Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

Glad to see SMB starting to come around a bit in AA, 2 straight multi-hit games.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

Hard to pick a POD from the entrants today because 2 stood out: Phil Ervin and Steve Selsky. Pitchers were fine but no one so dominant they forced an issue with these two outfielders. Ervin smacked another homer, hit a double, walked, scored twice and knocked in 1. Selsky had a 4 hit game, slammed a pair of doubles and had a run and an RBI. Both are hot right now and are previous POD winners. This is hard to pick - both had great nights and helped win, but in the end I am going with Phil Ervin again. Why? Phil was heads and the nickel I tossed came up heads...

    POD:
Phillip Ervin CF Turtles 2/3, walk, 2R, double, solo HR, 1RBI now at .340/.438/.638/1.076 PHIL POWER!

    honorable mention:
Steve Selsky RF Bats 4/5 1R 2 doubles 1RBI at .370/.433/.667/1.100 See what one great game does to your numbers 8 games in? Came in hitting .273

    Hitters
Eugenio Suarez SS Bats 2/5, 1R, solo HR, 1RBI

Ivan De Jesus 3B Bats 1/4, triple, 1BB, now at .375 keeps getting hits almost every game yet hs average keeps falling. Hard to stay near .500

Yorman Rodriguez CF Bats 1/4, 1BB

    Josh Satin DH Bats 2/4, 1R, double, 1RBI, 1BB

    Chris Dominguez 1B Bats 1/5, 1R, double

    Bryson Smith LF Bats 1/5, 1R, 1RBI

Ramon Cabrera C Bats 2/3, SH

    Jermaine Curtis 2B Bats 2/3, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB, SB

Beau Amaral CF Wahoos 1/3, 1BB

Jesse Winker LF Wahoos 1/4, struck out 3X & was picked off first, bit of a rough start for Jesse

    Marquez Smith 1B Wahoos 2/3, 1R

    Chris Berset C Wahoos 1/2, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB

Zach Vincej SS Wahoos 2/2, double, 1BB, error

    Alex Blandino SS Turtles 1/3, 1R, 1BB

    S. Elizalde LF Turtles 1/4, 2RBI

Chad Wallach 1B Turtles 2/4, 1R, solo HR, 1RBI, making the Latos deal look ridiculous per early returns between Disco and Chad, Maron caught today but
the Red are grooming Wallach to play a couple positions- smart to have a catcher who can play other spots too

Taylor Sparks 3B Turtles 2/4, 1R, double, 1RBI at .302/.349/.512/.861 needs to walk a bit more but he is hitting, now has 3 errors for the year, a bit
    troubling

Jeff Gelalich RF Turtles 1/4, 1RBI

    Carlton Daal 2B Turtles 1/2, 1R, 1BB

    Brian O'Grady CF Dragonsg2 1/2, 1BB, SB

    Gavin LaValley 3B Dragonsg2 1/3 SB

    Pitchers
    Jon Moscot SP Bats 6IP 6H/1BB 6K 2ER 1HR, 2WP ERA 1.54(W, 2-0)

Carlos Contreras RP Bats 1.2IP 2H/1BB 3K 0ER ERA 1.29(H, 2) Didn't get burned but he played with fire a bit, numbers look better than he pitched

    Nate Adcock RP Bats 1.1IP 0H/0BB 1K 0ER

Daniel Wright SP Wahoos 5IP 6H/0BB 5K 3R 2earned Dan gets his 2nd loss but it was a solid effort

Layne Somsen RP Wahoos 3IP 2H/1BB 4K 0ER another future bullpen arm in Cincinnati? One that goes 3 innings and finishes? Shut yer mouth!

Sal Romano SP Turtles 6IP 3H/0BB 5K 3R 1 earned (thanks to errors by Blandino and Sparks)(W, 1-1)

    El'Hajj Muhammad RP Turtles 2IP 0H/0BB 3K ERA 0.00 (H, 2) another future Reds reliever?

Zack Weiss RP Turtles 1IP 0H/0BB 3K ERA 0.00 future Reds closer?

