    Thursday, July 9th, 2015:Minor-League Updates.

Louisville (43-44) - 7:05PM EDT - Robert Stephenson struggled early, but hung in there and finished with a superb outing. 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. Milb.com has a good read on Master Stephenson's outing. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp..._milb&sid=milb For the season, Stephenson now has topped the century mark with 101 strike outs, and batters are sub-Mendoza against him at .199. He celebrates the same birthday as my younger daughter as well. Louisville has a little momentum going, winning two straight. They will take on Indianapolis in the finale of a six-game, split-site series. They now lead it 3 games to 2. Dylan Axelrod (4.06) has pitching duties this evening. Since going 0-8 in his first two games, Brennan Boesch is scorching the league at .444. And I.L. pitchers want no part of him, walking him intentionally 3 times in his last two contests. Bucket Ruckus, the drumming duo, that entertained Dragons' fans last night will be in Louisville on Thursday. A nice tie-in promo is that the first 2,000 fans will receive bucket hats. And with Budweisers going for one dollar a pop, you can afford a bucket of beer.

Pensacola (31-50) - The Blue Fish are coming back home on a winning note, having beaten Mobile 4-1 on Wednesday night. Josh Smith (2.16) will be making his first start since being sent back down from Cincy. Marquez Smith is a bad man with a bat in his hands these days. Smith had the best series against Mobile, going 10-19 and hitting .526, including three multi-hit games, two triples, two runs and two RBIs. You have to look long and hard to find some positive Wahoos' team stats, but here we go: they are second in the league at getting hit by a pitch, and they have the second-highest fielding percentage. And, although they are just 6-7 in the second half of the season, they sit just one game out of first in their division. They are taking on the Montgomery Biscuits for the next five games, so this should be gravy. And speaking of biscuits and gravy, we hope your taste buds are ready for this savory homestand special! The Montgomery Biscuits are heading to town so Chef Travis Wilson has prepared a Southern Classic with a twist! This Golden Fried Chicken Breast is topped with crisp bacon and cheddar cheese smothered in black pepper white gravy in between a freshly baked biscuit.

Daytona (43-40) - 7:05PM EDT - Sal Romano (3.68) will help get the 'Tugas back to their winning ways as they try to take the rubber game of the series against Dunedin. The term "rubber game" is unclear in its origin. It has been in usage since, at least, 1599. And it seems to have derived, somehow, from the English, 16th-century sport of lawn bowling. Daytona is still leading the minor league universe in the Clash of the Caps contest, although the web page for that is semi-confusing. And there is still time to realize your first-pitch fantasy in the Perfect Pitch Instagram contest. All the details are here. http://www.milb.com/documents/4/4/4/...1_13y59rsb.pdf If you are in the Daytona area tour Jackie Robinson Stadium and museum. http://www.milb.com/content/page.jsp...450&vkey=team1 There is a display to various "Barrier Breakers", and one is dedicated to hockey player, Willie O'Ree. Who was Willie O'Ree, you ask? Only the first black hockey player. O'Ree was 95% blind in his right eye, but kept it a secret as it would have precluded him from playing in the league. He made his debut in 1958. Yesterday, we were introduced to Chief Pa-le-ne-a-pa-pe. He was also known as the 'Striker of the Ree' I don't think they were talking about Willie though.

Dayton (44-40) - 7:00PM - EDT - Dragons' players must be just about sick of Bowling Green by now. They have lost three games in a row to the Hot Rods (four consecutive overall). Tyler Mahle (2.87) will try to grab at least one game in the series, before Dayton starts lancing Lansing in a three-game set. Argenis Aldazoro has a beginner hit streak of six games. Jeremy Kivel is heating up along with the weather. Dragons' reliever Jeremy Kivel fired two perfect innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced. Over Kivel's last five appearances, he has allowed just one hit and no runs over seven innings. Kivel fired one pitch on Wednesday that was clocked at 97 mph on the scoreboard radar gun. They will honor the 2015 Community All Star at the game tonight. The honor goes to Shirley Dearing. We need more Shirley Dearings in the world. Read her story: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp...=.jsp&sid=t459

Billings (8-10) - 6:00PM EDT - The Mustangs neither won nor lost last night. They had just scored three runs in the top of the 7th to knot the game at 5, when rain suspended play. They will finish up today, before the regularly-scheduled contest. 'Juice' Lopez (6.30) will bring his mystery talents to the mound for the second game. He's just hoping he won't get 'squeezed' by the umpire. Yuk. Yuk. Tyler Stephenson has caught fire with the bat, pounding out 8 hits in his last 15 at-bats (.533). He is no longer a bust. In anticipation of needing extra arms for tonight, Rock Rucker was put on the AZL Reds' roster, and Sandy Lugo is up with Billings. Lugo has pitched well in the desert, with a 2.89 ERA and a 13/1 K/BB in 9.1 innings out of the bullpen.

