    Kentucky Wildcats 2016-2017 Thread

Watching the Blue-White Game, De'Aron Fox is the real deal and Briscoe has made improvements in the offseason. Those two have been the story so far going against each other.

Bam Adebayo has been kinda AWOL, but he is going to be a beast on the inside. Perimeter scoring may be a problem with this years team, but there are opportunities for someone to step up.

To be fair to Adebayo, he played, like, three minutes in the first half due to an injury.

True. Didn't look like it was serious though.

Adebayo finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Fox had 33 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The surprise: Isaiah Briscoe with 39 points and 10 assists.

Not much to see in a glorified practice, but I thought the guards looked crazy talented. The rest of the team was decent. They remind me so much of the 2010 team.

And, like that squad, Kentucky will see virtually no man-to-man defense all season. There are questionable shooters at three positions and all three are quick/ strong enough to drive at will. All they'll see are defenses that pack it in, slow it down, and dare them to shoot over them. Willis can do just that. Monk is streaky enough that he will, I think, be able to hit about 35% of his threes. Beyond that?

    I dunno.

The 2010 team killed people on the glass and underneath. I suspect this team will do the same. Abebayo and Humphries will rebound, as will Killeya-Jones and Willis. (Gabriel may impact some games with his activity too.) Both Killeya-Jones and Willis can shoot, and Mulder or Hawkins might help this year as zone busters.

As always, they'll struggle early, but by tournament time, will be hard to beat. The shooting is key, IMO, and the speed with which they'll be allowed to play. Cal will let them go early (and Fox and Monk are otherworldly in getting down the court). That will slow to a crawl as other teams get more acclimated to sprinting back to avoid easy buckets. (It should also allow UK to dominate the defensive glass.)

I can definitely see 2010. Hopefully they play some teams this season that will test them with the zone. That was what killed the 2010 team against West Virginia and the same thing could happen again this season.

If they shoot 37% or better from three-point range over the course of the season, they'll be a Final Four team. (And I could see that. Monk might shoot 40%. Willis, Hawkins, and Mulder could all go 45%, while Briscoe and Fox could hit 35% of their limited deep balls.

If it's around 33% (the 2010's percentage), they'll need to be dominant in the half-court and on the defensive side of the ball to get there.

I feel like this is a recurring issue with Kentucky under Calipari. But I'm fine with that because of how successful he's been. No one's been better over the time he's been UK's coach. Only K is close, frankly.

It's not something that is really an issue IMO. Cal just works with what he is given. The 2010 team didn't have three point shooters but 2011 and 2012 did with Knight and Lamb. Last year we had Jamal Murray but even the last two teams weren't really perimeter oriented. It's just what's available in each class.

It just irritates me when Cal does something and it's critiqued nationally yet when Coach K does it he's a trailblazer. He's copied Cal in recent years (not that I blame him) yet it's not ok until K does it.

Kentucky beat Asbury in an exhibition game last night 156-63. They lead by 102 at one point in the game. If Cal hadn't played his walk ons the last 8 minutes they may have won by 120. I know it doesn't mean a thing other than no one had better try to run and gun with this team this year or it could get brutal.

Good thing it was an exhibition. If it were a regular season game they might have beat them by 150.

Was encouraged by how Humphries stepped up and had a real nice game with Bam being off for game one. We turn back around and have game two Sunday night, I'm ready for more hoops! Football, what football??

Kentucky is 0-7 from three so far, not looking good tonight against Canisius.

Perimeter shooting is going to make or break this team this season

We will see where we are tomorrow night against Mich State. It's still really hard to tell after two games against cupcakes. Three point shooting is just going to be work in progress all season. They just don't have enough consistent shooters from the three ball area. Also rebounding hasn't been good. Overall after two games they have been out rebounded by five. Not good against two small teams.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night to just see how far they need to go to be a Final Four contender.

I'm cautiously optimistic about tomorrow night.

Michigan State had 19 turnovers against Arizona. If they do that against Kentucky it will be a blowout, especially if Monk is out of his funk.