    Jake Paulson SP Dragonsg2 4IP 4H/0BB 2K 1ER ERA 3.38 Loss 0-1

    Brian Hunter RP Dragonsg2 2IP 1H/1BB 1K 0ER ERA 0.00

    Farm 2-3 on the night
Louisville won 6-2. Moscot had a solid start, allowing 6 hits and 2 ER and a solo homer. One of his 2 WP on the night led to a run. Contreras took over for Moscot in the 7th and went 1 and 2/3rds fanning 3. He and Adcock kept the game under control but Carlos had to be pulled when he got in trouble in the 8th. Steve Selsky led the offense with 4 hits including a pair of doubles but the whole lineup was in on the offense, everyone getting at least 1 base knock. Suarez gets his average to .220 but had a weird night. On a YRod single to RF he held up to see if it would be caught but was then nailed at 2nd by the RFer Collins(that guy has an arm now). Suarez also laid down a poor bunt on a sacrifice attempt but they got the lead runner at third anyway. Eugenio had 2 pop ups, a single & TOOTBLAN, and a failed sacrifice attempt when he atoned with a solo shot in the 8th.

Pensacola dropped a game to Birmingham 3-2. The Blue Wahoos struggled offensively, not putting up much of a battle until the 8th when they scored two, falling just short in the late rally. Pitching was solid. Wright had a good start, not spectacular by any means but Somsen came on and pitched 3 very strong innings to finish the game. Just couldn't string together any hits until it was a run short and a bit late.

Daytona won and it wasn't particularly close. 7-3. Pitching was again solid (11Ks and 0BB) and the hitters had a good night up and down the lineup with Ervin and Sparks leading the charge.

The Dragons were blown out in their first game 8-0. 2 singles and a walk was all the offense they could muster. Wyatt Strahan got beat like a drum - 7 hits 2 walks and a homer allowed in 4 innings. Jake Ehret got nicked for a run and 3 hits finishing the shortened game.

Dayton lost game 2 in 7 innings (rain makeup from the 21st) 1-0. Dragons managed just 4 singles and never really threatened. So far the Dragons offense is having trouble blowing smoke let alone fire. Pitching was strong with starter Paulson getting nicked for 1 lone run in the first - all the scoring in the game for either team.

Note that in 4 games total the pitching allowed just 4 walks & 24 hits while fanning 33 in 33 innings! Of course there was that 5th game - Dayton gave up 8 runs - it ruins the whole thing: 7 walks 34hits fanning 35 in 39 innings

99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

MiPOTD: Amir Garrett, Daytona The strapping lefty faced just one batter over the minimum for the first five innings before wobbling in the sixth. Still pitched well enough to win. Gotta love those 7/0 K/BB numbers. Final line: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K..

Eugenio Suarez - Louisville - 1-4, DBL, RS.

Ivan De Jesus, Jr. - Louisville - 1-4, DBL, RBI.

    Donald Lutz - Louisville - 1-4, DBL.

    Jesse Winker - Pensacola - 2-5, SGL, HR (2), RS, 2 RBIs.

    Seth Mejias-Brean - Pensacola - 1-4, TRPL.

Chris Berset - Pensacola - Now hitting .357. 3-4, 3 DBLs, RS, RBI. Was in the running for MiPOTD, but he got picked off second once and committed a throwing error.

    Josh Smith - Pensacola - Quality start for Smith. 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K.

Kyle McMyne, Carlos Gonzalez and Ben Klimesh - Pensacola - Each provided a scoreless inning of relief. Klimesh picked up his second save.

Philip Ervin - Daytona - Last night's MiPOTD nearly made it two in a row. Now hitting .347. 1-2, HR (4), 2 BB, RS, RBI. Only drawback was after each of his two walks he was gunned down trying to steal.

    Alex Blandino - Daytona - 1-4, DBL.

Chad Wallach - Daytona - 2-4, SGL, DBL.

Ty Washington - Dayton - 1-4, DBL, RBI.

Little Jimmy Pickens - Dayton - 2-3, SGL, DBL.

Narciso Crook - Dayton - 2-3, 2 SGLS, RS. The Dragons have scored one run over their last 23 innings.

    Conor Kraus - Dayton - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. He came on in a bases-loaded, no-outs situation and promptly got a strike out and a double play to keep Dayton close.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

Amir Garrett has 2 BB/13 in 11 innings. In his first start he threw 2.2 innings allowing 0 runs with 0 BB/5 K until the game was suspended. Those stats won't count until the game is resumed. Factor those numbers in and Garrett has 2 BB/18 K in 13.2 innings. Impressive.

    Phillip Ervin is sitting at .347/.429/.694 - 1.122 OPS with 5 2B/4 HR and 7 BB/10 K in 56 PA's.

