one out, and a 1-run lead, and came through with his first AAA save.

    Seth Mejias-Brean, Pensacola: 3-5, RBI.

    Jesse Winker, Pensacola: 1-2, 2B, 3 BB, R.

    Kyle McMyne, Pensacola: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. After four unsightly seasons, has allowed 2 runs in 21.2 IP.

    Phillip Ervin, Daytona (2 G): 2-5, 2B, HR (9), 2 RBI.

Junior Arias, Daytona (2 G): 2-7, 2 2B, BB, 2 R, 2 SB (6). Nice to see him coming on strong after last year's broken ankle.

    Carlton Daal, Daytona (2 G): 4-6, RBI.

Taylor Sparks, Daytona (G 1): 2-4, R. His 3 errors contributed to 6 unearned runs.

    Amir Garrett, Daytona (G 2): 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Nice line without the unearneds.

    Nick Travieso, Daytona (G 1): 2.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Nick Howard, Daytona (G 1): .1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. Can't pin that one on the defense.

    Gavin LaValley, Dayton: 2-3, BB.

    Wyatt Strahan, Dayton: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Peripherals were okay.

    Jeremy Kivel, Dayton: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Monday, May 25

Luis Gonzalez, Dayton: 4-5, RBI. Despite the four hits, the 20-year old Dominican shortstop was almost removed from MiLPoD consideration because of two throwing errors that led to two runs, but the other main candidates (Wright, Mejias-Brean) had miscues of their own so the nod goes to Gonzalez.

    Other notables:

Chris Dominguez, Louisville: 2-4, R, RBI

Jose Constanza, Louisville: 2-4, RBI, SB

    Ryan Wright, Pensacola: 2-5, 2B, 3 RBI

    Jesse Winker, Pensacola: 1-4, BB

Seth Mejias-Brean, Pensacola: 3-4, 2B, R (although the power hasn’t come around, has improved his line to .259/.354/.353 after a pretty poor start)

    Ray Chang, Pensacola: 2-4, 2 R

Juan Silva, Pensacola: 2-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB

    Blaine Howell, Pensacola: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 K

    Tejay Antone, Dayton: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

IIRC, the Reds had good things to say about Luis G last year. Starting the season at Dayton seemed to confirm that. Looking at his numbers, I see 34 K's and only 4 BB's. The K rate is not that bad at 18% considering that he is young for the league. His contact rate suggests to me that he could learn to draw more BB's.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Tuesday, May 26

Seth Varner, Dayton . . . 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. The lefty from Clermont Northeastern HS pulls down his organization-high fourth MiLPoD award of the season. It's the seventh time in nine starts in which he has walked nobody. The shutout (with help from Jake Paulson) righted the former Miami U star after his two worst outings of the year. With the help of a pair of double plays, Varner faced just one batter over the minimum.

Also notable on a night in which a lot of performance was packed into three games . . .

Ramon Cabrera, Louisville: 3-3, 3 RBI. The 25-year-old catcher, a switch-hitter from Venezuela, carries a .353 OBP over eight seasons.

Joel Bender, Daytona: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Another local left-hander, a 5-year farmhand out of Oak Hills HS, Bender (with a name like that, he'd better have a good curveball) took over in the fourth inning from Sal Romano (38 pitches) and earned the W.

    Taylor Sparks, Daytona: 3-4, 2 R.

Paul Kronenfeld, Dayton: 3-4, 2B, R, RBI. A first baseman drafted last year in the 25th round out of Catawba. Anybody know anything else about him? (Edit: Geez, I couldn't even spell him right.)

Jimmy Pickens, Dayton: 2-4, HR (1), 2 RBI.

    Jonathan Reynoso, Dayton: 2-4, R.

Brian O'Grady, Dayton: 1-3, 2B. Versatile lefty swinger batted cleanup for the Dragons.

    Jake Paulson, Dayton: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Lowered ERA to 2.93.

Chad Wallach, Daytona: 2-3, BB, 2 R. Erstwhile catcher seems to be settling in at 1B.

Jon Matthews, Daytona: 2-4, 2 RBI. Trying to get into the swing after a late start to his season.

Carlton Daal, Daytona: 0-1, BB, HBP, SF, R, RBI.

    Ivan DeJesus, Louisville: 2-3, RBI.

    Yorman Rodriguez, Louisville: 1-4, 3B, R.

    Eugenio Suarez, Louisville: 1-3, BB, 2 R.

    Jose De La Torre, Louisville: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

    Pedro Villarreal, Louisville: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Nate Adcock, Louisville: 1 IP, zeroes, Sv (10). Final out brought the Bats to .500.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

Impressed, Jake, that you stuck with Pensacola for 14 innings (although you're of course on Central time).