AZL Reds (7-8) - 10:00PM EDT - The team fell 5-4 last night to drop them a game under .500. The boys held on to a 4-1 lead, until Zac Correll got whacked for 4 runs in one-third of an inning. Carlos Machorro with another sterling performance out of the pen, 1.2 hitless innings. The Desert Reds have dropped 3 of 4. It is no secret that the facility at Goodyear is shared by both the AZL Reds and the AZL Indians. What is a secret is that the members of the AZL Reds get the top bunks.

DSL Reds (20-14) - 10:30AM EDT - Three things seem so stay pretty constant for Los Reds: 1) The squad remains in first place, 2) Tomas de los Santos continues to be a man in motion (rumor has it he wears solar-powered spikes), smacking his 7th triple of the season and 3) Hernando 'The Vulture' Guzman will steal your win from you and not think twice about it. (He picked up win number 6 yesterday).

DSL Rojos (11-23) - 10:30AM EDT - Los Rojos had their hearts broken 2-1 yesterday. The pitching was solid, stellar in the case of Adolfi Telleria. But the hitting could not keep pace. Alejandro Paulino doubled twice, but was stranded both times.

Axelrod made it though 6 decent innings, but was clearly injured heading back to the dugout to end the 6th. Couldn't move his right knee, and had to be carried down the stairs...

Louisville is well on their way to going down in defeat. They trail 4-zip heading into the bottom of the 8th.

Axlerod went six and was charged with all four runs, three earned. Sounds as if he was injured somehow.
Joe Paterson came out of the pen to spin two scoreless innings so far.

The Bats are not making a bucket ruckus with their sticks tonight. Five base hits through eight now. Triple by Falu, double by Bryson Smith and three singles.

Pensacola has snuck a nose ahead Montgomery through five. They lead 3-0.

Josh Smith has given up three hits in 5.2 innings and counting. He has struck out 8.

Juan Duran has done most of the damage for the 'Hoos with a double and a triple.
Jesse Winker has singled and walked.

Re: Thursday, July 9th, 2015:Minor-League Updates.

Daytona struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and lead 5-1.

Sal Romano seems to be back in good form. He has yielded just one unearned run in the six innings. He has issued only one free pass and struck out four. That makes just two earned runs in his last 17.2 innings of work.

Carlton Daal is 3-3, two singles and a double.

Louisville did go quietly into that good night. 4-0.

Collin Ballester pitched a scoreless ninth.

    Louisville's offense continued to slumber.

I think this sums up the Dayton game. Boom! Goes the Dynamite! They lead 9-2 after seven.

Tyler Mahle hurled the first six, giving up a run on five hits. He fanned five and dropped his ERA to 2.78.

    Shedric Long - HR (1), BB, 2 RS, 2RBI.
Little Jimmy Pickens - SGL, HR (4), 2 RS, 3 RBI. And he threw a runner out at second.

Billings lost the suspended game 11-7.

All six pitchers that patted the resin bag allowed runs.

Aristides Aquino 3-5, 2 SGL, TPL, RS, RBI.
    Hector Vargas 2-5, 2SGL, SB (4), RS.

DSL Rojos dropped another nail-biter. This one was 4-3.

    Jose Castillo did a nice job out of the pen. 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Standout Stickmen:
    Edgar Herrera 3-4, 3 SGL, 2 RBI. (.322)
Mariel Bautista 2-4, SGL, TPL, RS.
Melbin Berroa 2-4, 2 SGL, RS, RBI.

Dayton tacked on two more in the 8th and won 11-2.

Brian Hunter pitched the final two innings, giving up just a walk and punching out one.

Pee Wee Pickens big adventure, including five ribeyes, puts him squarely in the middle of PoTD consideration.

Pensacola has it on cruise control, leading 3-0 in the bottom of the eight.

Josh Baseball has gone 8 innings so far. He has allowed just four base runners (3 hits and a walk). He has set 10 down on strikes. His game score is 85. Another clear PoTD nominee. Smith is over 100 pitches (104), so he may be through for the evening.

Re: Thursday, July 9th, 2015:Minor-League Updates.

Kyle McMyne came on in the ninth for Pensacola and gave up as many hits in one-third of an inning as Josh Smith allowed in 8 full. It is now 3-1 with two runners on and one out.
Patrick Schuster is replacing McMyne. Schuster walks the first batter he faces to load up the bases. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya! Zack Weiss is on.

And Zack Weiss picks up his 8th save. He gets force out as run number two steps on the dish. And then Kyle Skipworth guns down a runner trying to steal second.

Wahoos have won two straight to climb up to the .500 mark. They are tied for the division lead in the second half.

The AZL kiddos get a leadoff single from Jose Siri in the first and back-to-back long balls from James Vasquez and Raul Wallace. It's 3-0 behind Yo Adrian Rodriguez.