    Zack Weiss has thrown 7.1 hitless innings with 1 BB/15 K and a 5.00 GO/FO ratio.

Alex Blandino has 10 BB to only 3 K in 51 PA's and a .412 OBP. You got to love that approach.

Taylor Sparks is hitting for power but has to improve on that 2 BB/17 K.

Travieso is pitching well. That Daytona team has been fun to follow so far.

Looked up Jimmy Pickens (referred to as "Little Jimmy Pickens" on this thread).

    He's 6 feet and weighs 220.

    Just saying.

Phil Ervin on BA Prospect Hot Sheet this week.

Peralta, Sparks, Diaz, Pickens, Boulware, LaValley and Gonzalez were considered for POD honors. In the end it came down to Diaz with his 2 hits, homer and 4 RBI vs. Boulware's 2 hits, homer and 3 RBI. I picked the catcher who helped his team win, selecting:

    Garrett Boulware C Dragons 2/4, 2R, homer, 3RBI

    Cam Maron C .........Turtles 1/2

Taylor Sparks 3B......Turtles 2/3, walk, 2R, double, SB & CS

    Joe Hudson DH ........Turtles 1/4, 1R, 2RBI

    Sammy Diaz 1B ........Turtles 2/4, 1R, homer, 4RBI

    Brian O'Grady CF-RF..Dragons 2/5, 1R

    Gavin LaValley 3B......Dragons 1/3, 2 walks, 1R, double, 1RBI

    Ronald Bueno LF.......Dragons 1/3, 2R

    Jimmy Pickens DH......Dragons 3/4, 1R

    Avain Rachal 1B........Dragons 1/4, triple, 2RBI

    Luis Gonzalez SS.......Dragons 2/4, 1R, homer, 2RBI

    Pitchers
    Wandy Peralta SP Wahoos 6IP 5H/2BB, 6K, 1ER, ERA at 2.30

    Drew Hayes RP Wahoos 2IP 2H/0BB, 0K, 0ER, ERA at 0.00

    Blaine Howell RP Tortugas 1IP 0H/0BB, 0K, 0ER

    Evan Mitchell RP Tortugas 1IP 0H/0BB, 1K, 0ER

    Seth Varner SP Dragons 6IP 12H/0BB,5K, 2ER ERA at 2.65 (W, 3-0)

    Scott Brattvet RP Dragons 1IP 0H/0BB, 0K, 0ER

    Farm record 1-3
Louisville's game was a disaster, getting clipped by Columbus 11-7. The offense put up 4 in the first and then 3 more in the 9th but Lorenzen was hammered for 11 hits, a homer and 5 ER in his 6 innings and De La Torre & Villareal got hit just as hard in relief. Lorenzen did fan 7 in 6 innings, which should make the "he doesn't strike enough out" crowd happy. Really bad night on the mound all round. Several Bats got hits but no one really had an outstanding game. Lutz, Selsky & Cabrera each had a pair of singles. Suarez stole home in the first inning which was the highlight of the contest for the Bats.

Pensacola lost a heartbreaker 2-1. Birmingham scored the wining run in the 9th. All the SeaFish could manage was 6 singles, fanning 12 times. Peralta and Drew Hayes pitched some great baseball but Sharky gave up two hits and a walk in surrending the losing run in the 9th.

Daytona got ripped by the Tampa Yankees 12-7. Nick Howard had a forgettable start, hit hard and wild to boot, 3 walks and a hit batter. Bender came up and allowed 7 hits 7R, 5 earned in the third (Ervin's error cost them 2 runs). Then he completed his Jekyll & Hyde act, allowing a sole single in the next 3 innings. Yes, somehow, for some reason, they left him in after his disastrous third but it actually worked. Way too late, but it did work. Howell and Mitchell finished it strong but it was already too late. The Tortugas offense was good, just not as good as the first third of the game's pitching was bad. Sammy Diaz and Alex Blandino both went deep for the Turtles.