Impressed also with Arias. I find it interesting that Arias and Ervin now occupy the top of the Daytona lineup and two-thirds of the outfield, with Arias in center, for the most part. The two of them are roughly the same age; Arias is about six months older. Arias of course has much more professional time under his belt, but Ervin has college experience and the cachet of being a first-round draft choice. Both have speed and power; Arias more speed and Ervin more power. Ervin, after a terrible 2014, was ranked #13 in the Redszone prospect poll. Arias, after breaking his leg early last year, is #20. Ervin had a great start this year but has waned. Arias had a late start but is making an impact on a regular basis. Just wondering who might really be the better prospect here--although there's nothing wrong with letting that question hang and watching them develop at their own paces.

Impressed, finally, with the job Jacob Johnson turned in last night. Scoreless ball from the 10th through the 13th. That's clutch. He's a guy who lost his shine early on, by virtue of arm trouble, and has persevered. Would love to see him flourish and rise.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

I had company late last night so I couldn't watch the game. Instead I sat on the couch, glancing at my notepad and generally being rude, I'm sure. Then they figured out I was following a minor league game they started in (all KC or StL fans). "Can;t watch the Reds anymore, is that it?"

    Welllllll.....sorta

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Thursday, May 28th, 2015:

Not a ton of exciting performances, especially with the bats, down on the farm on Thursday. Two Dragons were in the running for the MiPOTD Award. Paul Kronenfeld had two hits, including the walk-off winner for Dayton in the bottom of the ninth, but, narrowly, the pick is....

Tyler Mahle, Dayton...The righty pitched into the sixth inning and struck out a career-high 9 batters, without issuing a walk. His only blemish was a solo shot given up in the top of the sixth. He lowered his ERA to 2.95, meaning all five Dayton starters now have ERAs under 3.00. 5.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K.

    PENSACOLA HITTERS:

Cam Maron - 1-2, SGL, 2 BB, RS. Maron, a 34-round pick by the Mets in 2009, has a career minor-league OBP of .387.

Beau Amaral - 2-4, 2 SGL, SB (6). Amaral has struggled at the plate all season and is still hitting sub-Mendoza at .197.

Marquez Smith - 1-3, SGL, BB. After a slow start to the season, Smith is hitting .333 in his last ten games.

    PENSACOLA PITCHERS:

    Zack Weiss - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Worked a 1-2-3 inning.

    Kyle McMyne - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Unscored upon in his last 10 relief appearances.

    DAYTONA HITTERS:

Junior Arias - 1-4, DBL, SB (9), RBI. Drove in the only Tortugas' run yesterday.

Sebastian Elizalde - 0-2, 2 BB, SB (2). Has stolen a base in two consecutive contests.

Jon Matthews - 1-3, SGL, BB. Has reached base six times in his last three starts.

    DAYTONA PITCHERS:

    Nick Routt - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. 15/3 K/BB ratio for the season.

    Jimmy Moran - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Worked a perfect inning, striking out a pair.

    DAYTON HITTERS:

Avain Rachal - 1-4, SGL, 3 RBI. Started at second base last night, where his stick (.355 OBP) plays better. Clutch two-run single in the eighth.

Brian O'Grady - 1-4, DBL, 2 RS. Scored twice, including game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Nick Benedetto - 2-3, SGL, DBL, 2 RS. Signed as a free agent out of Venezuela, Benedetto is considered an excellent defensive outfielder. Listed as being 6'0" and 150 lbs, he needs to start rooming with Brian 'Beef' O'Grady.

Paul Kronenfeld - 2-4, SGL, DBL, 2 RBI. His walk-off double capped off an excellent series, in which Kronenfeld went 6-11 and drove in five runs. Kronenfeld is in the Witness Protection Program, and does not allow his picture to be taken. Maybe.

    DAYTON PITCHERS:

Brennan Bernardino - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. The slender lefty (6'4", 180) just keeps getting batters out. He has not allowed an earned run in his last eight trips to the mound, covering 11.1 innings and fanning 12 over that period.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Friday May 29th MiLPOD

Lots of good hitting performances by Daytona. Phil Ervin gets POD any other night with 4 hits and 4 RBI but Robert Stephenson gets my nod, if nothing else, just for the sheer relief seeing his great start. 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 hits, 1 BB, 10 Ks. Honorable mentions to Ervin, Wallach, Ramirez, Perez and Rachal

Bats were 1 hit so only Suarez gets a nibble here. Pensacola also lost 1-0. Tough night.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

I am going to Daytona game tonight so hopefully Ervin didn't use up all his good mojo last night. I do get to see Amir Garrett tonight, so I got that going for me......which is nice

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Saturday May 30rd

Today we welcome back the DSL Reds and Rojos, those most hopeful -- among all MiLPOD hopefuls. The Reds won 2-0 while the Rojos lost 9-0.