Dayton got the sole farm win of the day, beating West Michigan 8-5. Boulware and Gonzalez hit homers to help Dayton break a 5 game losing skein. LaValley added an RBI double and Rachal cracked a 2 run triple, while little Jimmy Pickens had 3 hits. Lil Jimmy has been eating his Wheaties - 5 for his last 7. Varner started and got paddled around a bit, 12 hits, but he got big Ks and walked no one, while the Dragons played errorless ball to help him keep them from plating all those runners (just 2 crossed the dish). Bernadino came on and surrendered 2 runs, and Chacin closed it allowing another, sandwiching Brattvet's perfect 8th.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Games of Saturday, April 25

Jacob Ehret, Dragon: 2.2 IP 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. It's not often a middle reliever graces the MiLPOD stage. This is the 2nd dominant long relief outing turned in by last year's 14th rounder and he now has 16 Ks in 10 IP with a 1.80 ERA. Kept the game close/tied, and the Dragons pulled out a 9th inning comeback. Quality hold. Ehret's from UCLA, like Reds farmhands Amaral, Gelalich and Weiss.

Louisville was rained out. They'll play 2 today.

    Robert Stephenson, Blue Wahoo: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR allowed. 98 pitches, 58 strikes and a 5:2 GB/FB.

Carlos Gonzalez the reliever, Blue Wahoo: 2 IP, zeros.

(Blue Wahoo hitters managed just 3 singles, but walked 8 times.)

Sebastian Elizalde, Tortuga: 2-4, HR (2)

Cam Maron, Tortuga: 2-3, BB, RBI. Claimed in the Rule V minor league phase from the Mets this past offseason. Not sure why Reds can have him in high A because he played there last year too. High OBP LH hitter who's old for the level (24).

Alex Blandino, Tortuga: 2-5, HR (2), 3 RBI. Has homered in back to back games.

    El'Hajj Muhammad, Tortuga: - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 KK. Unscored on in 6.2 IP so far, but he's walked 6.

Barrett Astin, Tortuga: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Playing the role of handyman out of the Daytona BP and getting the job done.

Zack Weiss, Tortuga: .1 IP, Save (3). He's been dominant, like The Chapman of the FSL. Hitless 7.2 innings with 15 Ks. And Zack looks like Zappa -- http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp...ching/2015/ALL

Jimmy Pickens, Dragon: 1-3, BB, SB (3)

Garrett Boulware, Dragon: 2-3, 2 RBI, sacrifice. Hitting over .300 while the rest of the Dragons are much lower.

    Narciso Crook, Dragon: 1-3, BB

Wendell Soto, Dragon: 2-4, game-tying RBI in the bottom of the 9th.

Mark Armstrong, Dragon: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. 6:2 GB/FB. The big Buffalo righthander has nice polish for a young guy out of a cold weather HS. He's given up some hits (22 in 17 IP) but only 2 walks and no homers. If he can stay healthy and maybe add a touch of velo, I think he's got a chance.

Brian Hunter, Dragon: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, K, win. Still sports the spotless ERA (8.1 IP).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Sunday, April 26

Layne Somsen, Pensacola . . . 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. The righthander from South Dakota made the most of his first starting assignment of the season, enabling the Blue Wahoos to avoid a doubleheader sweep. It was only the fourth start he has made since being drafted in the 22nd round of 2013. In those, his line stands at 17 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 17 K. Somsen got a late start on his pro career, and his age (25) no doubt works against him as a prospect. But he has put up a 2.37 career ERA. (And besides that, his mother reads Redszone.) More, please.

Also notable on a day when less-heralded pitching prospects (Somsen, Adleman, Mahle) far overshadowed the ostensible aces (Travieso, Iglesias) . . .

Tyler Mahle, Dayton: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K. For that matter, it's about time Mahle (RZ prospect #24) is considered an ace; at least, the low-minors variety. He took care of his 7 innings with 92 pitches. Last year, for Billings, he completed a 9-inning, 3-hit shutout with 80 pitches. The kid's got some moxie.

    Tim Adleman, Pensacola: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Tall righty sports a 2.38 ERA.

Matt Magill, Louisville: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 9 K. The return for Heisey (RZ #33) was making his organizational debut. It wasn't a good one; but he can strike 'em out.

    Raisel Iglesias, Louisville: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Hard to figure.

    Nick Travieso, Daytona: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Whoopsie.

Phillip Ervin, Daytona: 3-4, BB, R, RBI, SB (5).

    Sammy Diaz, Daytona: 3-4, R, 2 RBI.

Ryan LaMarre, Louisville (G1): 2-3, HR (1). Led off the game by taking Bruce Chen deep. The Bats wouldn't score again.

    Chris Dominguez, Louisville (G2): 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, SB (2).

Avain Rachal, Dayton: 2-4, RBI. Batting cleanup for the Dragons.

Wendell Soto, Dayton: 1-2, 2B, BB, R, RBI, SB (3).

Luis Gonzalez, Dayton: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Brian Hunter, Dayton: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, Sv (2). Might have something here.

Cam Maron, Daytona: 2-4, R, RBI. Former Mets farmhand, a catcher and Rule 5 pick, is off to a .333 start, with a .419 OBP.

    Jeff Gelalich, Daytona: 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 R.

    Sebastian Elizalde, Daytona: 2-4, R.

    Alex Blandino, Daytona: 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

    Ryan Wright, Pensacola (G1): 2-4, R.

Jesse Winker, Pensacola (G1): 1-2, 2 BB (one intentional with tying run on second base in the ninth).

Juan Perez, Pensacola (G2): 1-2, BB.

    Sean Buckley, Pensacola (G2): 1-1, 2B, RBI.

    Kyle McMyne, Pensacola (G1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Ben Klimesh, Pensacola (G2): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (3).

I'm reminded of ol' Princeton's adage (and my addendum): Challenge thy hitters and coddle thy pitchers. But while a hitter might appear ready he may not be; when a pitcher appears ready, he is.

Not saying both Garrett and Travieso are ready, by any means, but it wouldn't surprise me if either got a September look-see.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Monday, April 27

Several strong individual performances on the farm tonight. Let's give the MiLPOD nod for the first time this year to Ivan DeJesus, Louisville: 4-5, 3B, 2 RBI. After cooling off a bit last week, the soon-to-be 28 year old Puerto Rican was back to business tonight, pushing his line to .383/.439/.533. DeJesus, who was involved a few years back in the big Dogders/Red Sox swap that gave LA Beckett, Crawford and Gonzalez, played both corner positions tonight, albeit not at the same time.

    Other notables:

    Irving Falu, Louisville: 2-5, SB

Nick Christiani, Louisville (former reliever turned future Reds LF. Just kidding...maybe): 1-1, 2B, 2 RBI

Jose De La Torre, Louisville: 2 IP, H, 5 K (the 29 year old right-hander had some pretty ugly outings until tonight)

Jesse Winker, Pensacola: 1-2, R, 3 BB (unclear if he's paid for that)

    Seth Mejias-Brean, Pensacola: 2-4, 2B, RBI

    Phillip Ervin, Daytona: 2-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB (.338/.421/.615)

    Alex Blandino, Daytona: 1-5, HR (3), R, 2 RBI

Sebastian Elizalde, Daytona: 1-5, HR (3), R, RBI

    Sammy Diaz, Daytona: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI

    Joe Hudson, Daytona: 2-4, HR (2), 2 R, 3 RBI

    Sal Romano, Daytona: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K (3.93 ERA, 6BB/15K, 1.15 WHIP)

Barrett Astin, Daytona: IP, BB, K

Blaine Howell, Daytona: IP, H, K

    Nolan Becker, Daytona: IP, K

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Tuesday, April 28

Phillip Ervin, Daytona . . . 2-5, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI. The former Samford Bulldog and first-rounder (Redszone prospect #13) is now tied for the Florida State League lead in HRs and a close second in OPS. Gotta love the power-speed combo he’s been flashing, while holding down CF, batting leadoff, and putting last year behind him.

Also notable on an eventful day in which Zack Weiss completed his virtual no-hitter to start the season . . .

    Ivan DeJesus, Louisville (G1-2): 4-6, 2B, R, RBI. Batting .409, OPS 1.019. Played 3B in both games.

Donovan Hand, Louisville (G2): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. His first start of the season required only 49 pitches. Former Brewer (2013) has now thrown 10.1 scoreless innings.

Amir Garrett, Daytona: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K. Lanky lefty down to 2.81, and that's not counting his dazzling but aborted first start.

Zack Weiss, Daytona: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The first hit came after he’d completed his 9th inning of work on the season. In 9.2 IP, the former Bruin has racked up 18 K.

Wyatt Strahan, Dayton: 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Strahan (RZ #25) and Tyler Mahle provide a nice top to the Dragons' rotation.

Brian O’Grady, Dayton: 0-2, 3 BB, 2 R, SB (8). Leads the org in unusual lines. Then again, he’s a first baseman who plays center field.