Amir Garrett, Tortuga: 7 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 12 K. He's been creeping up Reds' prospect lists, and this outing probably accelerates that. Garrett may well be the most athletic pitcher in professional baseball. It's either him or that lefty in the Reds bullpen. Could Garrett be in that bullpen too, sometime in 2015? He's on the 40-man.

David Holmberg, Bat: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. 5 of last 6 outing have been at least 6 innings with 0 or 1 ER allowed. Still 23 years old.

    Irving Falu, Bat: 3-4, 2B

Ivan DeJesus, Bat: 2-4. Ivan and Irving are hitting .318.

Steve Selsky, Bat: 2-4, RBI, OF assist from LF.

Eugenio Suarez, Bat: 1-4, HR (6)

Blue Wahoos were washed out. They'll play 2 today.

    Junior Felix Arias, Tortuga: 2-4

Sebastian Elizalde, Tortuga: 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI (30)

Chad Wallach, Tortuga: 1-3, HR (3), 2 RBI, caught Garrett's gem.

Gavin LaValley, Dragon: 2-4, 2B (9). Had 2 of the Dragons' 3 hits.

Scott Brattvet, Dragon: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. 8th round senior sign from 2013 helping the Dragons pen to the tune of a 1.00 WHIP in 19 IP.

Johnny Sims, DSL Rojo: 1-2, 3B

Marcos Encarnacion, DSL Red: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. 19 year-old started 12 games for the DSL Reds last year and posted a 2.44 ERA.

    Hernando Guzman, DSL Red: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

    Ricardo Smith, DSL Red: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, K, save (1)

Andy Sugilio, DSL Red: 2-3, RBI. 18 year-old Dominican played CF and hit 3rd. 2nd year in the DSL

Raul Juarez, DSL Red: 2-4. 17 year-old Venezuelan just starting out in pro ball.

Edwin Yon, DSL Red: 1-3, BB, RBI. Still just 16 (17 in July). Per Baseball America, he got more $$$ than any other Latin American signee last year (outside of Iglesias).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Sunday, May 31

Garrett Boulware, Dayton . . . 2-4, 2B, HR (4), 2 R, 2 RBI. The catcher from Clemson, a 16th-rounder last year, is rocking a .390 OPS and .846 OPS. He leads the Dragons in homers and slugging, and apparently he's doing a pretty good job of handling a pitching staff that, until Seth Varner stumbled Sunday, featured all five starters with ERAs under 3.00.

Also notable on a day in which Dayton rallied, Pensacola was rained out of a pair and four Daytona relievers, who shall remain nameless, gave up 14 runs, 14 hits and 5 walks in 3 epic innings . . .

Eugenio Suarez, Louisville: 2-4, HR (7), 2 R. Venezuelan SS homered for the second straight game.

Jon Moscot, Louisville: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K. Nice bounce-back for the savvy Santa Monican, who notched his seventh win on the heels of his only defeat.

Ryan LaMarre, Louisville: 2-4, 2 2B. Doubles will do.

Ramon Cabrera, Louisville: 2-4, R, RBI.

Jacob Ehret, Dayton: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Steadied the ship as Dragons came back from a 5-1 deficit. Lowered ERA to 2.93.

    Conor Krauss, Dayton: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Earned the W by pitching through the 10th.

    Ronald Bueno, Dayton: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI.

    Jimmy Pickens, Dayton: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

Luis Gonzalez, Dayton: 1-4, 2 RBI. Delivered walkoff single in the 10th. Slick shortstop leads the Dragons in RBIs with 20.

Phillip Ervin, Daytona: 2-5, 2 RBI, SB (8).

Alex Blandino, Daytona: 2-4, BB, R.

    Sebastian Elizalde, Daytona: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI.

Robert Ramirez, Daytona: 2-5, R, RBI.

    Nick Howard, Daytona: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. Not exactly pinpoint, but better.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Monday, June 1

Rain wreaked havoc on the minor league schedule Monday, washing out Louisville and Pensacola again. With the shortened agenda, MiLPoD honors go to Junior Arias, Daytona: 2-5, HR (2), 2 R, 2 RBI, SB (10). The 23-year-old Dominican centerfielder (2015 Redszone prospect #20) filled up the stat sheet nicely and raised his line to .270/.305/.410.

    Other notables:

Alex Blandino, Daytona: 2-3, 2B, 2 R. Getting pretty excited about this guy's season.

    Robert Ramirez, Daytona: 3-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI

Barrett Astin, Daytona: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. Best start of the year for the righty obtained in the Broxton deal.

Narciso Crook, Dayton: 1-4, 3B, RBI

    Mark Armstrong, Dayton: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

    Brennan Bernardino, Dayton: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

    Brian Hunter, Dayton: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K

Raul Jaurez, DSL Reds: 2-3, R

Carlos Rivero, DSL Reds: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, SB

    Geremi Perez, DSL Reds: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

    Eriberto Garcia, DSL Reds: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