Carlton Daal, Daytona: 3-3, R, 2 RBI. Playing 2B with Blandino at SS.

    Robert Ramirez, Daytona: 2-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI.

Taylor Sparks, Daytona: 2-5, 2B, RBI.

El’Hajj Muhammad, Daytona: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Seems to be holding up well after serious knee surgery.

Eugenio Suarez, Louisville (G1): 1-2, HR (3), BB, 2 RBI.

    Chris Dominguez, Louisville (G1): 1-2, 2B, BB.

    Steve Selsky, Louisville (G1): 1-3, 2B, RBI.

    Jon Moscot, Louisville (G1): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K.

    Nate Adcock, Louisville (G1): 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Sv (3).

    Wendell Soto, Dayton: 1-3, 2 BB, R.

Ty Washington, Dayton: 1-4, 3B, BB, 3 RBI.

Gavin LaValley, Dayton: 1-3, BB, R, RBI.

Jose Ortiz, Dayton: 1-3, BB, 2 RBI.

    Jake Paulson, Dayton: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Jeremy Kivel, Dayton: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Conor Krauss, Dayton: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Pedro Villarreal, Louisville (G2): 1 IP, zeroes.

    Juan Perez, Pensacola: 1-4, 3B, SB (6).

    Josh Smith, Pensacola: 7 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Also doubled.

    Kevin Shackelford, Pensacola: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day (2015)

    Wednesday, April 29th
Three players stand out today. Ty Washington and pitchers Tejay Antone and Dylan Axelrod. Going to name Ty with honorables to Tejay and Dylan.

Ty Washington 2B Dragons 3/5, 2 runs, 2 doubles & a triple, 2 RBI, every once in a while he looks really, really good.

    Hitters
    H Iribarren 2B Bats 1/3, walk

Steve Selsky LF Bats 1/4, Run

Y Rodriguez RF Bats 2/3, double, don't get excited yet - he's just at .200

Sean Buckley LF Wahoos 2/4, run, homer, 2 RBI now at .294

Kyle Waldrop 1B Wahoos 2/4, run, double

Juan Perez SS Wahoos 1/4, double, RBI

Beau Amaral CF Wahoos 1/4, double

Ronald Bueno 3B Dragons 1/4, Run, Homer, RBI, SH

Gavin LaValley 1B Dragons 1/4, walk, Run

G Boulware C Dragons 2/4, walk, Run, double, 2 RBI, now at .324, best hitter of the night except for Washington

    Brian O'Grady RF Dragons 1/2, 3 walks, 2 runs

Narciso Crook CF Dragons 1/5, double, 2 RBI

    Pitchers
    Tejay Antone SP Dragons 7 IP, 7 hits, 0 walks, 0 ER, 6 KO, ERA now 2.78 (W, 1-2)

    B Bernardino SP Dragons 1 IP, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 ER, 1 KO

Dylan Axelrod SP Bats 7 IP, 5 hits, 1 walks, 0 ER, 5 KO ERA now 2.10

Ben Klimesh RP Wahoos 1 IP, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 ER, 1 KO ERA now 1.35

The Bats lose 2-1 when the pen (de la Torre & Christiani) allows runs in the 8th and 9th after 7 shutout innings from Axelrod. Bullpen woes. Sadly, this is where the Reds will look to fix their pen, although Axelrod might be a possibility. (either in the pen or pushing Lorenzen to the pen). YRod led the hitters, well, of the 3 guys who got a hit. DeJesus falls below double Mendoza with an 0 for 4.

Wahoos had a close loss 5-3. In the ninth Marquez Smith pinch hit walked to leaoff, then Ryan Wright flew out to right and Smith got gunned at first for a DP. It was close, Smith didn't like the call and got tossed. Pat Kelly decided he'd had enough and got himself ejected, too. Buckley and Waldrop had 4 of Wahoos 6 hits. Peralta started and had a poor game - 5 innings, 6 hits/4 walks, 3 runs, McMyne and Gonzalez each gave up a run before Klimesh closed it out with a perfect ninth.

Dragons won easily 9-1 with a balanced attack, great night from Ty Washington, and strong pitching from TJ Antone and Brennan Bernadino. Chacin had a less stellar night closing the game and losing the shutout. Alejandro is looking rough so far.

    Daytona had the night off.

I'm impressed that Somsen is doing what he's doing in AA. And no matter what role he's in.
